The key to staying impactful in any commercial endeavour is the ability to pivot and move onto the next iteration of the business, and the wine business is certainly no different as wine and winemaking styles rise and wane and consumer interest is equally as cyclical. Artesa Vineyards and Winery, founded in 1991 in the then-unfashionable Carneros region just north of the San Pedro Bay by Spains Ravents family, owners of the Codorniu winery among others and makers of wine for seventeen generations, has stuck around into its third decade because the folks in charge recognized this early on, and the winery has accelerated its ability to make a wide range of great wines consumers love as its everyday practice, matching what its capable of making to what wine lovers are looking for. The sheer range of wines alone is inspiring and should place them on your must-visit list. Indeed, while Artesa was well known for its focus on vineyard location, under VP of Winemaking Mark Beringer these ideas have been taken to the next level since 2009, focusing on small-lot production; slower, more gentler winemaking which utilizes gravity flow and light control; and a series of limited-release and reserve bottlings which allow the winery to stretch its technical legs and try new things. Using grapes from the best vineyards in Carneros, Alexander Valley, Napa Valley and Atlas Peak doesnt hurt, either, and neither does the same philosophy of minimal impact via sustainable agriculture at those sites. The results have been quite impressive thus far. New winemaking programs have produced different tiers of wines, allowing for dozens of releases, something most wineries simply cannot do as most have neither the wherewithall nor the experience to handle the logistics, let alone the actual skill, necessary. Simultaneously, the attention to place, to showcasing where a wine is from, has become key; as Beringer states, We are putting Carneros back into our wines. We are bringing Carneros back to the place it needs to be. Equally, small-lot fermentations allow for complexity and subtlety to mix doing Pinot Noir, for example, in half-ton lots via upright barrels guarantees a range of expression in the resulting wines. These light touches produce more food-friendly wines which allow their vineyard sources to shine through, something clearly obvious when tasted at the winery. Artesas history is one which began with a vision of the Jewel of Carneros, and Barcelona architect Domongo Triay delivered on that vision with a pyramidal structure built into its surroundings, with vineyards on all sides, leading to the edifice. An expansive terrace provides full-circle views extending out to San Francisco on clear days. Water, fountains, soundscapes and more greet you on the outside, and light-filled, contemporary spaces adorned with modern artwork, sculptures, and installations by Artist-in-Residence Gordon Huether greet you on the inside, turning the wine tasting into an experience. Like a vision of todays Spain itself, the space and wines work well together to emphasize a mixture of modern and classic sensibilities, for which the winery has been justifiably celebrated many times over the years, and which provide

several different options for tasting, including the Single Vineyard and Members Only Rooms. The current and reserve flights provide opportunities to taste multiple Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Cabernets, Merlot, and the rarely seen Tempranillo. They are great wines, for sure, but its in the Limited Release and Single Vineyard flights where the winemaking playfulness really pays off; a staggering eighteen wine options await, ranging from Albarino to Tempranillo or Cabernet Sauvignon. If you want to taste what all of the North Coast is capable of producing, this is absolutely the place to plan your visit around. Unsurprisingly, the origins and the current resurgence of Artesa Vineyards and Winery lie in its name, which means handcrafted in Catalan, and with a new philosophy of winemaking at the helm, that is truly what is taking place. Do yourself a favor and come to Carneros to see for yourself whats begun to spring up once again. There are lots of upcoming events, too, including the end of Marchs Annual Carneros 5K/10K Run/Walk through the Vineyards, Aprils Spanish Dinner, and Mays Lobster Feed. The website is chock full of reasons, as if youd need any more!, to come to Carneros to see, taste, and experience what the Ravents family recognized before just about anyone else did. Check it out and then check out the winery itself youll be very glad you did. Cheers!

