us Course Description Welcome to Calculus. Calculus is a high-level, rigorous math course and will undoubtedly be encountered as a college credit requirement for a variety of career pursuits. To name a few degrees with calculus as a requirement: statistics, actuarial careers, any engineering professions, environmental sciences, computer sciences, medicine, and others. Prepare to master the skills, concepts, and applications of functions, graph analysis, higher degree polynomials, limits, differentiation, integration, and many calculus theorems. There will be a lot of activities, hands-on experiences, group work, individual discovery, competitions, graphing calculator aide, and presentations in my classroom. Emphasis is placed on the graphical nature of functions, problem solving, communication, and application of lifelong learners. My course is about you, and making you armed and powerful with knowledge. Materials The following materials are required in class everyday: - Textbook: Larsons Calculus I with Precalculus: A One-Year Course - Heavy duty binder - Notebook paper and graph paper - TI- 83 Plus or TI-84 Calculator - Pencils!! Grading Policy and Assessments Homework assignments are for your benefit, giving you the opportunity to practice using mathematical strategies. As a result, problem-solving strategies will be more evident to you and patterns more clear. Assignments will be due at the beginning of the following class period. Homework grades will be based on completion and work, NOT accuracy. You should try to work out every problem. A list of answers is not acceptable- I MUST SEE WORK! Quizzes will assess your progress through the units and will be given on scheduled and announced days. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. If you miss a quiz, it will be counted as your dropped quiz. Homework Quizzes are a way for me to really analyze your progress with homework. Expect them every Friday. I will specify approximately four problems from various homework sets throughout the week. I will supply the page numbers of the homework set, the problem number from the set, and the date the homework was assigned. You will be responsible for the work and the solution to the specified problem. The problems I choose to assess in a homework quiz are a good indication as to concepts that will be assessed in tests and quizzes. Homework quizzes will count as part of the quiz grade. With homework quizzes, however, you will be given the opportunity to make up points lost.

~ page 2 ~ Binders are to be kept organized in a chronological manner. I will collect binders on test days along with the test. I will look for a neat and organized section of Notes which you will be responsible for taking during lectures. The Notes need to have the date clearly labeled along with formulas, vocabulary, and key concepts and ideas learned that day. I will also look for a distinct section for homework which is labeled with the day assigned and the complete assignment given (section, page numbers, and problem numbers assigned). Tests assess your mastery of the content at the conclusions of each unit. You will be given a weeks notice before a test and at least one review day before the test. If you are absent the period before a test, you are still responsible for the test. Evaluation of the Student Each quarter will be evaluated on the basis of work done in the following weighted categories: *Daily/Homework(25%) *Quizzes(25%) *Tests(40%) *Binders (10%) The final semester grade will be broken down into three weighted grades: First Quarter: 42% Second Quarter: 42% Final Exam: 16% Letter grades will be assigned based on the following guidelines: >97% A+ 93-96% A 87-89% B+ 83-86% B 76-79% C+ 69-75% C 62-64% D+ 58-61% D 90-92% 80-82% 65-68% 55-57% ABCD-

Absences and Late Work If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what homework was assigned either through JMC, my webpage (refer to the URL on page 3 under Online Communication), looking at the Makeup Binder, or by asking a friend. Make up work in my classroom is consistent with school policy. Check your Student Handbook Under Late Work Policy (9-12th Grade). Classroom Expectations I, Ms. Baker, promise the following to you. I will - always be professional and respectful to you for your experiences and being who you are - be a resource for you as you pursue your goals and future aspirations - be honest and fair - put forth a constant and powerful effort to be the best I possibly can be - never quit on you or myself - be open-minded and willing to learn from everyone and everything I come across - always be aware of how big the impacts of my actions can be whether it is on a single person or the whole world - keep in mind the bigger picture of which I am a part of and will place the emphasis of this class on learning and self-improvement rather than grades and ego - remember that life is too important not to take it seriously and too short not to have fun

I expect the same out of every student in my classroom

I will also post daily lessons plans and homework on my personal webpage at < http://ebaker.hsmath.tripod.com/calculus >. Extra Help I designate every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30- 5:00 as my official office hours. I am in the classroom guaranteed on these days at these hours unless I make a clear announcement otherwise. You may schedule an appointment with me for any other time before or after school as you feel the need. I love giving extra help for anyone who is willing to let me. Have your homework out ready for me to check and your materials ready on your desk. Notebooks should be open to a warm-up section in which you are to be completing the warm-up problem(s) of the day. These warm-ups serve as practice ACT problems, tricky mind teasers worth extra credit, or necessary review of important skills applicable to the days lesson. I check homework during this time. - 10 minutes: Discussion of review problem and go over questions from homework - 20 minutes: New Content Presentation- Student run activities, lecture, group work, individual work - 10 minutes: Homework start
