1. 1. Ceneial Remaiks.
Telipinu, a Hittite deity of Hattic oiigin, is much bettei known fiom a naiiation
poitiayinghimasadisappeaiinggod,thanfiompeisonalpiayeisaddiessedtohim.
ThemythofTelipinu(CTH324)isattestedinthieemainveisionsandmoiethan
tencopies,whilethepiayeiofTelipinumadeonbehalfofMuisiliII(CTH377)is
knownonlyfiom thieecopies.Theonlyotheipotentialpiayeito Telipinuknown
tousisthefiagmentKUB36.45//KUB58.48(CTH627,KI.IAM)containingthe
entieatiestoTelipinuembeddedinaiitual.
The pieseived pait of CTH 377 can be divided into thiee main sections. The
beginning of the piayei contains a foimulaic evocation (mugaai ; I 1-17) and
hymn(alliatai ;I18-II22)addiessedtoTelipinu,whichstiesshisintimatecon-
nectionwithatti-land.Afteialacunaofsometenlines,anolessfoimulaicsetof
entieaties to the deity aimingat secuiing his positive involvement in the affaiis of
the land of atti, concludes the piayei (aikuai ; III x+1 - IV 18). As usual, the
entieaties aie dealing with thiee main issues, the physical and spiiitual health of
thekingandhissub|ects,thesub|ugationofenemies,andthepiospeiityoftheland.
OnedoesnotnecessaiilyneedtointeipietthistiiadinDumezilianteimsbecause
it tianscends the Indo-Euiopean cultuial aiea, and peihaps iepiesents a pan-
cultuial concept. When King David oiganized a census in Isiael and Judea, the
Hebiew Cod offeied him a choice of seven yeais of famine, thiee months of mil-
itaiy defeats, oi thiee days of pestilence as a punishment foi this act of hybiis (2

We can only guessabout the content of the missing pait of the text, but com-
plaintsaboutscouigesthatbefellthelandofattiandattemptsatself-|ustification
aie among the possible topics that can be suggested on the basis of the othei
piayeis.Themainpaitofthepieseivedtext,howevei,doesnotbeaianytiacesof
peisonal involvement on the pait of the king. It is only fiom the pieamble to the
piayeithatwegetinfoimationabouttheioyalcommissiontoieciteitdailyinfiont
of the deity, and leain that Telipinu was one of the peisonal deities of MuisiliII
andhisfamily.
Thetextthat hasthegieatestnumbeiofsimilaiitieswithouis isthepiayeiof
MuisiliIItotheSun-goddessofAiinna(CTH376

),whichalsobeginswithahymn
andendswithfoimulaicentieaties.Theinitialpaitsofthehymnsaiealmostiden-
tical in both cases, and the final invocations also exhibit stiiking paiallelism. The
hymn to the Sun-goddess is, howevei, much longei. Even if we assume that the
hymn to Telipinu continued thioughout the lacuna, it will not match its moie fa-
mouscounteipait.Suchassumptionis,inanyevent,unlikely,sinceaccoidingtothe
|ustobseivationofCteibock(JAOS78[1958j:247)themiddlepaitofthehymn
to the Sun-goddess of Aiinna iepeats almost veibatim the Hittite Hymn to the
Sun-godofMesopotamianinspiiation(belongingtoCTH372).Thetiansfeiofep-
ithets fiom the Babylonian Sun-god to the Sun-goddess of Hattic oiigin, who, in
addition, had the same name Istanu- in Hittite, is quite natuial, but one would
haidly expect a similai tiansfei in the case of Telipinu. In all piobability, the
alliataiofCTH376wascompiledoftwoheteiogeneoussouices:hymntoadis-
appeaiing deity, and hymn to a solai deity. Only the fiist souice is ieflected in
CTH377.
Thefoimulaicchaiacteiofouipiayeisomewhatcomplicatesitsdating.Theie
isnodiiectindicationinthetextthatthecommissioneiofCTH377wasMuisili
II,iatheithanhisgiandson,MuisiliIII.The13
th
centuiyductusofKUB24.1and
24.2(cf.below)isalsocompatiblewithbothoptions.Seveialfacts,howevei,speak
in favoi of the fiist hypothesis. Fiist of all is the above-mentioned similaiity with
CTH376,apiayeithatdwellsonthetopicoftheplagueand,theiefoie,canbecei-
tainly attiibuted to Muisili II. Second, the piayei to Telipinu makes a iecuiient
iefeiencetothequeenandthepiinces.SinceMuisiliIIIwasdethionedatayoung
age by his uncle attusili III, we may doubt that he had an official piincipal wife
duiinghisshoitieign.ItishisstepmotheiTanuepa,whosenameappeaisnextto
hisnameonioyalseals(Biyce,KgHitt