Growing Relations and Artisanal Winemaking Techniques Make the Difference

Established by four talented friends in 1988, Patz & Hall helped to pioneer single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in California. For Founder and Winemaker James Hall, success has been earned by building on and refining what he learned from his early mentors: using exceptional cool-climate fruit from trusted producers; processing with gentle, small-lot fermentations; aging in custom cooperage; and then bottling, largely unfiltered, to guarantee a uniqueness of place in each glass. James has combined this winemaking approach with his own boldness, imagination and trademark perfectionism which is why Patz & Hall wines are featured on the lists of top restaurants around the world. In terms of critical acclaim, the results speak for themselves. Vintage after vintage, Patz & Hall wines earn accolades as defining expressions of the grand cru-caliber vineyards they come from. This includes approximately a dozen sites, and famed vineyards like Hyde, Hudson, Pisoni and Zio Tony. James says the goal with each release is to create the benchmark wine for that vineyard the wine that becomes the reference for that combination of location and varietal for all future bottlings. Despite site-specific winemakings rigor, this is the desire that drives James, and for wine lovers it has yielded morethan-ample rewards. James Halls passion for wine began while traveling with his family through Europe in the late 1960s. Later, he met fellow wine enthusiast and future Patz & Hall founder Anne Moses at UC Santa Cruz, where James would often study winemaking textbooks, despite

Usually cutting edge and traditional Napa are never intertwined when describing a winery, but here at St. Supry Vineyards and Winery that is exactly what you will find. They are located on Highway 29 in Rutherford in the heart of Napa Valley. The winery is owned by the Skalli Family of France whose family has made wine for several generations. The winery offers guests a very unique wine tasting experience. While their main tasting room and gallery are being remodeled, guests have a rare opportunity to taste in the Atkinson House which is on the National Historic Register. The house dates back to the 1800s and has been restored and decorated with period furniture while offering an intimate setting to taste wine surrounded by amazing views of the vineyards. All current vintages, as well as library tasting flights, are offered daily. To further explore the rich history of St. Supry, schedule a Historical Tasting Tour which includes a vineyard walk and history of the winery followed by wine tasting in the Atkinson House. Their Rutherford estate vineyard surrounds the winery and is planted with the red Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Their other estate vineyard, Dollarhide Ranch, is nestled in a serene corner of Napa Valley with elevations ranging from 600 to 1,100 feet above sea level. This estate vineyard is the origin of most St. Supry wines and provides distinct characters derived from the Dollarhide terroir. Their main building that houses the two tasting rooms and fine art gallery is scheduled to re-open toward the end of April. This construction is much needed as they embark on a new era of wine education that will entice the senses. Here, visitors will be greeted and be able to schedule an exclusive wine tasting experience. Once opened, state-of-the-art technology will be presented in a traditional Napa setting. With catwalk views of wine production along with exciting tours, St. Supry has, in fact, carved out their niche as a cutting-edge winery producing premium Bordeaux style wines without sacrificing the charm of Napa. So, on your next trip to Napa Valley, visit St. Supry for one of their unique guided tours or library tastings.Their estate is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call ahead to schedule a tour at 1-800-231-9116 or email Events@stsupery.com.

Throughout the month of April, the second annual Napa Valley Arts in April celebrates The Napa Valley Collection: the famed wine regions other collection of priceless vintages significant 20th and 21st century artwork. Winery art collections include work by notable contemporary painters Francis Bacon and Jean Dubuffet, as well as sculptors George Rickey and Richard Serra. Napa Valley Arts in April 2012 celebrates the Napa Valley Collection by letting madabout-art winemakers collaborate with collection curators and favorite artists to turn the Napa Valley into a month-long art and wine crawl, made up of a variety of interactive art programs, curator-led tours, special exhibitions and inspired tastings. Many winery art activities are complimentary, and neighboring lodging establishments and spas welcome guests to complement Napa Valley Arts in April happenings with special offers from the best in wine, food and wellness. The Napa Valley Arts in April festivities progress geographically week by week; beginning with Calistoga (April 1-7), followed by St. Helena and Rutherford (April 9-15), Oakville and Yountville (April 1622), and finally Napa, Carneros and American Canyon (April 23-30). Calistoga, the Valleys northernmost region kicks off Napa Valley Arts in April on April 1. Throughout the Calistoga week, local wineries showcase impressive collections including the amazing sculpture,
painting, and decorative objects collection at Clos Pegase. From April 9-15, wineries around St. Helena and Rutherford take center stage, featuring an exclusive exhibition of photography at Markham Vineyards by photojournalist Baron Wolman, Rolling Stone magazines first chief photographer. This week only, original contact sheets belonging to Mr. Wolmans personal collection will be on view. From April 16-22, wineries in Oakville and Yountville showcase permanent and rotating exhibitions, such as Robert Mondavi Winerys permanent collection that holds work by Francis Bacon and a rotating exhibition space currently showing Napa Valley artist Nancy Willis monotypes and paintings. April 23-30, Napa, Carneros and American Canyons art-focused wineries include The Hess Collection, which is displaying a selection of Donald Hess personal modern and contemporary collection including artwork by artists Robert Motherwell and Magdalena Abakanowicz (see page 36). A full list and detailed map of participating wineries, as well as a variety of art viewing and wine tasting special offers, can be downloaded at the official Legendary Napa Valley website. Maps and information are also available at all participating wineries, the Napa Valley Welcome Center, all chambers of commerce offices and many other locations throughout the Napa Valley. HAGAFEN CELLARS
Premier Winery Promises Three Key Ingredients in Every Bottle of Wine: Passion, Soul and Enjoyment!
BY MonicA l. DAShWooD

