Chapter 8 Project: Moldy Oldies

You take a piece of bread from the bread bag and nd that there is green mold on it. You open the refrigerator to look for a snack only to see that the cheese is covered with a fuzzy white mold. So just how fast does mold grow? As you work through the activities, you will grow your own mold. You will gather data, create graphs, and make predictions. As part of your research, you will plan and complete an experiment to monitor mold growth. Materials 4 square/in. graph paper 1 paper plate (per group) Plastic wrap

Packet of unavored gelatin A small piece of unprocessed cheese

Background Information: Research mold growth and find out what conditions are best for growing mold. You will include a brief write-up of this research so be sure to write all of this in your own words and to cite where you gathered your information. Question and Hypothesis: Write the question you are researching as well as a prediction of the length of time required for mold to start growing and how long it will take for it to cover the plate. Record your research, question, and your hypothesis. Procedure: In preparing your project, cut the graph paper to cover the bottom of the dish. Cover the entire paper with about 1/8 in. of gelatin. Add the cheese to the gelatin. Leave the dish uncovered overnight. Then, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Record your procedure for your final project. Investigation Design Diagram and Observations: You will make observations twice a week for 2 weeks. You will record the mold growth percentage in your IDD. Dont worry if you dont see any mold for the first few days. Starting with the first day you see at least one square of the graph paper covered by mold, find the percent of growth from each day to the next. Record any observations made, along with the percentages of growth during each day recording data. You must also note the location in the classroom that your experiment is kept. Graphing: Make a scatterplot of the growth data showing number of hours (x axis) vs. number of squares covered with mold (y axis). Data Analysis and Conclusion: After you have gathered your data, write an analysis of what was observed. Analyze your scatterplot for any patterns or trends you see in the way mold grew throughout your experiment. Your conclusion will be written once we have looked at the data together in class. Any factors that may have affected growth should be included.
