the historic

different names too:
The Lincoln

Noble County as Indianas
newest Scenic Byway. Along
it is the historic Jewish
Community of Ligonier with
its beautiful historic architec-
ture, 30 plus profession-

melting pot of culture.
The former synagogue
there is one of only 38
such structures listed on
the National Register of

Ligonier is also home to
ANNI E OAKLEY
PERFUM ERY, the nations only
perfumery in the United
States, and to Fashion Farm
that hosts the states largest
celebration of pumpkins all
October long with Pumpkin
Fantasyland.
Just down the road from
Ligonier explore the way life
used to be at the historic
Stones Trace Tavern Museum
dating from 1839. Near here
you can also explore the only
surviving brick section of the
Lincoln Highway in Indiana.
THE CHARM I NG KI M M ELL
HOUSE I NN: Welcomes hungry
Lincoln Highway explorers
and specializes in unique and
homemade food offerings to
cure your appetite before
moving on to Wolf Lake.
Here you can explore the
historic Luckey Hospital
Museum and get a fascinating
look at medical care from the
1920s. If you want to get in
touch with nature then just
turn west from the Luckey
Hospital on State Road 109 to

continental highway in the nation. Along the
way in Noble County this historic road passes
by the quaint streets of Kendallville dotted
with historic homes and touches historic Main
Street that is the scene of classic car shows, art
festivals, and the legendary Apple Festival. On
the edge of town wander one of the nations
only historic windmill museums and spend
reflective time on the shores of Bixler Lake.
From Kendallville Lima Road (Route 3)
connects many of our family owned Farm to
Fork locations such as Orchard Hill, Maple
Acres, Country Heritage Vineyard, and Cooks
Bison Ranch. End your journey on the Lima
Road by stopping for a bite at northern
Indianas oldest restaurant the St. James in
Avilla, or at the Magpies Pizza where they
grow their own tomatoes for their sauce. Be
sure to ask owner Larry about his great
grandfather who survived the Titanic.
Noble County is blessed with over 100
natural lakes, and Route 9 links our two crown
jewels of waterways: Sylvan Lake and Chain
O Lakes State Park. Sylvan Lake is one of
Indianas largest manmade lakes that was
carved out of the wilderness to feed the
proposed canal system for the area in the
1830s. Today Sylvan Lake is home to the
breath taking setting of the home and gardens
of famed author and naturalist Gene Stratton-
Porter. This state historic site contains the
authors unique home dating from 1914,
gardens, gift shop, and final resting place of
Mrs. Porter and her daughter. Lavender Lane
lavender farm and Carolines Quilt Shop offer
unique shopping experiences. More Farm to
Fork locations such as Mirror Lake, DeCamps
Gardens, and Fox Trail Farms will greet you as
you make your way south to Albion. Chain
OLakes State Park welcomes over 260,000
visitors a year to its fantastic lakes, trails,
cabins and campgrounds. While in Albion visit
Black Pine Animal Sanctuary that provides a
home and care for rare and exotic animals for
the rest of their lives. And if you have your
own horse, then York Hills is the place for you.
This exceptional facility provides a variety of
trails and amenities for the experienced rider.
Roll the Dice
I NDI ANAS LARGEST M ONOPOLY GAM E:
The historic courthouse of Noble County
sees thousands of visitors every year
conducting business in its halls, but for one
day a year the courthouse square is
transformed to Indianas largest game board. It
is a sight to behold as teams from across
northeast Indiana make their own life size
game pieces, roll oversized dice, and take
instruction from an incredible look alike of
Uncle Moneybags himself. And, yes there is
even a jail, but in Albion-opolys case it is
the Noble County Historical Society Museum
located in the historic old jail just to the west
of the courthouse square.

Noble County has to be one of the
"greenest" places in the Hoosier state. We are
teeming with natural and recreational resources
in the age of physical fitness and eco-
awareness. Along with our scores of natural
lakes, rivers, and nature preserves, we are home
to one of a kind unique locations to visit,
explore, and learn about the world around us.
From Indiana's only Chimpanzee at Black Pine
Animal Sanctuary to hundreds of acres of
nature preserves. Merry Lea Environmental
Learning Center, championship golf courses,
and the peace and quiet that is Chain O' Lakes
State Park await you.
These natural features all make us proud to
be home of Indiana's Green Triangle. Whether
it's casting your line for excellent fishing,
paddling a canoe on our tranquil waters, or
getting your hands a little dirty you will
reconnect to nature and yourself in Noble
County. For more information on itineraries
and suggestions of things to do, and what to see
in the Triangle contact the Noble County
Visitors Bureau at 1-877-202-5761 or online at

BLACK PI NE ANI M AL SANCTUARY in Albion
currently houses more than 85 exotic
displaced/abused "pets" and retired circus
performers. Visitors will see Bengal tigers,
leopards, the only chimpanzee in Indiana, birds,
reptiles, and more representing over 50 species.
Many of the animal residents that have found
refuge at Black Pine are endangered. The
opportunity for people to learn how animals
like these may be easily obtained, often
illegally, is alone an educational experience that
pulls at the heart strings and raises awareness
for needed change.

lakes. Many of these are accessible to the

Historic cemeteries were
truly there for public parks in
America. They were often
designed to welcome visitors'
to explore their grounds
surrounded by peace, quiet,
and nature. Graveyards are
full of beautiful examples
of the art and craftsmanship
found in the many unusual and
varied monument styles and
materials used to create them.
Along the trail you will learn of
people who will make you laugh,
cry, and walk away with a
newfound respect for their lives
and contributions not only to
Indiana, but to the world.
This is a road trip like no other
featuring over eight historic
cemeteries across several northern
Indiana counties and communities.
More than 100 new and facinating
stories spanning the centuries and
miles will be found along the Grand
Army of the Republic Highway (U.S.
6).
For some a graveyard may seem
like the end of the road, but in
northeastern Indiana it is just the
beginning of a months-long celebration
of the lives of those who have gone
before us.
Guided, group, and self-guided
tours through these silent cities of
stone are available. For more informa-
tion contact the Noble County Visitors
Bureau at 1-877-202-5761, or vist our
website at www.tombstonetrail.com.

Eight connecting glacier-carved kettle
lakes, forming a chain of lakes, along with
spectacular wooded scenery make Noble
County's Chain O Lakes State Park a haven
for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. The park
is only about a mile wide and just four miles
long but encompasses 2,718 acres, including
212 surface acres of water. More than 7
miles of widely varying shoreline is one of
the unique features of this beautiful park.
There are a total of 11 lakes within the park.
This area, once inhabited by Miami Indians
and more recently by settlements of pioneers,
is now available to all of us to enjoy!
With on-site boat rental, old salts and
want-to-be-mariners can paddle connecting
lakes and explore peaceful back waters. The
park is a small-boater's fishing paradise with
launch ramps and offers a fishing pier as
well. More than 10 miles of easy and
moderate hiking trails meander throughout
the park. The 1915 restored schoolhouse
nature center offers seasonal interpretive
services and programs. Camping options
range from primitive tent camping to
electricity for RV's. Tree-sheltered family
cabins overlooking the lakes are a great
option for park lovers who prefer a bunk and
a woodstove. Bird-watchers will find Chain
O Lakes to be one of the best locations in
the county, as will nature photographers.
Whatever it is that draws you to Chain O
Lakes, we're sure that you'll want to return
again and again... and we welcome you!
