Ethanol Is Reducing Oil Dependence

Americas addiction to foreign oil has had a significant impact on our economy and our national security. The millions of barrels of petroleum imported to the United States not onl y cost billions of dollars, they also require putting military lives in danger protecting the fuel suppl y lines. The onl y effective strategy for improving U.S. energy security is in reducing the nations oil dependence. At 10 percent of the U.S. fuel supply, used in 97 percent of the nations gasoline, ethanol provides a domestic, renewable alternative to imported oil. In 2011, the use of 13.9 billion gallons of Ameri can ethanol helped reduce the need for imported oil by 485 million barrels. That is roughly equivalent to 13 percent of total U.S. crude oil imports, saving the Ameri can econom y $49. 7 billion. MotorWeek is once again features barrels. That is roughl y equivalent to 13 percent of total U.S. crude oil imports, saving the Ameri can econom y $49. 7 billion. Reducing oil import dependency has been a national security priority and policy objective since the 1970s. Yet, only since 2005, the year the renewable fuel standard (RFS) was first enacted, has the U.S. seen a reversal of the long-term trend of increasing oil import dependence. During this time frame, Americas oil demand has decreased while imports have fallen from 60 percent to 45 percent. FTA Program Aims To Make Fuel Cells Work For Fleets

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced this week that it is putting more than $13 million to work across 11 projects as a part of the National Fuel Cell Bus Program (NFC BP). The Obama administration has stated that the goal of the initiative, which debuted in 2005, is to support the commercialization of these advanced vehicle technologies and expedite their deplo yment in U. S. transit-bus fleets. For fleet managers, the cost savings associated with running hydrogen fuel cell buses in lieu of diesel -powered transit are compelling. The FTA and National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimate that each fuel cell bus eliminates the consumption of 9,000 gallons of diesel annuall y, which equates to a per-vehicle savings exceeding $35,000 a year. However, the current economics of purchasing new fuel cell buses or converting existi ng vehicles are a hindrance to wide-scale deplo yment. Three nonprofit organizations - the Northeast Advanced Vehi cle Consortium; the Center for Transportation and the Environment; and CALSTART - have been selected to oversee the projects. $125 Million in EV Charging Stations Comes to California

The California Public Utilities Commission has announced a $120 million dollar settlement with NRG Energy Inc. that will fund the construction of a statewide network of EV charging stations, including at least 200 public fast-charging stations and another 10,000 plug-in units at 1,000 locations across the state. The settlement stems from California's energy crisis. The Governor also announced that he has signed an executive order laying the foundation for 1.5 million zero emission vehicles on California's roadways by 2025. The settlement resolves ten -year-old claims against a subsidiary of Dynegy Inc., then a co-owner with NRG of the portfolio of power generating plants currentl y owned by NRG in California, for costs of long-term power contracts signed in March 2001. NRG assumed full responsibility for resolving this matter in 2006 when NRG acquired D ynegy's 50% interest in the assets. One hundred million dollars from the settlement will fund the fast-charging stations and the installation of the plug-in units and electrical upgrades, at no cost to taxpayers. The network of charging stations funded by the settlement will be installed in the San Francisco Bay Area, the San Joaquin Valley, the Los Angeles Basin and San Diego County. This new infrastructure network is a breakthrough in encouraging consumer adoption of electric vehicles and will contribute significantly to achieving California's clean car goals. Pikes Peak Hill Climb Champ Goes Electric in 2012

Thank you!
The 2011 Southern Colorado Clean Cities Annual Report has been completed, and we couldnt hav e done it without your help! With input from local fleets, the report helps the Department of Energy get an accurate snapshot of the alternativ e fuels usage by fleets and av ailability of fuels in our community. W hile were still awaiting formal certification by the DOE before making the full report public, we are happy to announce that preliminary data shows more than 830,000 gasoline gallon equivalents were reduced in southern Colorado due to the efforts of fleet inv estments in alternativ e fuels! That equates to a greenhouse gas emission reduction of nearly 5700 tons! The report also shows that more than 2000 alternativ e fuels v ehicles are a part of fleets within southern Colorado 2000 vehicles! If youd like a copy of the full report once its been certified by the DOE, please contact Coordinator Dianne Bertini at dianne@cleancitiescolorado.org

Last year, hill climber Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima became the first man to conquer Pikes Peak in under 10 minutes, driving a raceprepped Suzuki that was bleeding coolant and steering fluid by the time it crossed the finish line. This year, the 61-year-old plans to beat his record in this -- a custom-built electric car. If he succeeds, it will be the most impressive accomplishment by an electric racer in history. Tajima does have some benefits to running electric over the 12.4-mile course, even if he won't be able to match the 847-hp output of his 2011 ride.

his 2011 ride. Most gaspowered cars have to use massive turbochargers to suck enough air at altitudes topping 9,000 ft., and many overheat; neither should be an issue in an EV. Last year, Chad Hord put a Nissan Leaf on the route and finished in 14 minutes, 33 seconds, a record Tajima should smash without issue. The fastest custom-built EV run last year finished in 12:20 -- and had to run part of the course on gravel, which has since been paved over. Article from Yahoo Autos.

Chevy Volts See Record Sales In March

The plug-in vehicle sales situation is heating up, and Chevrolet is looking especially good now that its plug-in hybrid Volt has had it best sales month ever. Looks like Bob Lutz knew what he was talking about. Chevy sold 2,289 Volts in March, up from 1,023 last month and 608 in March 2011. This beats the previous high-sales mark by almost 800 units. In December 2011, Chev y sold 1,529 Volts. Meanwhile, Nissan sold 579 Leafs in March, up from 478 Leafs in Februar y and just 298 in March 2011. 579 is not a record, though, as the best Leaf sales month ever was in June 2011, when it sold 1,708 units. Both Chevy's and Nissan's overall vehicle sales for March were up around 12 percent.

Daniels Long Chevrolet has a GM issued Volt that is available for fleets to demo for up to 3-4 days. Contact: Mitch Maltry, Fleet Manager, 719-632-5591, mmaltry@phillong.com to reserve the Volt for trial fleet usage today!

Johnson Controls Signs Major Battery Contract

The United States Advanced Battery Consortium LLC (USABC ), an organization jointly operated by Chrysler, Ford and GM, has awarded a $5.48 million contract to Johnson Controls Inc. for the development of lithium-ion battery technology for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The two-year program, which is a 50/50 cost -share contract between the USABC and the U.S. Department of Energy, is aimed at increasing the volumetric energy density of hard-cased prismatic cell technology that USABC and Johnson Controls have already developed. A higher energy density will reduce the volume, mass and cost of these cells, the companies say. This new contract is USABC's third with Johnson Controls.
