Little aircraft with a great mission To the Czech Republic, landlocked far from the seas in the heart of Europe, the aviation opens the ocean of air and brings closer the remote horizons. Certainly this fact and the traditional affinity to the technical and artistic creativity led (since the establishment of the independent Czechoslovakia in 1918) here in Czechia (and later on in Slovakia, too) to the development and growth of aviation industry and of transport, sports and touring aviation in general. Just in the pre-war period the Czechoslovak aviation industry developed and produced in series 50 diverse types of touring and sports aircraft. Over 40 types of these categories and some 20 types of gliders were developed, produced in substantial numbers and exported by Czechoslovak factories between 1945 and 1990. The political and social change following the 1990 brought a major growth in the recreational flying with ultralight aircraft. Many of these aircraft were designed and built by amateurs, but a large number is now manufactured professionally by small and mediumsized aviation companies. The administrative and legal work and care of the complete realm of ultraligth flying was in the Czech Republic entrusted by law to the Czech Light Aircraft Association (LAA R), The LAA, during its twenty years of operation, has certified and approved manufacture of nearly 50 types of aircraft. The Registry of the LAA R now keeps records of two and half thousand of mostly private ultralight aircraft. Besides production for the

domestic use the Czech companies export yearly the world over about 500 light aircraft, especially in the UL and LSA categories. The Czech Republic belongs to the top producers of this kind of aviation equipment. The Czech producers of parachutes and paragliders are proud of the same success like their "winged" counterparts. Many sports parachutists and paragliding pilots now descend and fly on the equipment Made in Czech Republic. The Czech technical universities support in their syllabi all categories of General Aviation. A good picture of the standard of the Czech aviation is provided by the number of medals brought home by our sport aviators from the World, European and international contests in the ultralight flying, paragliding, parachuting, soaring, aerobatics and navigation rallies. The Czech Republic is a country of recreational and sports flying, a country of a developed aviation industry. Our task is to uphold the tradition that machines with the proud Czech "OK" in their registration or in their birth licence continue to be an example of the creative technical mastery and aesthetic delight. To care that the light flying machines would shorten the distances between people and provide joy and pleasure to their crews and onlookers alike, brought sporting performance and healthy thrill. We believe that fulfilling these aims is proven and confirmed by the participation of Czech aircraft at this Europe's largest General Aviation show.

Certification stress / strength tests


Serve to prove the basic structural strength of all primary structure assemblies of the aircraft, such as wing, fuselage, empennage etc.
the tests are carried out by the manufacturer under the supervision from the LAA R the tests are carried out by simple loading methods the tests are carried out until the calculated limit stress/load is achieved, while the visual checks and measurements of the deformation are carried out too

The concept of the tests


Each structure has therefore to pass a system of strength tests, covering the requirements of the regulations to at least the calculated loads. The tests are carried out at normal temperatures, therefore various additional coefficients are applied to the results to cater for the specific thermal properties of composites as deemed necessary.

With the wings the ultimate strength (loading to destruction) tests are preferred to ascertain the actual strength reserves of the airframe. Often the failed critical points of structures are appropriately strengthened and the tests are repeated to find eventual other critical points. Cooperation with the Institute of Aerospace Engineering of Brno University of Technology takes place here. The tests results are in case of failures compared to the design calculations and thus they serve to precise design calculaton methods.

Brno University of Technology in the aerospace research and development


The aviation education has a long-standing tradition at the universities of Brno; it brought, besides e.g. the development of the turbine aero engines, also some pioneering aircraft designs and high-performance gliders of the thirties and sixties. In 1982 at the Brno University of Technology the Aviation department has been re-established and in 1993 the University had founded its Institute of Aerospace Engineering (IAE), led by Prof. Ing. Antonn Ptk, CSc., as a part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The IAE task is to educate aviation professionals and to undertake scientific and research activities. The Institute offers master degree in aircraft design and in aircraft operations, a baccalaureate study for professional pilots, using its flying school, and also the graduate (PhD) studies. The work of the IAE is from the beginning aimed at a close cooperation with companies of the Czech aerospace industry and currently also at some European Community projects. In 2000 the Aerospace Research Centre (ARC) has been created, based on the programme of research centres of the Ministry of Youth, Education and Sports of the Czech Republic (MMT). The Aerospace Research Centre's work is supervised by a fifteen-member council, with an absolute majority of industry representatives, thus the Centre ensures a transfer of research results to the aviation industry and the feedback of the industry knowledge to the research sites. The activities of the IAE and ARC are aimed at aerodynamics, modern technologies and materials, systems' reliability, hydraulic systems, space research and at the aeronautical structures, strength and life of aircraft and also at the economic aspects of the aircraft development. An important asset of the IAE is the test facility with the Czech CAA certificate for static and fatigue testing of aircraft structures. The wide scope of work is documented by some of the many tasks in which the IAE participated or participates. Since 1994 the U.S.H. Production of Rescue Systems is developing, producing and providing after sales support to the ballistic deployed parachute systems. They use for their operation energy of a rocket motor. While the majority of USHs BR systems were installed in the UL aircraft, currently a system for aircraft of the LSA category, so widespread in the USA, is being developed. It has to cater for the higher, 600 kg weight. The parameters and quality of the already developed and approved products of the USH are being constantly upgraded. The MarS, a.s. a Czech company, is the largest producer of parachutes and prachuting equipment in the Central-European region. The long-time experience in development and production became a basis for the line of the ATL and PTCH rescue (safety) parachutes. Currently the MarS a.s. produces and markets four types of back-parachutes and two types of seat rescue parachutes. They are slated for use in emergency by pilots of sports aircraft, gliders or helicopters. A number of actual, live jumps in the recent years, especially during gliders crashes, prove the reliability of MarS parachutes. The novelty for the 2009 is the use of the ATL parachutes with a cable version of the MPAAD safety device (based on the requirements of the Czech Armed Forces). This combination of parachute and device increases the probability of pilots rescue in emergency, when for whatever reason he would be unable to deploy the parachute. The MPAAD would do it for him automatically. Another novelty is an increase in the re-packaging cycle of the ATL parachutes to 365 days.

