- Definite Articles
o Precede nouns that are used in a very specific sense La voiture quelle conduit est rouge. o Precede nouns that are used in a general sense. Lessence cote trop cher. o Are used before abstract nouns. La patience est trs utile pendant les heures de pointe. o Are used before the names of seasons. Je pense que le printemps est la meilleure saison. o Are used for the days of the week to indicate a habitual action. Je visite ma grand-mre le mercredi aprs-midi. o Are used before names that denote nationality, before the names of countries, geographic regions and names of famous buildings or monuments. - Indefinite Articles

o Are used before names of indeterminate people and things. Il y a un parc aprs la prochaine rue. o When the verb is negative, the indefinite article is replaced with de. Tu nas pas de chance. BUT if tre is negative, the indefinite article is not changed to de Je ne suis pas une laide fille. o The plural indefinite article des has almost the same meaning as the partitive article des they both can be translated to some. Il y a des pommes dans la voiture.

- Partitive Articles
o Indicate a part of something, an unspecified amount/quantity. Il me faut de largent pour acheter une voiture. o When the verb is negative, the partitive article changes to de. Tu nas pas de pommes? o When a plural adjective precedes the noun, des becomes de. Les sorcires se dplacent avec de petits balais.

- Articles with expressions of quantity


o Following expressions of quantity: Beaucoup Trop Peu Assez Autant Plus Moins Un verre o Du, de la, de l and des change to de Il y a plus beaucoup de pommes dans mon sac. Une bouteille Un litre Un kilo Etc.

o Note: The change does not occur with: la plupart; bien; encore o When a noun used in a general sense follows the expression avoir besoin de, definite articles are not used. Jai besoin dargent pour acheter une pomme. o If the noun is more specific, use definite articles. Malheureusement, ma mere a besoin de largent que mon pre sa promis pour acheter un poulet. Alors, je ne mangerai pas une pomme.
