APRIL 4

2012

Dear Parents
This week we welcome Caleb Devery, Liam's little brother, into Manuka and our school community. Term 1 has almost come and gone. Some of the highlights around our school have been: an inquiry journey around the Hauora model and about taking responsibility for making good choices, strong foundation programmes of reading, writing and maths and lots of swimming and athletics! We have also run two community workshops where a range of questions and topics were discussed. We had a good group of parents at both these but if you were not able to

take that opportunity to come along then please check out the 'parent workshop' tab on the website. Paula Stewart goes on Maternity Leave at the end of this term. I would like to acknowledge the huge contribution she makes to the life of our school, both as a classroom teacher and as our sports coordinator. Paula represents the very essence of a team player - she is always willing to help out and support everything that is going on in what ever way she is able. We wish her and her partner Aaron well for the last few months of her pregnancy and look forward to all the stories that a first baby brings! Regards

From strong foundations we grow and stand tall together

These are some of the containers Mitchell, Addisyn and Sarah from Rimu made out of one piece of paper. Sarah's container held 4 and 1/4 cups of beans. That was the container that held the most. Some of us thought that the tallest container would hold the most but that did not happen. We are enjoying discovering which containers hold the most.

Week 10 Term 1
Room MANUKA have had a fantastic term welcoming 11 new 5 year olds and learning the early skills needed to read, write and solve number problems. We have explored the beginnings of making good choices to help us in our wellbeing, in our learning and in how we relate to each other. I am so impressed in the progress the children have made towards these goals - especially in their 'give it a go' attitude and their kindness to each other. Optional homework for the holidays will come home on Thursday - 10 books to keep up the enthusiasm and progress in reading, a holiday diary to write in and some maths basic facts cards in the learning folders. Certificates - Robson and Aimee for writing 3 sentences on one topic. Happy holidays! TOTARATeam Totara Certificates: Jessica Fairbairn for having a kind smile and great leadership skills to quietly help others when needed. Oliver Bragg for being so focused on your work and always putting in 100% Well done everyone on a fantastic Term One! Team Totara deserve to celebrate lots of successes with regard to achieving our goals.Thank you for all the wonderful parent support. I hope that you all have a happy fun-filled family holiday with lots of adventures and lots of chocolate! Kind regards, Della Carr.

KOWHAI What a busy week the Kowhai Kids have had as we complete and celebrate our "Growing From Within" inquiry. We have all set goals to make us healthier and we know we have to participate, and try our best, in order to achieve our goals. Keep an eye on our blog for a slideshow of our goals and a video of our mihis. We can't wait for our Healthy Hooli celebration on Thursday- yum yum! There will be books sent home for the holidays - a little bit everyday really helps to maintain the children's super progress from this term. Have a happy, happy holiday! Room RIMU are all very excited this week as we are to run the assembly on Thursday 5th April. This is the first time for everyone in the class so there are quite a few nervous children. It would be great if you can all come along and support them. I will be sending home a selection of books for the children to read in the holidays as well as some Spelling and Maths. It really makes a difference if the children can do some regularly over the holiday period. I find a little and often is the way to go. Have a great holiday. Certificates: Amelia McIntosh, Jack Scott RATA I can't believe the term is nearly finished. Yesterday we made fruit kebabs and had to make healthy choices as we selected what to put on them. It was hard not to choose too many marshmellows. We used the food pyramid to guide our choices. We put ourselves outside of our comfort zones when we took assembly on Friday. Boy did we feel great about ourselves when we had finished. We even got an email from Mrs Forde telling us how wonderful we were. I hope Easter Bunny spoils you and that you have a restful holiday.

We've also got a 'Kauri show-off' mini documentary on our blog where you can see our progress with our skills projects, as well as a Hauora website Thomas and Katie H have put together to share what we know about the Hauora model. Can you tell we like to share? Thanks to all our parents and friends for all your help for a great term. We are looking forward to seeing everything we've learnt this term about 'Self Improvement' paying off over the year! Mr Herring
