Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media

products?

Naming our project HOSTILITY follows the typical horror convention of having a mysterious, unfriendly and spooky title. This short title clearly represents the genre of the film being a horror and therefore instantly draws in the type of audience who is up for a shocking, frightening experience. To help come up with the films name me and my group carefully looked at the titles of horrors and found that the shorter they were the more intrigued we became thus making us want to watch the film. Short one worded names follow the convention of horror. These film name examples I believe to be too long thus giving too much of the story line away and removing a sense of mystery about the film. These are not typical of the horror convention therefore we decided not to come up with this sort of film name

Using the Earthquake edit effect on the titles makes them appear to the audience in a quick dramatic way. The horror movie This night ill possess your corpse uses the Earthquake/shake effect successfully. This follows the convention of how the titles should transition in for a horror movie. As a group we decided that in our opening sequence we would follow a typically old school convention of colour correcting the majority of the sequence into black and white. This gave the film a darker, gloomier feel creating a scarier atmosphere. The film colours being in black and white also conveniently allowed my group to film at whatever time of day we wanted, making the whole recording process easier. Some of the best horrors were filmed in black and white, one of which being Dracula. This was the film that inspired me to go for black and white colours. Using a Sin City Effect challenges typical horror conventions because of how it is more commonly used in thrillers/dramas. However I believe that this effect works perfectly for our opening sequence in the way that the blood is clearly emphasized to the audience capturing their attention. The blood symbolizes death, danger and pain therefore adds fear and tension to a horror movie. This effect is used in the movie Sin City.

The intended setting and location of our production has also been typical in the sense that it goes along and develops the conventions that are found in a horror setting of a movie. We have filmed in an isolated dark and shady area which gives off many connotations of the production and the genre. Going to the park is something that teenagers love to do. Creating a successful scary film needs to be about something that could happen to the audience watching. Therefore seeing someone brutally murdered in a park all of a sudden gets the viewers attention because they imagine themselves being in that situation. The benefits of this location also meant that we could film at any time of day because the light was blocked by the trees. While filming we also used the trees to our advantage by catching great point of view shots of the antagonist hiding from behind them and this gives off the frightening feeling of having somebody watching you without you knowing (a typical horror convention). Free handling the camera instead of using a tripod gives off a more natural feel that it is from The costume our antagonist is in portrays a sick twisted man a persons view, this is often used in horror films. Overall who likes to intimidate his teenage victims before he kills this adds more tension to our opening sequence making the them. His dark threatening image follows the convention of a audience aware that the protagonist(s) are in a sense of horror in the sense that the murderer is not revealed because danger. A film that uses the same location and camera shots of his mask covering over his face therefore leaving the as ours is wrong turn. audience in suspense. Black trousers, coat and boots give no sign away of this mans identity leaving the audience clueless. We decided not to have our character holding a weapon of any kind because this again leaves more mystery into the death of the character lying on the floor covered in blood. As like the horror movie Scream our antagonist only appears in very short clips. This has been done because we think that it is important that the audience are not sure where and when the murderer will appear. When he does Our antagonist has been made to be shocked out of their appear we wanted the audienceto appear to the audience as a regular seat. teenage student who is making his way home from college. In Some ways we follow the convention of the victim being a normal character. We do this by showing the audience that this situation can happen to anyone therefore involves the standard teenage audience watching. We challenged the horror convention by using only males as the victims instead of an attractive, blonde haired teen. His cap, college bag and Iphone stereotype him as a confident outgoing guy. However when approached with the dead body on the floor his mind goes blank and he is stunned. This is a typical reaction to seeing a dead body and I think our actor does well in showing this shock by his body movements and language used what the f**k!. I believe that the character from the film Attack The Block

Question 2) How does your media product represent particular social groups? Social groups are represented in my opening sequence by the use of Mise en scene. Our protagonists image represents a young teenage student. Wearing a cap called a snap back portrays our character to be a teenager because it is far more common to see that age range wearing them. Teen celebrities such as Justin Bieber make them more and more popular to the teenage public.

We were aware that our actors appearance could have him being mistaken by people as being in his 20s therefore the use of him wearing this hat stereotypes him as being a confident teen aged around 16-19. Our protagonists age matching with our target audiences means that they can simply place themselves in the same position of seeing someone dead in a park and think about how they would react to the situation, this keeps the audience interested in watching on. The new up to date mobile I phone4 has been used as a prop because it is a piece of technology typically used by teenagers. The stereotypical teenager uses their phone 24/7 and is blind too much of the goings on around them. Therefore in my opening sequence it shows perhaps the negatives of being one of those people because if our protagonist had not been listening to music on his phone he may have heard the murderers presence close by. This will add more fear to our audience and may change their decision to play music through their headphones when walking alone.

