Lovin Addition - You will need small manipulatvies, such as heart candies. Students roll two dice to determine how many items to place in each heart. Then they add them and write the equations. Ten Frame Toss Youll need 10 hearts for this activity. Create the hearts by making die cuts in two different colors and gluing them back-to-back (like two-color counters). Students toss the hearts out of a cup and arrange them on the ten frame mat. Then they color a ten frame and write the addition sentence on the recording sheet. How Big is Your Heart? Students use candy hearts or heart manipulatives to measure each heart and record the number. Cover the Hearts Youll need dice and manipulatives (hearts, cubes, etc). Students work in pairs. On their turn, students roll a die and place that many counters on their board. First to fill their board wins. Increase the difficulty by adding a +/- cube. Add & Cover Students work in pairs. Each child rolls two dice, counts the dots, and marks the sum with a bingo marker. First to fill their board wins. Candy Heart Patterns Students create patterns with candy hearts. Then they record their patterns by coloring the recording sheet. Candy Heart Graph Students sort and graph candy hearts.
Skip Counting Students cut and paste hearts in sequence on a sentence strip. Counting Candy Students sequence the numeral cards and use tongs to place the correct number of heart candies on each heart. Ten Frame Match Students match the ten frame cards to the corresponding numeral cards. Then they color in the ten frames on the recording sheet.
LIteracy Centers:
Fill Your Heart With Words Fill small heart containers with letter tiles to spell sight words. Students will choose a heart, unscramble the word, and write it on the recording sheet. A Heart Full of Words Print the hearts on colored paper and program them with sight words. Students will choose a card, read the word, and mark it on their recording sheet. The Sounds of My Heart Students will choose an object out of a valentine-themed bucket. They will say the word and mark/write the beginning sound on their sheet. Note: You could have them identify the ending sounds for more of a challenge. Roll a Word Students roll a cube, read the word, and write it on the graph. Program your sight words on the bottom row of the graph. A template for Roll & Learn Pocket Cubes is included. Spin a Sound Students spin the spinner and say the word. They write the beginning sound on the graph.
Syllable Stamp Students say the words and stamp the syllables with a bingo marker or heart stamp. CVC Heart Match Puzzles Students match the heart halves so the words match the correct pictures. Alphabet Sound Puzzles Students match the heart halves so that the letters match the correct pictures.
