What is a youthful population? A population that primarily consists of youths Define fertility rate? The ratio of births in an area to the population of that area. Always compared to per 1000 population per year.

workers. There'll also be a slower rate of development in the country as well as increased competition for land and resources. With most people in poverty, it would be very difficult to afford suitable health care and diseases would quickly spread resulting in a high death rate for the country. [4 mark] An extremely high fertility rate means a high dependant population and possibly low working population. This makes it hard for workers to support families or others. This then results into poverty. What will Ugandas growing population need? [4 mark] jobs, homes, healthcare and education How could a high fertility rate cause conflict? [2 mark] It creates a competition for resources and land which can cause conflict. What can help a country like Uganda reduce its fertility rate? [3 mark] strong political will from the countries governments to cut down on the fertility rate. Why does the Ugandan government not see the population explosion as a problem? [3 mark] They see it as a great resource and are not worried about it. They believe that a bigger internal market and workforce will boost their economic prospects. What is the contraception situation in Uganda? [5 mark] The situation is that a very low percentage of women in Uganda would use contraceptives. They believe a bigger family is a sign of security (cultural). They also have fears of high levels of infant mortality. Contraceptives are also not supplied in Ugandan clinics, and cost is not the problem. A three-month supply of birth-control pills costs about 25 cents as well as condoms being free for the men. The problem is that Medical aid and donors have completely shifted their focus to HIV/Aids.