The most inviting quality about Hagafen Cellars, besides their delicious varietal wines, is Ernie Weir, the winemaker and owner. Known as Don Ernesto Hagafen to his vineyard crew, he works in close connection with his staff, producing some of the finest wines in Napa Valley. Ernie recognizes the moniker, Don Ernesto Hagafen, as a sign of affection, respect and admiration earned over the years. Ernie is just like his award-winning wines, friendly, approachable, sophisticated and easy going. The tasting room and winery grounds, where you can sit and sample exceptional wines, carry the same warm and welcoming feel with its outdoor scents of rosemary and citrus, soft sounding wind chimes, Italian landscaped gardens and mosaic patio tables designed by his wife, Irit Weir. Ernie and Irit Weir started Hagafen Cellars in 1979, with their first
28
commercially released vintage in 1980. Over the years, Ernie has perfected the craft of winemaking and loves to play an active role in every aspect of the business, from grape growing to winemaking to marketing. I like the challenge, working with all these different grapes to see which wines I will make each year. I find it fun, exciting and interesting. Hagafen Cellars vintages are put together based on wines Ernie personally enjoys, as well as feedback from his customers. He listens closely, hearing what they have to say on any given day in the tasting room. Hagafen Cellars has many fine wines in which to choose. They produce 8-10 varietals each year and offer 20 distinct vintages on their tasting menu, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, White Riesling and Zinfandel. They also produce three highly acclaimed Brut Cuve sparkling wines as well as late harvest dessert releases. Their small lot releases start with superb fruit, where they seek to shape each vintage to showcase its uniqueness from the region in which it originates. For this reason, their production is only 8,000 cases, coming from their own 20-acre estate and from other select growers from the Napa Valley and Lake County regions. You know their wines are exceptional if the White House has been serving Hagafen Cellar wines, on and off, to foreign dignitaries since the 1980s. Put simply, their award-winning wines are best in class, winning gold medals throughout the decades, including their 2010 Chardonnay, Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley; the 2009 Merlot, Napa Valley Estate Bottled; as well as the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley Estate Bottled; 2007 Cabernet Franc, Napa Valley Estate Bottled and many more. Hagafen Cellars is excited to announce their newly released 2011 Sauvignon Blanc which comes from the Moskowite Ranch on the eastern foothills of Napa Valley. This older Sauvignon Blanc vineyard has been the source for their Sauvignon Blanc wines for over a decade and is a hillside planting with well-exposed fruit, allowing beautiful aromatic fruitiness to surface naturally. The nose of Oro Blanco grapefruit, which is also grown here on their property at the winery, stands out with its strong pungent flavors. Its the amazing balance of fruitiness and tart acid that makes this wine one you will not want to put down. Tours are offered daily at 11 a.m., by appointment only, except Saturdays and holidays. Tastings of seasonal wine library releases of past vintages are also available by appointment. Hagafen Cellars offers their award-winning wines at their tasting room, on-line, in select stores and restaurants, but also through their three distinct exclusive wine clubs: Prix, Hagafen and R.S. (residual sugar). Take a beautiful drive along the Silverado Trail and stop by Hagafen Cellars. Everyone working there wants you to come and taste the passion, soul and enjoyment in every sip of Hagafen wine.

