Copyright Law & Ethical Issues Presentation

Grade Level: 11 Subject: Interactive Multimedia Prepared by: Josh Simmons Overview and Purpose: We have been learning about copyright laws and how to seek formal permission to use copyrighted work. In this presentation, students will show a comprehension of copyright law and the implications of violating federal and state laws in multimedia and digital publishing. Tennessee Educational Standards 2.1 Demonstrate work ethics that include integrity, honesty, loyalty, and perseverance that meet industry standards. Research benefits and consequences resulting from the practice of business

2.2 ethics. 2.3 Comprehend copyright laws and their applications to text, visual art, design, music, and photography. 2.4 Research legal responsibilities associated with the use of the Internet as required by federal and state government agencies. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: Explain the difference between copyrighted work and non-copyrighted work. Give examples of copyright free media. Use an internet search to find copyrighted media and contact information for copyright holder. Interpret federal and state law and determine implications of breaking each. Design a presentation on legal issues and ethical issues obtaining to copied media, plagiarism and gaining permission. Obtain formal permission to use work or media in presentation.

Information: Give and/or demonstration necessary information 1. The students will already be familiar with the iPad, as they have been used all semester. 2. The students will need an overview demonstration of Prezi and Keynote. 3. The students should already have a working knowledge of copyright laws and be familiar enough to apply general plagiarism and fair use guidelines to any media or work of art.

Verification: Steps to check for student understanding 1. Students will be quizzed verbally about copyright laws and ethical issues. 2. Students will demonstrate the proper way to obtain permission to use a copyrighted work. 3. Students will give examples of correct and incorrect citation to avoid plagiarism. 4. Students will describe ethical behavior where it applies to copyright law.

Activity: Students will have 1 week of class time to use their personal iPad and create a presentation using Prezi or Keynote. Students will research a subject for presentation and work within federal and state copyright laws ensure the presentation is ethically and legally within the bounds of copyright law. Students will obtain permission from at least one copyright holder to use photographs, videos, quotations, music and visual art within the presentation. Students must also provide correct citation and copyright verification for each. On Friday during the class period, students will give their presentation from their respective iPads via the Apple TV connected to the classroom projector. The student presentations should last no more than 5 minutes each, giving time for all 17 students to present during the 90 minute class. Notes Students should be familiar with iPad technology and how to log into AppleTV, as both are routine in class. Students will be reminded on Thursday that the presentation is due in the next class period, Friday. I will provide a short lecture each day prior to work time. The lecture will give overview at copyright law and plagiarism.