Should oui conclusions be coiiect, two deities, Telipinu and the Sun-goddess
ofAiinna,en|oyedthestatusofpeisonalgods(DINCIRSAC.DU)ofMuisili
II and his immediate family. Of the two deities, the Sun-goddess appeais to have
en|oyedmoieattentiononthepaitoftheking,sinceMuisiliII`sdevotiontoheiis
foiegiounded in his Annals. The situation is fuithei complicated by the fact that
MuisiliisdesignatedasbelovedofthePoweifulStoim-Codintwoindependent
souices(Singei,Muw.Pi.:153withfn.338).Appaiently,MuisiliIIwasiatheipio-
miscuousinhisielationshipswithdivinepations,anddidnotshyawayfiomchang-
inghisdeclaiedallegianceastheoccasioniequiied.
ThementionofthequeenandpiincesinouitextledO.Caiiuba(StMed4:12)
tothinkthatitsdateissomewhatlateithanthatofCTH376,wheiethefoimulaic
blessingsaieconfinedtothekingandthelandofatti.Thisaigument,howevei,is
ielevant only foi the final edition of both piayeis, since it is possible to show that
both CTH 376 and CTH 377 aie based on compositions of the Middle Hittite
Peiiod. The Middle Sciipt paiallel veision KUB 24.4 + KUB 30.12, eiioneously
assigned as 376.C in CTH, iepiesents in fact a diiect piototype of Muisili II`s
piayeitotheSun-goddessofAiinna.Inaddition,bothCTH376andCTH377dis-
play a numbei of linguistic aichaisms that cannot be accounted foi fiom within
Neo-Hittite(seeouicommentsonCTH377belowandO.Caiiuba,ZDMCSuppl.
1[1969j:240foiCTH376).

ThepaleogiaphicanalysisofKUB24.1andKUB24.2wasundeitakenbyCh.
Rstei in StBoT 21. The ductus of both texts indicates that they weie wiitten no
eailiei than the 13

centuiy. At the same time, it is easy to obseive that the sign
shapes of KUB 24.1 aie moie consistently cuisive, wheieas KUB 24.2 contains
moie aichaic sign vaiiants (cf. especially SAC, IK, AI, II, A). The foim of the
QAsignattestedinKUB24.1usuallyoccuisinthetextswiittenduiingtheieignof
attusili III oi latei, even though theie is one exception (see Neu, StBoT 32: 3).
Paleogiaphic consideiations alone do not allow us to make a conclusion, as to
whetheiKUB24.2needstobeassignedtoaneailieidate,oiwassimplywiittenby
amoieaichaizingsciibe,sooneneedstotuintolinguisticdata.
The oithogiaphic and linguistic disciepancies between KUB 24.1 and KUB
24.2weieanalyzedbyCaiiuba,CSPintoie13,aswellasinStBoT21.Themateiial
that is potentially ielevant foi compaiative dating can be summaiized in the table

aie non-paiallel and we don`t know what we might find in the coiiesponding

In conclusion, KUB 24.1 appeais to have been wiitten at least seveial decades
latei than KUB 24.2, even though one cannot positively claim that the lattei is the
piotogiaph of the foimei.
As foi the geneial outlook of the tablets, one can see that the sciibe of Ex. B
was not veiy pioficient at his ait: the lines on both the obveise and the ieveise of
his tablet aie not hoiizontal and theii beginnings slide down little by little. As foi
the colophon, the sciibe did not manage to fit it on the tablet at all. Ex. A, in its
tuin, has a gieat numbei of eiasuies.
The fiist attempt to edit CTH 376 and 377 in tiansliteiation belongs to O.R.
Cuiney (AAA 27 [1940j), who deemed the piayeis to Telipinu and the Sun-
goddess of Aiinna to be almost identical and thus not woithy of being tieated sep-
aiately. Aftei H. Cteibock succeeded in showing the opposite (see above), the
need foi a sepaiate edition of CTH 377 became appaient. In 1971, Muisili II`s
piayei to Telipinu was ie-edited in Iebiun, Piieies: 180-191. Unfoitunately, this
publication can be iegaided only as a pieliminaiy one, in view of seveial eiiois and
omissions both in tiansliteiation and tianslation. The issues discussed in the com-
mentaiy to the piesent edition weie, almost without exception, ignoied by Iebiun,
and theii sheei numbei piovides an ample |ustification foi the piesent woik.
In addition to full editions, one must mention the English tianslation of the
piayei published in Singei, Piayeis (WAW 11): 54-56. Fai fiom being a com-
pilation of eailiei editions, Singei`s tianslation tacitly incoipoiates seveial oiiginal
