Types of Multimedia Instructional Methodologies

Use graphics as a multimedia enhancement when the addition of color improves the teaching value, e.g., a wiring diagram to show the different colors of wire. Always give a title or description. Be aware that it may be more economical to put a few color graphics in the print-based CDC if that is the only multimedia element. Why choose Video? 1. When it presents a visual message that is clearer than text alone. 2. When it demonstrates a procedure, process, or role-playing technique that is not well presented with text. 3. We tend to be visual learners. Always give a title or description. Keep videos short. Instead of showing a long video all at once, split it up with text, audio, or questions in between. Make sure the video teaches something. Why choose the Forms category? 1. When a form is complicated or complex to learn. 2. When a form is often incorrectly completed in the field. Always give a title or description of an interactive form. "Interactive" means that students must complete all or parts of the form based on a sequence of events (such as a scenario). These "interactions" could take the form of fill-inthe blanks (preferably) or multiple choice. Definition of Animation: A picture or diagram that shows a process or procedure using movement and color. Some current animation technology choices are animated .gifs, DHTML, and Macromedia Flash. Always give a title or description. Provide a button to replay; don't let the animation run continuously. Definition of Games or Gaming Techniques: A procedure or strategy for gaining an end. It offers the appeal of motivation and entertainment. Examples are game-show formats, hangman games, drag and drop exercises, and puzzles where students complete against the computer, the clock, another student, or the student's past performance. Always give a title or description, and don't forget to give instructions on how to play the game. Definition of Simulation: A digitized approximation of real situations, tasks, or procedures. Imitates real life. At the highest level, simulations allow students to practice making decisions without having the equipment available because it's too expensive or too dangerous. For example, this might be used to teach manipulation of dangerous chemicals or the transporting of missiles or bombs. This type of instruction can be time-consuming and therefore costly to design and develop. Interactive simulations are the highest level of MM enhancements.
