Discussion Points (4): Building Organizational Relationships is a collective endeavor.

In the case study If Enough People Care the key aspects to organizational development were planning, fundamentals, goals, attitude, involvement, teamwork, self-image, loyalty, and standards. Additionally, Lou Holtz emphasizes that effective organizational relationships are based in trust commitment and caring. Management usually directs and incorporates these aspects into organizational relationships. Five major points that relate to this are total quality management (TQM), quality performance (QP), direct controls (DC), alliance management (AM), and integrative techniues (Luthans 351). Total quality management is an organizational strategy and accompanying techniques that result in delivery of high-quality products or services to customers. This is related to the video case because it takes planning, goals, involvement, and teamwork in order to accomplish TQM. This would also fall under product development (Luthans 368). The text cites that IBM followed a TQM approach on its AS/400 computer systems and resulted in one of the most successful product launches in its company history. In addition it uses empowerment which particularly emphasizes one of the aspects of effective organizational relationships, which is trust (Luthans 368). Quality Performance is another key point because of the4 use of quality control circles (QCC). Quality Control Circles emphasize teamwork, involvement, goals, and planning. Also QCC emphasizes trust and commitment. An example cited in the text was that of Japanese goods superior quality. The Japanese were found to be more careful in handling parts, finished products, etc. Additionally Japanese minimized worker error by assigning new employees to existing teams or pairing them with supervisors (Luthans 371).

Direct Controls(DCs) involve the use of face-to-face or personal meetings to monitor operations. The relation to the video case is that in the meetings problems are discussed, goals set, evaluations made, and actions taken that will help improve organizational effectiveness. Direct Controls involve planning, goals, involvement, teamwork, and standards. An example in the text is how International Telephone and Telegraph holds monthly management meetings at its headquarters; the meetings are held by the CEO and reports are submitted by each unit manager throughout the world (Luthans 374). Alliance management is important because of the collective action through international strategic alliances (ISAs) (Luthans 352). This is important because through involvement and teamwork with local companies in order to gain local knowledge and easily penetrate the foreign market. Goals and Self-Image are also important as locally operated companies are viewed favorably compared to international chains. A case that made use of ISAs was that of Motorola and Nanjing Panda Electronics which allowed the Motorola Power PC chip to be used in the Nanjing PCs (Luthans 348). Integrative Techniques (ITs) are important because they help the overseas operation become part of the host countrys infrastructure. Integrative techniques involve the development of good relations with the host government and other local political groups, local product production, creating joint ventures and hiring local people to manage and run the operation, local R&D, and developing effective labor-management relations. ITs are implemented through the use of planning, goals , involvement, and teamwork.