Sky Paragliders is a Czech manufacturer with seat in Northern Moravia with yearly production of up to 1360 paragliders, 6500 reserve parachutes and about 960 harnesses. The complete production, marketing and sale/after sale services is in high season provided for by up to 100 employees. The company has its own production capacity with the latest production technologies for paragliding equipment manufacturing - automatic cutting device, automatic sewing/stitching machines and the CNC technology for strap and line system adjustments. Sky Paragliders certifies all its products both in the DHV and EN laboratories. Sky Paragliders holds the DHV status of a manufacturer and is just about to finish its ISO certification now.

W-Motor-Service is a small Czech company with fifteen years of tradition, active in the field of repair, restoration, design and building of current and vintage/veteran aircraft engines and airframes. Among the more common production engines we repair and refurbish mainly the Walter Minor line and the M series (Avia) for the Zlin aerobatic and touring aircraft. Of the historic engines we maintain and repair mainly the radials - Shvetsov ASh-21 (7 cylinders), ASh-62 (9 cylinders), ASh-82 (14 cylinders) and others. Come and fly-in to see

The Czech Republic lies land-locked among many countries in the very heart of Europe. Thanks to its location it experienced many dramatic moments during the ages, but it also became a meeting point of European cultures, growing, welcoming and giving home to many world-class thinkers, writers, architects, painters, sculptors and musicians. One meets their ideas materialised in works of art gracing the historic Czech towns and cities, castles and chateaux as well as country manors. Paying a visit to the capital of Prague, to Moravian Krom, to South Bohemian esk Krumlov and many other places is therefore akin to taking a living arts history course, it is a meeting with beauty. Also the nature of Czechia is something to behold - it offers deep forests with lurking game, slopes of mountains, both steep ranges and gentle uplands, fertile basins and lowlands around curving rivers, a fisher's paradise. The vast mirrors of ponds and deep river dam reservoirs teem with fowl and fish. Flying over the landscape of Czech Republic you will enjoy the kaleidoscopic change of shapes and colours beneath the wings pass the large, neatly tilled fields, apple orchards, pictur-

esque villages and colourful cities with parks and gardens. It is without doubt these romantic vistas, offered by flying over our lands, contributed to make flying so popular activity in our country we simply feel that the air is our sea. In the Czech Republic there are nine international aerodromes, over fifty general aviation airfields, and over hundred and fifty sports airfields and airstrips, including the ultralight ones. In the mountains there are many summits, ridges and slopes with launch platforms and ramps for paragliding and hang gliding. In the recent years, the free flying over Czechia has attracted many pilots from abroad, in addition to the already hooked domestic aviators. Many Czech airfields now offer a good accommodation for aviation tourists, providing at the same time the technical base for the needs of their winged mounts The Czech Republic is a beautiful and friendly country, both for the landbound tourists and for those who would prefer the bird's eye perspective and free motion in the blue sky. It is as easy as just flying in and seeing for yourself

As in the automobilism also in the aviation many enthusiasts covet the veteran and vintage machines. Some restore them, often to a state better than the original series production veteran enjoyed when it left the production shops, some build the replicas true to the original that disappeared long ago, according to old blueprints and often with almost detective finding of information. Some of the replicas belong to the category of ultralight aircraft. In Czechia this activity is a domain not only of entusiastic individuals and volunteer groups, but also of small, highly specialised firms. All of them repair, restore or build from stratch their machines for their owners' personal pleasure as well as for education and enlightenment of the general public in matters of technical beauty. The vintage sailplane enthusiasts aggregate in the Czech POTC (Oldtimer gliding Club) and organize their own

aviation contests. The restorers, builders and pilots of historic powered airplanes meet the public at air shows organised from spring till autumn at many airfelds around Czechia and also at the historic aircraft fly-ins. Their dexterity and profound knowledge of their matter has been used to advantage several times by film-makers to build replicas, both flying and otherwise, for historic motion pictures. Thanks to effort of hundreds of these enthusiasts it is possible to see in the sky, besides the sleek and sometimes mundane all metal or all-composite "spam can", also the old and "hairy" classic aeroplanes built of wood and rag. They shine with a special beauty and despite their antique (or antiquated) looks most of them fly pretty well.

The air sports have a long tradition in Czechia - the first medals from international contests were won by Czechoslovak pilots already in the nineteen-twenties. Also now our pilots occupy a prominent position in many aviation disciplines. Our traditional specialty is the aerobatics, precision flying and navigation, gliding and parachutism. Lately we belong to the top in the ultralight flying, too, winning several titles of World and European Team Champions, while the paragliding pilots also bring brilliant results and the hang-gliding pilots placed very well in international contests.

At the Paragliding World Championships 2009 that took place early this year in Mexico, the Czech team, consisting of T. Brauner, D. Ohldal, M. Orlk and R. Kunov, won for the second time in a row the title of World Champions. No wonder the Czech sport aviators were for this year awarded the organizing of several World championships: Between 12th and 23rd August 2009 at the Jihlava airfield the 12th World Ultralight Flying Championships shall take place. Between 3rdJuly and 7th August 2009 at the Nov Msto nad Metuj airfield the World Powered Paragliding Championships shall be flown.
