ow great it would be if all we wanted in life would come to us if we only had to wish for it. In the real world, it doesnt happen. We must remain diligent in our faith and believe in the Almighty that rewards those who work for what they need. In this terrible economic climate, we are still working on our plans for a new building for our Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (ANRC). What an exciting time of growth for us, and we need to have the facilities to accommodate that growth. The need is great, and we will continue our quest. We must keep moving forward for those needing our care. Progress is being made each month. We are at the stage now where we are asking for bids for the architectural design of the building. We had mentioned in the past issue that the Planning Board of the Town of Emerson had given us a preliminary approval. The next step is to have final plans to present to the State of New Jersey Health Department. We will shortly be announcing the start of a Capital Building Campaign to raise at least fifty percent of needed funds. There are currently several banks who are willing to lend us the balance of the required amount. Going forward for our Lord, for our community, for you! We ask you for your support when the campaign begins and invite all our members to come to our Annual Meeting on May 21, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the ANRC where sandwiches and refreshments will be served. We at the ANRC wish all a very Happy Easter.

away from possibly entering a long term care facility there has never been a better time to buy a LTC insurance policy due to the incentives. In the coming weeks details of a national long term care financing reform plan may be in place. States have already started the ball rolling by initiating a Long Term Care Partnership Program. This program is designed to protect assets equal to the insurance benefits received from a Partnership Policy so that personal assets will not be taken into account when determining eligibility for Medicaid. If your policy pays $250,000 in LTC benefits, your savings will not be depleted by $250,000 and your loved ones will be able to hold Matthew L. The Wanderer
Shakeh Bautista, DON

he Dementia Care Practice recommendations for the residents who wander are the result of extensive research, literature, reviews and consultations with nationally recognized care experts. The practice recommendations focus on multiple care areas; one of them is DEMENTIA and WANDERING. Wandering is a term used to describe a person who moves around aimlessly. Many people think that wandering should be stopped but in fact, it is often purposeful and has a significant meaning to that individual. Wandering can be beneficial when it provides stimulation, contact with others, physical

mobility and prevention of pressure sores. In actuality wandering is a response to physical and psychological needs such as boredom, isolation, hunger, pain, excessive or lack of stimulation and anxiety. However, wandering also can be detrimental when a resident attempts to elope, enter unsafe areas or unable to eat or drink due to excessive motion causing fatigue, weight loss, dehydration and death. With these factors in mind, it is necessary for the interdisciplinary team to work closely with the family members, to assess the needs of each wanderer. Based on his or her assessment, the team will develop a care plan with interventions and goals that promotes the physical and psychological well being of the resident in a safe and home like environment. q

as well. The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 allows all states the option to enact partnership policies and your state may or may not be involved in a program. Policies in these new programs must meet specific criteria, including federal tax qualification, consumer protections, and inflation protection requirements. New Jersey along with other states has established the program to provide incentives for individuals to insure against the costs of providing for their long term care needs. More importantly it provides a mechanism for individuals to qualify for coverage of the cost of meeting their long-term care needs under Medicaid without first being required to substantially exhaust their resources. I can tell you from experience that while working at the ANRC, not one LTC insurance carrier has denied a claim. Thats something to ponder when thinking about your next investment move. At the ANRC we accept all LTC insurance carriers and have begun aligning ourselves with networks to help consumers make informed decisions about their long term care needs. If you

need assistance with finding a reputable agent who can steer you through the maze of options and objectives, do not hesitate to call my office and we will help point you in the right direction. If this market has left a bitter taste in your mouth over the last few months you should certainly consider LTC insurance. We all have taken risks by investing in mutual funds, 401Ks, stocks and bonds. LTC insurance is a risk that may pay huge dividends for you and your familys fiscal health when you can no longer afford to and its price may be right for these times. q

his past January the Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center partnered with Jersey Cares to expand our Volunteer Program. Jersey Cares is a non-profit community based organization established in 1993. They provide individuals, families, corporate and community groups with a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. Jersey Cares partners with hundreds of non-profit agencies throughout New Jersey. It is our hope that together we can provide more meaningful activities along with our association with Jersey Cares. We look forward to working with them throughout the coming year and we thank the many volunteers to budget their time with us for our residents benefit! Spring is here and soon enough we will once again be venturing outdoors. Some of the locales we plan on visiting this year will be the local malls and ethnic restaurants. Naturally, many of our residents will take part in the Bergen County Senior Picnic in September. Our residents always enjoy getting out, breathing the fresh air and enjoying the sights, smells, and scents of spring and summer! Please take a minute to review our Upcoming Events calendar. Many times and events are to be determined so please call prior to an event to find out the specifics. Many events and entertainment take place weekly and our schedule may be subject to change. Calling ahead of time will give you the opportunity to plan your next visit to the ANRC a pleasant one!q

In the Kitchen with Chef Alan Fass

ith all the news in the media about food born illness lately [peanut butter, chop meat], I thought I would write about how to prevent illness in your home. In the coming months, I will write about proper temperature control, keeping it clean, storage, and symptoms. Of course you cant be in the processing plant, but your kitchen is a processing plant, and by following these guide lines, you can keep your family safe, just as we follow these rules in the ANRC kitchen to keep your loved ones safe Despite the fact that Americas food supply is among the safest in the world, 76 million cases of food-borne diarrheal disease occur in the United States every year. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given high priority to combating microbial contamination of the food supply, but consumers also have a part to play, especially when it comes to following safe food handling practices in the home. Prime causes of food-borne illness include bacteria, parasites and viruses such as E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, Shigella, Giardia, Cyclospora, Cryptosporidium and hepatitis A virus. These organisms can be found in a wide range of foods and drinks, including meat, milk and other dairy products, spices, chocolate, seafood and even water. Poultry is the food most often contaminated with disease-causing organisms. (Its been estimated that 60% or more of raw poultry sold at retail outlets probably carries some disease-causing bacteria.) Unpasteurized fruit and vegetable juices; foods made with raw or undercooked eggs; chicken, tuna, potato and macaroni salads; and cream-filled pastries harboring these pathogens have also been implicated in food-borne illnesses, as has fresh produce. Bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Salmonella have been found in raw seafood; and oysters, clams, mussels, scallops and cockles may be contaminated with hepatitis A virus.

Shopping
Prevention of food poisoning starts with your trip to the supermarket. Select packaged and canned foods first, saving frozen for last so it doesnt thaw. Look for expiration dates on labels and never buy outdated food. Likewise, check the use by or sell by date on dairy products and pick those that will stay fresh longest in your refrigerator. Dont buy food in cans or jars that are bulging, dented or cracked or have loose or bulging lids. Avoid foods containing raw eggs, such as homemade ice cream, mayonnaise, eggnog, cookie dough, and cake batter, mayonnaise, and eggnog, because they carry a Salmonella risk. Commercial products are usually not a risk because theyre made with pasteurized eggs. Choose eggs that are kept refrigerated in the store. Before buying, open the carton and make sure they are clean and uncracked. Check for cleanliness at the meat or fish counter and the salad bar. (For instance, cooked shrimp lying on the same bed of ice as raw fish could become contaminated.) Select frozen foods and perishables such as meat, poultry or fish last. Put these products in separate plastic bags so that drippings dont contaminate other foods. Dont buy frozen seafood if the packages are open, torn or crushed on the edges. Avoid packages that are above the frost line in the stores freezer. Look for signs of frost or ice crystals inside clear packages this could mean the product has been stored for a long time or thawed and refrozen. If it will take more than an hour to get your groceries home, take an ice chest along to keep frozen and perishable foods cold. !q