When people join the Vezr Family Vineyard wine club, they tend to not let their membership go. In fact, Vezr has one of the highest club retentions of all time. There are many reasons to join other than the award-winning wine shipments and the benefits that give you VIP status and recognition. Theres ambiance that you cannot get anywhere else, free tastings for up to four people, a private tasting room and club room onsite, ATV tours, free wine club pick-up parties with live music, exceptional food and wine served right from the barrels. Winter pick-up parties are usually barrel burning events, roasting linguica, Hungarian paprika bacon and sausages from all over the world, accompanied by hearty Zins, some seductive Cabernets, Petite Sirah and Barrel Room Select Blends. And try roasting smores over the open fire while tasting some of the finest white and ruby Ports. At the spring and summer pick-up parties there are outdoor movies, barbecues and live music in the gardens, either at the Private Ranch or the quaint Western Village of Mankas Corner. Throughout the year, there are special concerts and formal dinners. The wine club, due to the limited production and intimate settings, is anticipated to be capped at 1,000 members. The club consists of 250 spots for Chieftains VIP Chairmens, and 750 Elite members and these two quotas are quickly filling up. Stop by and visit the Vezrs and join either club at the tasting room or join online at www.vezerfamilyvineyard.com.

the fact that they werent part of his curriculum. This fascination led to a transfer to the North American mecca for winemakers, UC Davis. After receiving his degree, Jamess first job in 1981 was working under renowned winemakers Leo McCloskey and Patrick Mahaney at Felton-Empire. There, he learned to combine winemakings two sides: Leo was a scientist, obsessed with unraveling the mysteries of wine. Pat was the craftsman, meticulously working with the raw materials. As youll see when you try them, one can still clearly taste the influence of these mentors in each Patz & Hall wine. 1983 brought James to Flora Springs as Assistant Winemaker, where he spent four years honing his craft and learning the intricacies of barrel-fermenting small-lot Chardonnays. By 1988, he had become Winemaker and Estate Manager for Honig Winery, and thats when he, Anne Moses, Heather Patz and Donald Patz, the latter having been Sales Manager at Flora Springs, produced a debut Napa Valley Chardonnay under the Patz & Hall label. In the years since, the winery has developed a passionate following devoted to its single-vineyard releases sourced from storied sites in the Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, Mendocino County, Napa Valley and Santa Lucia Highlands. One of the keys to the winerys success has been the relationships James, Donald, Heather and Anne have created and nurtured with growers like Larry Hyde, Charlie and Bud Chenoweth, Gary Pisoni, and Lee Martinelli. Another has been the judicious use of cuttingedge equipment and processes to enhance quality without losing the spirit of hands-on small-lot winemaking. The winery is state-ofthe-art where it needs to be, while preserving the
Caymus St.
traditional where appropriate, like Patz & Halls custom-made French cooperage, which requires a special three-year supply of aged staves be kept constantly available. That same eye to detail led Patz & Hall to establish a purpose-built, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir winery to guarantee the vineyard will be in each glass. Clearly, Patz & Halls success is the result of lots of hard work and attention to detail, and just as clearly, its also based on knowing when to let the wine do its thing without interferencein other words, the vineyard cannot speak in the glass if the winemaker gets in its way. Knowing what not to do looks like instinct, but its based on a scientific understanding of the wines lifecycle. As James Hall has shown for a quarter-century, you need both creativity and understanding to create artistry in the glass. Cheers to his continued success!

