Forover50years,theAmericanAcademyofEnvironmentalMedicine(AAEM)hasbeenstudying

andtreatingtheeffectsoftheenvironmentonhumanhealth.Inthelast20years,ourphysiciansbegan seeingpatientswhoreportedthatelectricpowerlines,televisionsandotherelectricaldevicescauseda widevarietyofsymptoms.Bythemid1990s,itbecameclearthatpatientswereadverselyaffectedby electromagneticfieldsandbecomingmoreelectricallysensitive.Inthelastfiveyearswiththeadventof wirelessdevices,therehasbeenamassiveincreaseinradiofrequency(RF)exposurefromwireless devicesaswellasreportsofhypersensitivityanddiseasesrelatedtoelectromagneticfieldandRF exposure.MultiplestudiescorrelateRFexposurewithdiseasessuchascancer,neurologicaldisease, reproductivedisorders,immunedysfunction,andelectromagnetichypersensitivity. TheelectromagneticwavespectrumisdividedintoionizingradiationsuchasultravioletandX raysandnonionizingradiationsuchasultrasoundandradiofrequency(RF),whichincludesWiFi,cell phones,andSmartMeterwirelesscommunication.Ithaslongbeenrecognizedthationizingradiation canhaveanegativeimpactonhealth.However,theeffectsofnonionizingradiationonhumanhealth recentlyhavebeenseen.Discussionsandresearchofnonionizingradiationeffectscentersaround thermalandnonthermaleffects.AccordingtotheFCCandotherregulatoryagencies,onlythermal effectsarerelevantregardinghealthimplicationsandconsequently,exposurelimitsarebasedon thermaleffectsonly.1 Whileitwaspracticaltoregulatethermalbioeffects,itwasalsostatedthatnonthermaleffects

arenotwellunderstoodandnoconclusivescientificevidencepointstononthermalbasednegative healtheffects.1FurtherargumentsaremadewithrespecttoRFexposurefromWiFi,celltowersand smartmetersthatduetodistance,exposuretothesewavelengthsarenegligible.2However,manyin vitro,invivoandepidemiologicalstudiesdemonstratethatsignificantharmfulbiologicaleffectsoccur fromnonthermalRFexposureandsatisfyHillscriteriaofcausality.3Geneticdamage,reproductive defects,cancer,neurologicaldegenerationandnervoussystemdysfunction,immunesystem 1

dysfunction,cognitiveeffects,proteinandpeptidedamage,kidneydamage,anddevelopmentaleffects haveallbeenreportedinthepeerreviewedscientificliterature. GenotoxiceffectsfromRFexposure,includingstudiesofnonthermallevelsofexposure,

consistentlyandspecificallyshowchromosomalinstability,alteredgeneexpression,genemutations, DNAfragmentationandDNAstructuralbreaks.411Astatisticallysignificantdoseresponseeffectwas demonstratedbyMaschevichetal.,whoreportedalinearincreaseinaneuploidyasafunctionofthe SpecificAbsorptionRate(SAR)ofRFexposure.11Genotoxiceffectsaredocumentedtooccurinneurons, bloodlymphocytes,sperm,redbloodcells,epithelialcells,hematopoietictissue,lungcellsandbone marrow.AdversedevelopmentaleffectsduetononthermalRFexposurehavebeenshownwith decreasedlittersizeinmicefromRFexposurewellbelowsafetystandards.12TheWorldHealth OrganizationhasclassifiedRFemissionsasagroup2Bcarcinogen.13Cellulartelephoneuseinrural areaswasalsoshowntobeassociatedwithanincreasedriskformalignantbraintumors.14 ThefactthatRFexposurecausesneurologicaldamagehasbeendocumentedrepeatedly.

Increasedbloodbrainbarrierpermeabilityandoxidativedamage,whichareassociatedwithbrain cancerandneurodegenerativediseases,havebeenfound.4,7,1517Nittbyetal.demonstrateda statisticallysignificantdoseresponseeffectbetweennonthermalRFexposureandoccurrenceof albuminleakacrossthebloodbrainbarrier.15Changesassociatedwithdegenerativeneurological diseasessuchasAlzheimers,ParkinsonsandAmyotrophicLateralSclerosis(ALS)havebeen reported.4,10Otherneurologicalandcognitivedisorderssuchasheadaches,dizziness,tremors, decreasedmemoryandattention,autonomicnervoussystemdysfunction,decreasedreactiontimes, sleepdisturbancesandvisualdisruptionhavebeenreportedtobestatisticallysignificantinmultiple epidemiologicalstudieswithRFexposureoccurringnonlocally.1821 NephrotoxiceffectsfromRFexposurealsohavebeenreported.Adoseresponseeffect

