Factors Affecting Early Child Development

By Margaux Judge, eHow Contributor

A number of factors affect early childhood development

Early childhood development can be affected by a number of factors, and it's impossible to underestimate the immense importance of the early development of children. According to the National Scientific Council Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, "Child development is a foundation for community development and economic development, as capable children become the foundation of a prosperous and sustainable society."

1. Socioeconomic Status
o

According to a research paper by Vonnie C. McLoyd at Duke University, "Recent research consistently reports that persistent poverty has more detrimental effects

on IQ, school achievement, and socioemotional functioning than transitory poverty, with children experiencing both types of poverty generally doing less well than never-poor children." The paper goes on to state that in certain groups, childhood poverty is an epidemic. More recent research illustrates why poverty has such an effect on development. According to the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, "Poverty is important because economic disadvantage may have cascading effects on many aspects of family life."

Relationships
o

Research further indicates that relationships play a major part of developing brain architecture of a child. This occurs not only during the first few months of life, but also in the first few years. The National Scientific Council on the Developing Child states that, "We have long known that interactions with parents, caregivers, and other adults are important in a child's life, but new evidence shows that these relationships actually shape brain circuits and lay the foundation for later developmental outcomes, from academic performance to mental health and interpersonal skills." The Council further states that many U.S. policies, such as child protection services and parental leave, do not take into account these relationships and their importance.

Quality of Child Care

o

The quality of child care has an effect on early childhood development. One study found that kids who attended child care centers that met quality guidelines had fewer behavioral problems, as well as higher language comprehension and school readiness scores. Furthermore, research by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that: "The quality of child care during the first 3 years was related to children's school readiness, expressive language, and receptive language at 3 years." The research concludes by suggesting that higher wages and better training for child care staff, along with improved child-to-caregiver ratios could make a significant difference in the early development of children.