Napa Valleys 3rd Annual Wine Auction on the Lawn Moves to Bigger Venue
The Third Annual Wine Auction on the Lawn will be held Sunday, May 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Charles Krug/ Peter Mondavi Family Winery in St. Helena. A live auction is being added to the silent auction of sought-after wines. Baba Ken Okulolo of The Nigerian Brothers and Nigerias top bassist will be the featured musical guest. The Napa casual fundraising event that started on the lawn of Chris and Christina Madrigal, proprietors of Madrigal Estate Winery, north of St. Helena, has outgrown its original venue. Peter and Katie Mondavi, proprietors of Charles Krug/Peter Mondavi Family and co-founders of the event, are opening the much bigger lawn of their historic St. Helena winery to the public in support of the Foundation for African Medicine & Education (FAME). In early 2012, Katie Mondavi, who served on the clinical faculty of Stanford and as an assistant clinical professor of medicine at UCSF will be returning to , Tanzania to work in FAMEs bush clinics and at its newly opened hospital. Peter and Katie Mondavi, proprietors of Charles Krug/Peter Mondavi Family; Chris and Christina Madrigal, proprietors of Madrigal Estate Winery; and Rudy and Rita von Strasser, proprietors of von Strasser Winery, began hosting the Wine Auction on the Lawn in 2010. They established FAME Napa Valley, a registered non-profit, in support of FAME, which provides consistent, quality medical services in Tanzania to one of the poorest and most medicallyunderserved areas of the world. Last years auction provided funding for 75% of the meds distributed by FAME. Charles Krug/Peter Mondavi Family Winery is located at 2800 Main Street/Highway 29 in St. Helena and is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (707) 967-2229 or visit the website at www.charleskrug.com

Yountville Welcomes Newly Repositioned North Block Hotel
Sophisticated boutique hotel presents fresh contemporary design and Chef Richard Reddingtons Redd Wood
Following recent updates, the former Hotel Luca now boasts a refreshed look and a new name, North Block Hotel. The modern boutique property is located in Napa Valleys idyllic town of Yountville. Named for its location on the northernmost end of the vibrant town, North Block Hotel is a mix of old world charm and modernity. With fresh, contemporary design updates from highly regarded St. Helenabased designer Erin Martin, and recently introduced Redd Wood, the latest restaurant from acclaimed chef Richard Reddington of Michelinstarred Redd, North Block Hotel offers a new and unpretentious wine country escape. To celebrate the rebranding, North Block Hotel introduces the North Block VIP Wine Package. Valid nightly through June 30, 2012, the package includes a room category upgrade (based on availability), a welcome bottle of wine and a complimentary VIP wine tasting for two at Girard Winery. Nightly rates start at $315 Sunday through Thursday, and $380 on Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit www.northblockhotel.com. Located at the epicenter of Yountville, North Block Hotel is a lively and welcoming destination for socializing, indulging in great food and wine at Redd Wood, or simply relaxing in wine countrys beauty, remarked Ty Accornero, general manager. Unlike any other property in the area, North Blocks intimate size and graceful design create an ambiance of conviviality. With her very first hotel project to date, North Blocks lobby has been re-envisioned by designer Erin Martin of Erin Martin Design, known for her signature contemporary, industrial-chic style. The whimsical reception desk, suspended from above, appears to float against the backdrop of dark charcoal walls, evoking images of an antique European ticket booth. Well-worn, painted scaffold boards on the ceiling provide a broken-in feel, while large, cushy ottomans paired with a Michael Taylor-designed coffee table beckon guests to the flickering fireplace. Burnished brass skeleton keys make a captivating wall display; guests also are encouraged to take one home as a keepsake from a lavish heap at departure. The overall effect is simultaneously modern, sexy and welcoming. Perfect for a couples getaway or property buy-outs for weddings or special events, North Blocks sociable, interactive atmosphere is heightened by the open flow from the arched stone entrance through the wide interior courtyard. The outdoor fireplace and comfortable lounge furniture invites mingling over cocktails while watching the action at Redd Wood. Stone walkways with fragrant lemon trees and flickering lanterns lead to the 20 spacious guestrooms. Flooded with natural light,
Welcome to
the spacious and sophisticated guestrooms feature luxurious details including custom linens, flat screen televisions, iPod entertainment docking stations, espresso machines, deep soaking tubs and glass rainshowers, and private patio or balcony. Many also feature gas fireplaces, plantation shutters, French doors and double-sinks. Guests are encouraged to take full advantage of the wine country sunshine with chic cabana seating around the large heated outdoor swimming pool. With its high staff-to-guest ratio, North Block Hotel promises personalized guest service, with added services and amenities including complimentary wi-fi, valet parking, and a seasonally inspired continental breakfast daily. Debuting in spring 2012, North Block Spa by Francis & Alexander invites guests and locals alike for an unrivaled spa experience. Guests of the intimate spa may enjoy unique, of-the-moment treatments such as Un-corked, a cutting edge reflexology treatment that cleverly incorporates wine corks, or rekindle their romance with The North Block Playful Passion, a self-guided scrub and massage for two. North Block Hotel is located at 6757 Washington Street in Yountville, California. For more information, visit the website at www.northblockhotel.com or contact the hotel directly at (707) 944-8080.

