Sustainability factors are determined less by the access to financial capital and more by the commitment to preserve and augment social and ecological capital. A new measure has been crafted for determining a companys success Triple Bottom Line People, Profit and Planet. The 3BL concept thus determines sustainability.

Automobile Sector
I.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited


Maruti started a green manufacturing program 2 years back. Under this program the

company identified five areas in manufacturing to focus on environment and optimal utilization. Using the raw material wisely and weight reduction of all the components, was one of initiatives by MSIL and was termed as Green Manufacturing. The initiative consisted of reducing or reusing the usage of major raw materials such as Steel coils, ferrous and non ferrous castings, paints and thinners. The one-gram-one-component weight reduction program has also been launched by MSIL. This initiative helps in lesser requirement of raw material, ultimately benefitting the environment. The program is also beneficial from the point of view of running pollution caused by vehicles. Due to weight reduction in cars, the pollution created by running of cars is also reduced. Maruti has also adopted the policy of Green Supply Chain through which the company aspires to create a sustainable value chain for its business partners. India houses roughly . Number of Auto Ancillary pollution. MSIL sensitizes manufacturers and are responsible for its suppliers about environmental issues and encourages

them to take proactive measures to minimize their environmental impacts. Through the green supply chain initiative, the company encourages its vendors to shift their manufacturing facilities near their plants in Gurgaon & Manesar. Currently, MSIL procures 86% of supplies (value) from vendors located in a radius of 100 Kms from its manufacturing plants. This not only helps reducing the logistics cost and the subsequent impact on environment but also ensures lesser material damages and wastages ultimately helping the environment. This has also helped company in implementing JIT techniques and usage of bin boxes. Company has successfully made its vendors avoid usage of cardboard boxes and polythene. This has resulted in paper / cardboard savings of 44T per year atleast.

Tata Motors

True to the tradition of the Tata Group, Tata Motors plays an active role in community development, serving rural communities adjacent to its manufacturing locations. Tata Motors believes in technology for tomorrow. Its products stand testimony to this. Its annual expenditure on R&D is approximately 2% of our turnover. It ensures that their products are environmentally sound in a variety of ways. These include reducing hazardous materials in vehicle components, developing extended life lubricants, fluids and using ozone-friendly refrigerants. Tata Motors has been making conscious efforts in the implementation of several environmentally sensitive technologies in manufacturing processes. Tata Motors' concern is manifested by a dual approach 1. Reduction of environmental pollution and regular pollution control drives 2. Restoration of ecological balance

Cleaner Technology - Going Green:


Tata Motors has been at the forefront of the Indian automobile industry's anti-pollution efforts by introducing cleaner engines. It is the first Indian Company to introduce vehicles with Euro norms well ahead of the mandated dates. Tata Motors' joint venture with Cummins Engine Company, USA, in 1992, was a pioneering effort to introduce emission control technology for India. Over the years, Tata Motors has also made investments in setting up of an advanced emission-testing laboratory.

Society First
Driver Training Programmes: Tata Motors leads a number of driver training programmes across the nation with a view of ensuring safety of all its passengers. Mass Transportation: Tata Motors has always been a supporter of mass transportation by modes such as buses and trains, leading to considerably lower pollution levels and decongestion of Indian roads as compared to private modes of transportation. Community Development: In addition to all above mentioned activities, Tata Motors takes initiatives to contribute to the society in other areas like health and education. Along with conducting training programmes for drivers, Tata Motors also organizes health camps for them. Tata Motors goes a step further by reaching out to these drivers' families by educating their children.

L'Oral
Cosmetic companies are growing aggressively today and even have a lot of potential

growth in the future. Companies like L'Oral have mission to put consumer at heart and sustainable development at the core of their activities, which helps in safe-guarding the environment. Every year L'Oral introduces new raw materials into its portfolio for enhanced product quality and performance. They aim to enhance the use of renewable, low impact raw materials in its products. This has resulted in 40% use of material in its portfolio from plant origin and 26% adhering to green chemistry principles. This initiative in some cases has helped in sourcing of plant based raw materials instead of the ones made in laboratories.

II. Hindustan Unilever Limited


A perfect example of the Triple Bottom line has been demonstrated by Hindustan Unilever Ltd through its initiative of SHAKTI program. The company has utilized the strength of People to educate the rural population regarding safe-guarding the Planet and is creating the brand awareness amongst the rural Junta (which churns Profits). Shakti is HULs initiative that combines social responsibility, sustainability, and business strategy. These factory-centered activities mainly focus on training farmers, animal husbandry, generating alternative income, health & hygiene and infrastructure development. HUL has collaborated with Self Help Group (SHG) by offering them opportunites for business. Shakti already has about 25,000 women entrepreneurs in its fold. A typical Shakti entrepreneur earns a sustainable income of about Rs.700 - Rs.1,000 per month. Since most of them live below the poverty line, this earning is significant, often doubling the household income. Shakti is thus creating opportunities for rural women to live in improved conditions and with dignity, while improving the overall standard of living in their families. Shakti Vani is a social communication programme. Women, trained in health and hygiene issues, address village communities through meetings at schools, village baithaks, SHG meetings and other social forums.

Information Technology Services Sector

I. Wipro
Wipros, Applying thoughts is a social initiative that arose out of concern for

school education in India. Objective of this program is to aid schools in imparting good education and advocate for a systematic trend towards schools that address these concerns. It aims at The school education system has to continuously respond to changing needs of society. Schools should become spaces that not only develop the students individual capabilities but also further the idea of democracy and sensitivity to social and ecological responsibilities Wipro aimed at building eco-system of the school students right from their school days. Affective education deals with issues of attitude, motivation and values. It brings in issues like sensitivity, safety, diversity, feelings and senses into the classroom and the school environment.

II. HCL
HCL has launched its Green Bag Campaign keeping to help environment by keeping the air clean, water fresh and soil fertile. HCL has taken the initiative of disposing e-waste for free. Normally if a person wants to dispose e-waste legally, it costs a person heavily. E-waste mainly consist of non-working CDs, earphones, mobile-phones, DVDs, cassette-players of 90s, powerguzzling CRT monitors of yester-year. E-waste when disposed in the scrap is burnt out in open air, resulting in the overall degradation of environment; and releasing of harmful fumes in the surrounding air. Under the HCL World Environment Week, this e-waste is disposed off at an authorized e-waste recycler. A person just needs to deposit the e-waste available with him in a HCL store. This not only helps HCL to make the population aware about the e-waste but goes one step further in helping them to dispose the e-waste. This also makes one walk through the stores of HCL, where they can have a sneak peak at the latest HCL products available in market.
