Management of natural resources, especially land resources, is the key to attain food, water and environmental security. This has special relevance since per capita availability of agricultural land in India is decreasing rapidly due to population growth, industrialization and urbanization.
Amongst the various options available for improving land productivity, development of wastelands is one of the most viable options. This calls for preparing comprehensive spatial database on wastelands, their types and spatial distribution that helps in greening, reclamation so that more land is available for productive use.
Remote Sensing data has an important role to play in wasteland inventory, planning and monitoring. The information obtained from satellite platform is timely, reliable, accurate and cost-effective. Also, due to its availability on a repetitive mode, it is useful for monitoring the status periodically.