Music plays an important role in the life of many teens and is a common thing to do when on a journey home. The audience have not been shown what type

of music our character is listening to as we wanted to keep all our characters as mysterious as possible. Originally we had a picture of a playlist with the musician Ed Sheeran however once editing began we decided to leave the artists name out. This was because we did not want to change our audiences perceptions of the character therefore keeping him as mysterious as possible

. Another prop used by our protagonist is a stylish college side bag. This represents him as being a student travelling on his way back from college. It is more likely for him to be coming back from college because of how the light is less bright than it would be in the morning. Many teenagers watching this would use a bag like this too as they are a common style of bag used in education. Our protagonist on 2 occasions says what the fuck!. This type of phrase is used more commonly by teenagers than adults and it is a feature of spontaneous speech. This is a very realistic reaction from a teenager in particular stereotypically from a working class background. If we had

decided to stereotype a middle class college student we may have used language such as oh my goodness. Our film opening sequence is mainly aimed at people in the socio-economic groups C1, C2, D &E which has carefully been selected, bearing in mind the character profiles of the characters within our production. Through the use of costumes our antagonist socio economic group could be identified as he is wearing dark old boots, scruffy baggy trousers and a plain black jacket. Giving him the appearance of being a semi skilled or unskilled manual worker means that because of his occupation he will have lots of spare time on his hands compared to if he belong to a high managerial group. The idea of him having lots of free time means that he has time to stalk and chose his victims adding a sick, sinister feel to the story. This of course is only a perception the audience can make as most of the murderers identity is hidden behind his dark black clothing.

The location in which we filmed was very much upper class because of the large sized houses in the background. The idea of these two working class students being murdered in a middle class area suggests to the audience that they do not belong there and this is

Question 3) What kind of media Institution might distribute your media product and why ?

Production

Distribution

Film Distributors are: Are the companies that is responsible for funding or releasing a film They distribute movies for either public theatrical viewing Or for Home viewing such as: Digital Versatile Disk, Streaming on Demand, television, download (digital distribution) Some distribution companies or individuals have their own distribution networks Or theatrical exhibitors There are various distributors in areas of the world optimum releasing is a UK distributor as is revolver ENT. US distributors could be Warner Bros. or20th Century Fox Optimum Releasing

The film HUSH is a film that I regard to be at a similar recognition under film genres as Hostility; it follows many of the same forms and conventions and also establishes many of the themes that sweet Hostility does. This is one of the reasons for which I have chosen optimum releasing to be the chosen distribution company for Hostility. Link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/optimumreleasing Other Optimum Releasing films similar to mine are:

The distribution company that I would want to work with to release Hostility would be optimum releasing, the reasons for which I would do so is that they have had many years experience and have gained a reputation by distributing successful movies in the industry previously, many of these have been from the same genre as sweet Hostility, so I believe that they would be perfect for the project to ensure maximum profit. I also believe that in the above compilation of selected films from the optimum releasing site, they have shown a great understanding of the various vital codes and conventions that are used in successful media productions in order to make it appeal to the intended audience. They also have a major influence in the UK film industry, I will be getting the publicity and recognition in the film industry strong links with UK cinemas, I also may have the opportunity to work alongside many other movie distributors not only in the UK but worldwide in order to make M.T.J a successful film company. They have also been recognized for having very good financial credibility which suggests more of an inclination to opt for optimum releasing this will mean that I can trust them in ensuring that the financial aspect of the project is kept intact.

By using Optimum Releasing s as my distributor I can take advantage of the social networking that they produce to promote all types of films. Producing a short trailer of Hostility and uploading it to YouTube is a great way to attract a lot of potential consumers as YouTube is commonly used by ages 15-25. If the trailer grabs the audiences attention enough then this will mean a big rise in sales and more potential profit.

Facebook is another way of free word of mouth. Creating a group named Hostility allows the public to like the group and catch all the updates such as when the film is released, sold on DVD/Blue ray, and even aired on television.

As we have a BBFC certificate of our final opening sequence is 15 and above, so we have to aim for the teenage/young adult group, of between 16-25 years old. Also due to Vue Cinemas doing great deals, such as Cheap Tuesdays, Orange Wednesdays and Student Discounts the cinema has become more affordable for a younger audience from the lower socioeconomic classes C1, C2, D and E making them more likely to watch our film.

To see if our film would interest our target audience I gathered some audience profiles: Jamie represents the target audience for my production. He is an 18 year old male, comes from a South London town and loves technology. He loves watching new films at the cinemas, mostly thriller and action films on his free weekends. He plays Xbox, and likes to spend his time at home on Facebook socialising with his friends. His favourite game on the Xbox is Call of duty as there is a lot of action involved. Jamie does an apprenticeship in a live events organisation as a promoter, therefore the socio-economic group that he would belong to would be c1 or D which is Jamie likes to play the target audience that my production group has aimed for. He spends scary games such the wages that he gets from his apprenticeships on new Xbox games and as Dead island late at DVDs. night on his Xbox. He gets a thrill from being scared by the zombies who like to hide and jump out on him.

Jamies favourite Film is saw 3D as it is full of gruesome scenes in which characters are creatively and brutally murdered by jigsaw. Watching these horrible deaths leaves Jamie on the edge of his seat and usually watches this film with his girlfriend and friends.
Jamie owns an IPad to watch and download films on for free, he also uses his IPad to listen to music on, and his favourite music is garage music and

drum and bass.

Above is a screenshot from the Analytics option on the platform youtube that we uploaded our first draft to. This first draft was found most popular in Britain which was the area we targeted because of being on a tight budget. Males aged from 18-34 had watched the video and initially with our target audience being from ages 15-25 this was a big increase in audience age. We still feel that our opening sequence is more suitable for this younger age range however having a wider audience is brilliant for the success of our film as it means more people will watch it. Our video attracted a younger female audience than expected from 13-17 years old. Therefore the film for some of this audience will not be suitable because of it containing swearing and bloody violence giving it an age rating of 15.
