For most of the 20th century, immigrants became ingrained into American life by learning their new countrys sports. John Halamas dad was no exception. Emigrating to Brooklyn from the Slovakia area of what was then Czechoslovakia, he arrived just in time to experience the Miracle Mets championship season in 69. He became a fan of his new countrys national pastime. Little did he know then, that his son, born two years and four months after the Mets triumph, would make a career out of baseball, growing up to pitch at the games highest level. John Halama was selected by the Houston Astros out of St. Francis (Brooklyn) College in the 23rd round of the 1994 draft. He signed with the Astros and has been pitching professionally ever since. Halama, who turned 40 in February, will be the Lancaster Barnstormers starter on Thursday when they open the 2012 season against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in Waldorf, Md. He feels lucky to still be doing what he loves. To be playing the game that has taken him so many places. Im having a blast, Halama said. Im going to have fun, so lets have fun as a team. I give you a hard time. You give me a hard time. Have fun as a team and well win and winning makes for a better locker room. Halama began his career in short short-season Class A ball in Auburn, N.Y. My neck of the woods in New York (Brooklyn) and that neck of the woods in New York, its night and day, he said. When youre a city kid and youre going to the country, its kind of culture shock. Theres a running joke in New York,
if youre not from the five boroughs, youre not from New York. But he adapted. He had to. So far, in his pro career, hes pitched at 18 different stops in the U.S. and the total is more than 25 if you count his time in Asia, winter ball in the Caribbean and all the spring training sites. Work is work, he said. I can pitch anywhere. Ive just always put my head down and made the best of it wherever I am. Halama made his way through the Houston system and, at the end of spring training in 1998, he was told he had made the team. My body almost shut down from just being excited, he said. But he was mindful of his roommates feelings because he was headed back to Triple-A. So he left the hotel to share the news with his biggest fans. I got in my car and drove off and hit a pay phone up and called my parents, he said. They were ecstatic, beyond ecstatic. They said, The hard work has paid off. Everything youve ever dreamed of wanting to do has finally happened. His first two major league starts, both against the Giants, did not go well. His third start, which came against the Dodgers, was much better. A lot of the guys told me not to look at the back of the jerseys, he said. Just go out there and look at (catcher Brad) Ausmus. Dont worry about Barry Bonds and (Jeff) Kent, because when you start looking at that, youre in awe. Its a philosophy hes used to this day. If you go out there and make the pitches youre supposed to make, youre going to get guys out, he said. There are better hitters in the major leagues and they might get you sometimes. But you cant control what the hitter does. If you continue to make pitches, youre going to get guys out, no matter what league youre in. Its like an off day when youre catching him, said

Lancaster hitting coach Lance Burkhart, who was Halamas catcher when both played at Southern Maryland in 2009. Hes going to hit his spots because hes going to keep the ball down. There arent going to be too many runners and they probably wont try and steal because he has such a good move. After six starts in Houston,
Halama was 1-1 with a 5.85 ERA and he was sent down to TripleA. That offseason, he was sent to Seattle to complete the Ran-

To be a catcher you have to be part psychologist. You have to know the opposing teams batters, their strengths and weaknesses. You need to be aware of the ballparks quirks and dimensions. But most importantly, you have to know your pitching staff. What are their best pitches? What do they like to throw in a particular count? What is and isnt working for them that day?
Then you have to coax, cajole and sometimes demand their best effort. Juggling all those duties is something Lancaster Barnstormers starting catcher Emerson Local Frostad video does very well. The staff loves him because he knows how to work with those guys and they trust him, said Lance Burkhart, the Barn-
stormers hitting coach and a former catcher himself. To be able to handle the different personalities who are on the mound and how theyre going to react, that takes time and experience and he has that. Ross Peeples, a member of the Stormers staff, agrees. You always want to get on the same page as your catcher, the left-hander said. He (Frostad) takes pride in knowing what you want to throw so you get into a good rhythm. The game goes faster, the defense plays better. Everyone benefits.
Emerson Frostad represented his native Canada in the Olympics and Pan-Am games.
Frostad wasnt always a good catcher. In fact, he wasnt always a catcher. He played shortstop and third base in high school and mostly third base in college. It wasnt until 2006, his third season in pro ball, that he went behind the plate. My first year, I was brutal and it took me a while to learn all the different aspects of catching, Frostad said. Theres so much that goes into it working with the pitchers and blocking (pitches in the dirt) and throwing. It took me a good year and a half to feel comfortable back there. It was a long transition. But (now), Im totally comfortable back there and its my favorite position. In junior high, Frostad had to make a choice. Born in Vancouver and growing up in near Calgary he, like most Canadian kids, played hockey. But Frostad also played baseball and he was good at it. I liked them both . It was perfect because they were opposite seasons. But once you get older, you try to specialize a little more. Frostad played for a Calgary travel baseball team, which

