EXERCISE 3: TRANSFORMATION

BASE YEAR CHARCOAL PRODUCTION Charcoal is produced from firewood. Charcoal is made with traditional earth mounds. Conversion efficiency of traditional earth mounds is 20%. ENERGY GENERATION Power plants: Hydro: 1,000 MW Coal steam: 2,500 MW Oil Combustion Turbine: 2,000 MW Total generation in 2000: 16,200 GWhr; 34% hydro, 44% coal steam, rest from oil combustion turbine. OIL REFINING Base Year Production: 4 million tonnes of crude oil. Production capacity: 6 million tonnes of crude oil. Refinery efficiency: 97.0%. Refinery output: Gasoline, Aviation gas, Kerosene/jet fuel, diesel, residual/fuel oil, LPG and lubricants. COAL MINING Base year production: 4.7 million tonnes of coal. Mining capacity: 6 million tonnes of coal. Coal mining efficiency: 80%

REFERENCE SCENARIO CHAROCAL PRODUCTION Brick Beehive kilns imported from Thailand. Thailand kilns have a conversion efficiency of 47%. Share of charcoal production of Thailand kilns to be 5% by 2010 and 20% by 2030. COAL MINING Coal mining capacity increases to 10 million tonnes by 2000, 14 million tonnes by 2010 and 23 million tonnes by 2030.
