D11 Debuts Propane Powered School Bus

D11s Yellow School Bus Goes Green

Colorado Springs School District 11 announced that it has a lease-tobuy program with Colorado West, a distributor of Blue Bird Corporation, for a 2013 Blue Bird Propane-Powered Vision school bus. District 11 is the only school district in the Pikes Peak region with a propane bus as part of their fleet. District 11 will be testing this bus during 2012, to evaluate its performance, reliability, and fiscal viability as a potential future alternative to their gasoline and diesel school buses. These buses are built with safety, efficiency, and performance in mind. With similar design features as Blue Birds conventional buses, this bus is fueled by propane with the ROUCH CleanTech Liquid Propane Autogas Fuel System. It meets all the same exacting safety standards as other Blue Bird products and meets all School Bus Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, including fuel system integrity for liquefied natural gas. District 11 continues to look for ways to improve our green efforts and be a responsible community partner, the district said in a statement announcing the availability of the bus. CNG, Biofuels Get Federal Funding

The feds have announced $44 million in new funding toward research and development for using biofuels and natural gas as transportation fuels. The DOEs Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) program will provide $30 million for research into natural gas, and the DOE is also making $14 million available for algae-based biofuels R&D. The ARPA-E funding will support a new initiative called Methane Opportunities for Vehicular Energy, or MOVE. This R&D will emphasize finding ways to develop natural gas storage technologies that are lower in cost and can operate at lower tank pressures. ARPA-E will mainly fund projects that focus on the creation of lightweight tanks and absorbing materials that are sized properly for passenger vehicles. From NGT News

Boulder Electric Vehicle has delivered its very first production vehicle! The initial DV-500 has been sold to Denver-area Precision Plumbing, Heating & Cooling who have made a commitment to buy 20 of the all-electrics. The new Boulder EV trucks performance differs slightly from the original prototype debuted last year. The production version boasts an 80-kWh battery pack made up of China-sourced lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells that weigh in at 1,300 lbs and are said to be good for 120 miles of range. Power comes from an 80-kW AC motor that gives the 7,000-lb truck a 70 mileper-hour top speed. Precision Plumbing's Tom Robichaud says that despite the higher up-front costs, he expects to save $6,000 to $8,000 per vehicle per year in lower operating costs and anticipates the trucks to be good for 300,000 miles. Currently, he says, the Sprinter vans he uses now are replaced after 100,000 miles. For more, visit AutoBlog.com

Detroit Automakers Add CNG To Their Truck Line

Announcements from GM and Chrysler Group this week suggest that two of Detroit's Big Three see the pickup truck market, particularly in the commercial and fleet sectors, as a potential area of growth for vehicles powered by compressed natural gas. GM says its 2013 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 HD extended-cab pickups will be available as bi-fuel models featuring a CNG fueling option. The power plant is the Vortec 6.0 L V8 engine, which will switch between CNG and gasoline fuel. GM has focused much of its initial product messaging on the trucks' range: a conservative 650 miles between the gasoline and CNG. These pickups complement a burgeoning market for GM vans equipped with CNG, such as the Chevrolet Express 2500 and 3500 cargo vans that fleets such as AT&T are adding to their lots in increasing numbers. For its part, Chrysler's Ram Truck division is planning to manufacture a factory-built CNG model for fleet and commercial customers in North America. According to Chrysler, the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty CNG pickup will feature the 5.7 L HEMI V-8 modified to operate on both CNG and gasoline. The engine has redesigned cylinder heads with CNG-compatible valves and valve-seat materials, along with a CNG fuel rail and injector set. New spark plugs and powertrain control modules are also part of the platform. Both GM and Chrysler will deliver their CNG offerings through existing channels. GM will build the Silverado and Sierra in its Fort Wayne, Ind., facility and then ship these vehicles to IMPCO Technologies Inc. in Union City, Ind., which will install an aftermarket CNG bi-fuel delivery and storage system. DOE: 4 New Partners On The Clean Fleets Team

Energy Secretary Steven Chu has announced that four new corporate partnersBest Buy, Johnson Controls, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Veoliaare joining the Energy Department's National Clean Fleets Partnership, a broad public-private partnership that assists the nation's largest fleet operators in reducing the amount of gasoline and diesel they use nationwide. The new partners join with 14 other major national companies in committing to improve the fuel economy of the commercial fleets, integrate alternative technology vehicles like natural gas trucks and electric vehicles into their fleets, and reduce their overall fuel use. Collectively, the National Clean Fleets Partners operate more than a million commercial vehicles nationwide, accounting for more than 12% of all commercial vehicles on American roads. "As part of the President's all-of-the-above approach to reducing fuel costs for American consumers and businesses, the NCFP helps leading U.S. companies reduce their fuel use, save money, and become models for fleets across the nation to improve their efficiency," said Chu. "By adopting alternative fuels, advanced vehicles and by making their operations smarter and more fuel-efficient, these national partners are increasing their competitiveness