competed in tournaments in the northwestern states and Arizona. Once I got that exposure, I realized I could maybe go to college or maybe beyond in baseball, he said. Exposure from those tournaments resulted in being recruited and he received a scholarship from Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. At Lewis-Clark, he played for legendary coach Ed Cheff, whose teams won 16 NAIA World Series titles. His biggest thing he passed along to me was just working hard, Frostad said. Guys have physical tools but dont always play the best. Just getting the most out of yourself and having that mentality to go out there and win and play hard every day. That was a huge learning experience for me in college. Once you get to pro ball, and even once you move up the ladder to Double-A and Triple-A, everybody on the field is talented. Theres nobody that makes it that far if he doesnt have talent. So the thing that separates you to get you to that next level, or to the big leagues, or whatever, is that mentality and work

Hobsons managing stretches from f ield to f inding top talent for Barnstormers
BY BURT WILSON
Sports Staff
utch Hobson has done it again. Last season, his first as Lancaster Barnstormers manager, Hobson assembled what was essentially an all-star squad. The Stormers raced out to a huge lead, playing .710 baseball, going 22-9 in their first 31 games. Then Lancaster held on, as the roster was seriously depleted in a very short timespan when players departed to sign affiliated deals. The team won the first half, which earned it a spot in the postseason. Now, on the verge of the 2012 season, it appears the Barnstormers are once again stacked with talent. Im confident we will compete with anybody, Hobson said of the Barnstormers, which will open the season tonight at Southern Maryland. How does Hobson attract talent to his team, year after year signing the best players? Because he cares about you first, hitting coach Lance Burkhart said. His main goal is to help further a guys career and get him back to affiliated ball. They want to play here not just because this is a good place to play but because they want to play for Butch. He has that kind of respect. He knows you have a life outside of baseball, first baseman Tommy Everidge said. Family comes first and if you have something going on, he understands that and lets you deal with it. And when it comes to the baseball side of things, he trusts you to do your work. He knows these are veteran players. This isnt (Class) A or Rookie ball. Hes not going to treat us like kids. Hes not going to make some stupid rule for no reason, like no music in the clubhouse, just to show he has control. Last season nine players from the Barnstormers left to sign with major league organizations, 11 if spring training is included. Of those players, five have returned to play for Hobson at the beginning of this season And thats not counting Everidge, last seasons Atlantic League MVP, and starting pitchers John Halama and J.D. Durbin. So things look (red) rosy once again for the Stormers. Starting Rotation including six wins for the Phillies in 2007. Marty Janzen never dreamed he would get a contract to play pro baseball. Janzen never thought he would make it to the major leagues. And he certainly didnt think he would make a career out of the game. He was wrong on all three counts. Janzen, in his second year as the Lancaster Barnstormers pitching coach, is beginning his 18th season in pro ball. I never really thought much of my talent, Janzen said. I played a lot of Little League early on but I didnt stand out. I never really thought I was anything special. After high school, he went to an open tryout for a junior college program, but he didnt make it. A friend suggested he try and make the American Legion team. He was chosen for the team and luckily we made it states, Janzen said. I started building my arm strength and I got noticed in the