wasobservedbyIngoleandGhoshinwhichRFexposureresultedinmildtoextensivedegenerative changesinchickembryokidneysbasedondurationofRFexposure.24RFemissionshavealsobeen showntocauseisomericchangesinaminoacidsthatcanresultinnephrotoxicityaswellas hepatotoxicity.25 Electromagneticfield(EMF)hypersensitivityhasbeendocumentedincontrolledanddouble

blindstudieswithexposuretovariousEMFfrequencies.Reaetal.demonstratedthatunderdouble blindplacebocontrolledconditions,100%ofsubjectsshowedreproduciblereactionstothatfrequency 2

towhichtheyweremostsensitive.22Pulsedelectromagneticfrequencieswereshowntoconsistently provokeneurologicalsymptomsinablindedsubjectwhileexposuretocontinuousfrequenciesdidnot.23 Althoughthesestudiesclearlyshowcausalityanddisprovetheclaimthathealtheffectsfrom

RFexposureareuncertain,thereisanothermechanismthatproveselectromagneticfrequencies, includingradiofrequencies,cannegativelyimpacthumanhealth.Governmentagenciesandindustryset safetystandardsbasedonthenarrowscopeofNewtonianorclassicalphysicsreasoningthatthe effectsofatomsandmoleculesareconfinedinspaceandtime.Thismodelsupportsthetheorythata mechanicalforceactsonaphysicalobjectandthus,longrangeexposuretoEMFandRFcannothavean impactonhealthifnosignificantheatingoccurs.However,thisisanincompletemodel.Aquantum physicsmodelisnecessarytofullyunderstandandappreciatehowandwhyEMFandRFfieldsare harmfultohumans.26,27Inquantumphysicsandquantumfieldtheory,mattercanbehaveasaparticle orasawavewithwavelikeproperties.Matterandelectromagneticfieldsencompassquantumfields thatfluctuateinspaceandtime.Theseinteractionscanhavelongrangeeffectswhichcannotbe shielded,arenonlinearandbytheirquantumnaturehaveuncertainty.Livingsystems,includingthe humanbody,interactwiththemagneticvectorpotentialcomponentofanelectromagneticfieldsuchas thefieldnearatoroidalcoil.26,28,29Themagneticvectorpotentialisthecouplingpathwaybetween biologicalsystemsandelectromagneticfields.26,27Onceapatientsspecificthresholdofintensityhas beenexceeded,itisthefrequencywhichtriggersthepatientsreactions.

LongrangeEMForRFforcescanactoverlargedistancessettingabiologicalsystemoscillating

inphasewiththefrequencyoftheelectromagneticfieldsoitadaptswithconsequencestootherbody systems.Thisalsomayproduceanelectromagneticfrequencyimprintintothelivingsystemthatcanbe longlasting.26,27,30Researchusingobjectiveinstrumentationhasshownthatevenpassiveresonant circuitscanimprintafrequencyintowaterandbiologicalsystems.31Thesequantumelectrodynamic effectsdoexistandmayexplaintheadversehealtheffectsseenwithEMFandRFexposure.TheseEMF andRFquantumfieldeffectshavenotbeenadequatelystudiedandarenotfullyunderstoodregarding humanhealth. Becauseofthewelldocumentedstudiesshowingadverseeffectsonhealthandthenotfully

understoodquantumfieldeffect,AAEMcallsforexercisingprecautionwithregardtoEMF,RFand generalfrequencyexposure.Inanerawhenallsocietyreliesonthebenefitsofelectronics,wemust findideasandtechnologiesthatdonotdisturbbodilyfunction.Itisclearthatthehumanbodyuses electricityfromthechemicalbondtothenerveimpulseandobviouslythisorderlysequencecanbe 3

disturbedbyanindividualspecificelectromagneticfrequencyenvironment.Neighborsandwhole communitiesarealreadyexercisingprecaution,demandingabstentionfromwirelessintheirhomesand businesses. Furthermore,theAAEMasksfor: AnimmediatecautiononSmartMeterinstallationduetopotentiallyharmfulRFexposure. AccommodationforhealthconsiderationsregardingEMFandRFexposure,includingexposure towirelessSmartMetertechnology. IndependentstudiestofurtherunderstandthehealtheffectsfromEMFandRFexposure. Recognitionthatelectromagnetichypersensitivityisagrowingproblemworldwide. Understandingandcontrolofthiselectricalenvironmentalbombardmentfortheprotectionof society. ConsiderationandindependentresearchregardingthequantumeffectsofEMFandRFon humanhealth.