Family owned and operated MazzoccoSonoma, in the countys fabled Dry Creek region, is famous for its Zinfandels and for its friendly and easy-going atmosphere. Owned by the legendary winemaker/grower couple, Ken and Diane Wilson, it sits on a saddle between two coveted parcels of wine country real estate: Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley. The comfortable tasting room is housed in a contemporary wood structure with a wellbalanced traditional look that fits into the location and locale. Inside the vaulted-celing tasting room, the colors are soft and there are large windows offering panoramic views of the property. Mazzocco is all about enjoying wine and living the good life. With our expansive patio and picnic area outside, and our cozy lounge area inside, you get the chance to experience all that the wine country has to offer, said winery sales manager and wine club coordinator, Karen Clarke. You can also enjoy our patio or just come and picnic with a few friends while discovering our amazing wines and rolling vineyards. Mazzocco Wine Club Members (and club
members from other Wilson Artisan Wineries) have the three-bedroom Mazzocco Guest Cottage exclusively for their use. Located on the property just a minute from the winery and tasting room, it is surrounded by 17 acres of estate vineyards. In the tasting room you will be able to try based on availability a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and, of course, Zinfandel. Winemaker Antoine Favero is often around the tasting room, so you can get some personal insight from the man who crafts the wines. He is a strong believer in the philosophy and practice that wines are nurtured, rather than produced. As a result, his wines express the unique varietal and terroir characteristics of each vineyard he sources fruit from. Each is a unique wine, and is bottled as memorable tribute to the grape, to the vineyards, and to the winemaker himself. If you would like the winery to supply a quite delicious box lunch from Costeaux Bakery in Healdsburg for a group of six or more, they need to be requested 48 hours in advance. For tasting groups of eight (or more), please call at least two days before your visit.

collage retrospective by Douglas DeVivo at the charles creek tasting room & Gallery
Fun and colorful are words often used to describe the unique works of local artist Douglas DeVivo whose retrospective of 15 years as a collage artist is currently on display at the Charles Creek Tasting Room & Gallery. I paint with paper, says the artist, creating depth and shadow from bits of written text, old illustrated technology and slivers of our personal history. My process is quick and instinctual; there is something meditative about cutting and laying paper. Time just flies away Beyond the surface appeal that encourages comfortable
engagement with each piece, the viewer will find layer upon layer of depth, complexity and ever-changing perspectives. The early work, DeVivo observes, is so different; I was into furniture making at the time so most are boxed (three dimensional). Over the years the work has become more open, more emotional and visually complex. These collages hit you on so many different levels. Each one has a rich visual history; they bring back memories. You can look forever and never see it all! Douglas DeVivo lives and works in Jenner, California. This show will run through March 31, 2012. The winery Tasting Room is conveniently situated in a charming 1890s era storefront on the historic Sonoma Plaza at 483 First St. West. The Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call (707) 935-3848 or email alan@charlescreek.com.

Wine Tasting in
More than 30 Livermore Valley wineries will participate in the regions third annual Barrel Tasting Weekend March 31 and April 1 by offering samples of wines still in development direct from their barrels. Guests with special event wristbands and official glasses will receive at least one barrel sample at each participating winery. Most winemakers will be present to personally pour and discuss their young wines and offer delicious pairings with gourmet appetizers, artisan cheeses, chocolate and nuts. Barrel tasting provides wine enthusiasts of all experience levels with a fun snapshot of how wine evolves from grape to glass. Guests will have the opportunity to pre-purchase some of the barrel wines at a discount, before they are bottled and released to the public, a practice known as buying futures. More than a dozen different varietals, including the rare Primitivo and Alicante Bouschet and ever-