state tournament. I went and tried out at the Yankees complex and that was thats what started it. The Yankees wanted to sign him and the Marlins were also interested. It was actually Roger Maris son, he was the legion coach who convinced me to sign with the Yankees, Janzen said. Janzen felt lucky to have a job in baseball. It was kind of a whirlwind for me, he said. All of a sudden, Im a pro baseball player. But I was just glad to have a uniform on. I was the first guy on the field and I just worked at it. While working his way through the Yankees system, he had a lot of future stars with him in the organization. When I went to the instructional league I had Andy Pettitte as my roommate so I learned some things from him and Mariano Rivera was down there, too, Janzen said. In 1995, he made three starts at the Double-A level with the Yankees before they dealt him to Toronto. Janzen was one of three players traded to the Blue Jays for David Cone. I just went about my business and one day they called me into the office and said that I got traded, he said. I had no idea that was going to happen. In May of the following year he got another call, this time telling him he was going to the big leagues. I was just shocked, he said. He made his major league debut May 12, 1996 against the Boston Red Sox and his idol, Roger Clemens. He entered the game at the beginning of the eighth inning with the Blue Jays trailing, 7-3. They brought me in and it was nerve-racking, he said. Youre floating on a cloud when you go out there. The game was played in Toronto at what was then called the Skydome, which at the time had a hotel with rooms that looked out over the field. During Janzens debut, a

couple in one of the rooms with curtains open visible from the stadium were engaged in things they should not have been, given the public setting. It was up on the Jumbotron, Janzen said. Here I am, a nervous wreck and thats going on. You laughed. You tried not to look up there. But it broke the ice and made things a little easier. Janzen pitched three scoreless innings and the Blue Jays rallied to win the game in the 10th, giving the 6-foot-3, 197-pound right-hander his first victory in the majors. But the happy moment was also bittersweet because Janzens dad passed away six months before he reached the bigs. I always did things for him, to show him I could do it, Janzen said, and then he wasnt there. Janzen also got wins in his next two appearances, one in relief, one as a starter. In all, he was 4-6 with a 7.33 ERA in 15 games (11 of them starts) for the Jays that season. The next season (1997), he was 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 12 relief appearances for the Jays. It was his last year in the majors. To go from where I was

(signing as an undrafted free agent), that was unbelievable, he said. I was appreciative of the opportunity. I never thought in a million years Id make it to the big leagues. He pitched until 2005, including all or part of seven more seasons at the TripleA level. In addition to the Jays, he went back to the Yankees and also pitched in the Reds, Diamondbacks and Angels systems. He had surgery on his elbow in 2002, something he said he should have taken care of five years earlier. He pitched for Stormers skipper Butch Hobson in four different stints when Hobson managed the Nashua Pride. And then, after 2005, he was out of the game, leaving to pursue a more stable life. Once you get a little bit older youve got to make that decision, he said. Do you want to keep bouncing around, traveling around or do you want to move on to something thats a little more secure. He became a mortgage broker and thought he would never be involved with baseball again. I retired early because I didnt want
to have to worry about my health, he said. I was tired of the grind and I wanted to use what minimal brain power I had to do something else. He also wanted to get away from the politics of baseball. Everybody has a story, he said. If a team has more invested in someone else, theyre going to stick with them longer than you. Its about the money. And I just didnt want to end up being bitter about that. But after three years out of the game, Hobson asked Janzen to be his pitching coach in Southern Maryland and theyve been together ever since. Martys a very smart man and he knows pitching, Hobson said. Hes the first guy I called when my (previous) pitching coach retired. Martys got a very good eye for watching a guys (pitching) mechanics, hitting coach Lance Burkhart said. He can look at them and see why theyre struggling. He can tell them if theyre tipping their pitches. And he does it in a way they accept because they respect his knowledge of the game. Hobson believes Janzen will someday coach in affiliated ball. Ive talked to some organizations

and I think hes going to get job because hes that good, Hobson said. He has a good rapport with pitchers and once they hear him talk about pitching, hes won them over. Janzen said another job is the furthest thing from my mind at this point. As long as Butch is the manager and wants me as the pitching coach, Im happy. One thing that is front and center with Janzen these days is impending fa-
therhood. He and his girlfriend Mandy are expecting their first child, a boy, due in August. Im excited, he said. Its going to be different. But Im ready, looking forward to it. Its a good time in my life. I couldnt have done this when I was younger. I was too selfish and I was moving all around when I was pitching. Now Im happy, things are stable. And because of Janzen, the Barnstormers pitching staff is also stable.
