How would you like to go to camp this summer without ever leaving home? Many boys and girls in Wichita have spent hours of fun in Scott Hawleys Camp Collegiate, a day camp especially designed for boys and girls who are entering third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, or eighth grade. Campers spend their days with friends and counselors doing all of the typical camp things: swimming, arts and crafts, having treats, horseback riding, games and a lot of not-so-traditional things, like feeding and caring for snakes, lizards, and other reptiles; studying ecosystems and astronomy; building woodworking and electronics projects; visiting caves and the Oklahoma salt flats; going to Laser Quest; and competing in science challenges. Kids often say that this camp is one of the best parts of their summer! Note: You may send your children for partial sessions that will be pro-rated accordingly. This course is designed to offer students the equivalent of one-semester study of the concepts and the structure of American government and a onesemester study of the fundamental principles of economics. Completion of this course satisfies the Wichita Collegiate School social studies graduation requirement and the Kansas Board of Regents requirements for a government credit. 6/4-7/13 8:00a-12:00p 10th-12th $721/$700

This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to read and analyze literature. The works covered in this course are some of those that commonly appear on the exam as options for the open essay portion of the AP Literature exam. These are also works that the student may not have covered during their regular English curriculum. This course will help students read and interpret texts and they will have the opportunity to find deeper meaning in those texts. This course is also for students with a love of literature that may want to read and discuss literature in an interactive group setting. The format for this course will be a seminar (group discussion) style setting. Each one week session will also include a short writing component designed to help students organize their ideas and support those ideas with information from the text as they will be asked to do in future English courses and on the AP Literature exam. This course will be offered in three separate one-week sessions. A student may sign up for all three sessions or an individual session. The text should be read prior to the beginning of the course. Students will need to purchase their own copy of the text. The Joy of Genius

AP Biology Jumpstart

Kristin Soupene

While genius is not guaranteed, enjoyment is. For those who enjoy creative writing and/or self-examination, this class will be a welcome change of pace. For this course, our primary text will be How to Think Like Leonardo Davinci by Michael Gelb. The reading load will be relatively light. Most of our time will be spent in writing activities and class experiments (experiments will focus on food, art, and musica good time!). Writing and discovery can and should be fun. My hope for students is that they will renew their love for writing and discover a more profound sense of wonder for the beauty that daily surrounds us. *While having a class early in the morning may be a turn off, I am willing to offer breakfast food and coffee as incentives. (I also need some brain food/ caffeine at that early hour.) ** For the purposes of individual attention and solid discussion, the class will be capped at 12. Should there be enough interest, I am willing to add another section. 1280 6/18-6/28 (M-Th) 8:00a-9:30a Completed 9th $207/$200

Stories of the Southwest: Desert Dreams, Dust and Blood Peter DeVries
In this course, we will focus on two American writers: Cormac McCarthy and Willa Cather, specifically the novels No Country for Old Men and The Professors House. Both are 20th century fiction set deep in the American southwest. One, a modern novel of ragged violence, desperation, and corruption; one a bittersweet tale of reflectiona draught of memory, mixing flavors of love and adventure, disappointment and hope. The intent is threefold: 1) enjoy two excellent novels; 2) examine the literary techniques used by masters of the craft; and 3) prepare for AP style writing prompts and drafting skills. While both texts are relatively easy reads, they are not for the faint of heart. You will be faced with stories that are equal parts gritty, honest, and troubling. *Pieces by both authors are frequently used on the AP Literature Test. **For the purposes of individual attention and solid discussion, the class will be capped at 12. Should there be enough interest, I am willing to add another section. 1290 7/30-8/10 (M-Th) 8:30a-10:00a Completed 9th $207/$200

This program will be under the guidance of Coach Black, Coach Mike Gehrer, and Cam Clark. Coach Black has been coaching speed and strength training for 23 years. Coach Gehrer has been running youth speed and agility camps for the past 8 years at Gehrer Performance Center, and Cam Clark is the head trainer at Newman University and Wichita Collegiate School. Science has proven that ages 7-11 are the most critical years in a childs life for motor skill development. Our program will utilize the most up-to-date research in a fun and friendly environment to build the young athletes physical skills. Through our youth speed training, youth agility training, and youth sports performance training technique, kids will improve coordination and self-esteem. Every athlete will go through an evaluation process to assess strengths and weaknesses in areas such as speed, agility, and coordination, which will allow them to be grouped accordingly. After this first evaluation, the child will be placed in groups based upon performance level and age. Those attending will receive 1 T-shirt. All the drills and activities will be age and skill appropriate. 1640 6/11-7/18 (M-W) 9:45a-10:45a 2nd-5th $207/$200* *If a student attends 1 through 9 sessions you will be billed half price. Karate - Okinawan Goju Ryu

John Leddy

Youth Football Camp

Mike Gehrer & Troy Black

Classes are hard work but enjoyable. The main focus of the class is to teach strength, endurance, coordination, balance, and overall mental and physical discipline. The class core curriculum consists of Kata, which are a series of techniques performed in sequence that contain the essence of Karate. There are also Bunkais, which are two-person drills where you actually learn to apply the techniques you perform in Kata. Finally, we do Kiso Kumite, which is a form of prearranged sparring where you once again perform your technique against a partner in a safe and controlled manner to grasp fully the application of a particular technique. Karate is a great way to improve your physical fitness as well as develop a stronger mind by continuing to push yourself to learn new skills. Great for adults who love to learn, want to stay in shape, and want to find a way to calm their minds. Also great for children ages seven and up to develop positive life-long habits. Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate is being taught by John Leddy, 7th Grade Latin Teacher at WCS. Mr. Leddy has been studying martial arts for the last seventeen years. He is currently a fourth degree black belt in Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate. He started his training in Tae Kwan Do at Wichita State University. After two years he began his study of Karate. He has been training in Karate for fifteen years now and has been teaching for thirteen of those years. John Leddy invites you to come to class as often as you wish on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in the Upper School Basement. Your first uniform is also provided at no extra cost, and there are no testing fees ever. 1800 6/4-7/7 1810 7/9-8/11 3:30p-5:30p (M,T,Th) Any Grade $129.50/$125 9:30a-11:00a (Sat) 3:30p-5:30p(M,T,Th) Any Grade $130/$125 9:30a-11:00a (Sat)

Vinyasa Flow Yoga for Parents

Kristen Boyle

A little yoga for YOU! Vinyasa is a term that covers a broad range of yoga classes. Vinyasa, derived from Sanskrit, means breath-synchronized movement. You will be guided from one pose to the next with an inhale or exhale. The flowing style allows the poses to run together smoothly, and becomes like a dance. The breath-movement connection adds a gentle cardio-element to the stretching and strengthening of the yoga practice. Yoga is effective in calming the mind and relieving everyday body aches and pains. This class is good for all levels, beginner to advanced. 1820 6/18-6/22 1830 6/18-6/22 9:15a-10:30a 10:45a-12:00p Parents Only Parents Only $$78/$75 $$78/$75
