Multivariable Calculus (MATH-AD 112) - Spring 2012 Mid Term Practice Exam

Student Name: Teacher Name: Dr. Soane Bouarroudj Instructions: No documents are allowed during the exam No calculators are allowed The exam contains 3 pages. Time: 1 h 10 min Problem 1. [5 Marks] Compute the following limit, if it exists

ID: Section:

ey ex x2 + y 2 (x,y)(0,0) lim

Problem 2. [10 Marks] Find the equation of the plane that passes through the points P (1, 1, 2), Q(2, 1, 1) and R(1, 1, 1). Problem 3. [20 Marks] Consider the Helix C given by the vector-valued funtion r(t) = cos(t) i + sin(t) j + t k. (a) Reparametrize the Helix with respect to arc lenght measued from the point where t = 0 in the direction of increasing t. (b) Find the curvature k(s) of the Helix C. (c) Find the equation of the osculating plane at s = 0. (d) We dene the torsion of a curve C, denoted by (s), to be a function that satises dB = N, ds where N is the unit normal tangent, and B is the binormal vector. Compute (s) for the Helix. Problem 4. [10 Marks] Find and sketch the domain of the function f (x, y) = y x ln(y + x).

Multivariable Calculus/ Spring 2012 Problem 5. [25 Marks] Consider the function f dened by xy (x2 y 2 ) f (x, y) = x2 + y 2 0

if if

(x, y) = (0, 0) (x, y) = (0, 0)

(a) Compute Dx f and Dy f , then show that they are continous functions. (Hint: To compute Dx f at a point (x, y) = (0, 0) use usual integration techniques; to compute Dx f at (0, 0) use the denition involving the limit.) (b) Compute Dxy f and Dyx f and show that they are not continous at (0, 0). (c) Compute Dxy f (0, 0) and Dyx f (0, 0). Explain why Clairauts theorem is not satised. Problem 6. [10 Marks] Show that the lines with symmetric equations x = y = z and x + 1 = y/2 = z/3 are skew, and nd the distance between these lines. [Hint: you may rst show that these two lines lie in parallel planes.] Problem 7. [10 Marks] The Helix r1 (t) = cos t i + sin t j + t k intersects the curve r2 (t) = (1 + t) i + t2 j + t3 k at the point (1, 0, 0). Find the angle of intersection of these curves. Problem 7. [5 Marks] Consider a function f such that its level curves are given in the gure bellow. Estimate fx (1, 1.21) and fy (1, 1.21) [NO NEED TO SIMPLIFY YOUR ANSWER]

Multivariable Calculus/ Spring 2012 (ii) The curvature of a curve at a given point measures how quick the curve changes direction at that point. True True False False (iii) In a three-dimensional space, two lines perpendicular to a third line are parallel.
