Ballet I- Spring 2012 Concert Critique

Instructor: Rachel Brown


DUE: Dance Collage: March 8/ Dance Works: April 19-IN CLASS. NO EXCEPTIONS.

~You must see EITHER MSUs Dance Collage February 29 @ 7:30, March 1, 2 @ 7:30 pm, March 2 @ 1pm, March 3 @ 8pm, March 4 @ 2 pm OR Dance Works April 11, 12, 13 @ 7:30, April 13 @ 1pm, April 14 @ 2pm and 8 pm. Write your name on both your ticket and the program and submit both, along with paper. ~COST: FREE with ID card ~This paper is to be at least 2 pages, double spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font. ~You must pick ONE piece to discuss in your paper! The paper should be a cohesive essay with a beginning, middle, and end (intro, support, and conclusion). Spell check and take time to make sure you have said what you wanted to say. Be creative. Think outside the box. And remember there are no wrong answers or thoughts. This is an opinion paper. *DONT FORGET INTRO including all pertinent info: NAME of piece, choreographer, name of show, date of show, etc. Pretend you reader has not seen this show!
I. Discuss the choreography: (Remember to tell me what piece you are talking about ) A. Theatrical Purpose of choreographers intent 1. Did the movement tell a story? 2. Did the movement express or interpret an idea or feeling? 3. Did the movement convey a message? 4. Did it overwhelm the audience through spectacle? 5. Was the movement there just for movement sake? Did it develop a movement idea (i.e. body part study) B. Give a brief description of choreography 1. basic elements 2. style of movement 3. technical difficulty or complexity 4. number of dancers (a close enough estimate if your not sure) 5. strengths and weakness of choreography 6. how did the music enhance or detract from the movement 7. was the movement abstract or did it tell a story (narrative/dramatic) C. Did you like the choreography? Why or why not? II. III. Discuss a memorable moment! Be specific. Discuss the performance of the dancers 1. Technique- execution of choreography 2. performance skills 3. Ensemble work/or outstanding performers 4. Quality (Was it short and sharp? Was is smooth and fluid? Was it athletic? Was it graceful?) Discuss technical aspects 1. Costumes 2. Lighting 3. Sets 4. Props

V. Give an overall description and evaluation of the show and company 1. Choreography 2. Dancing 3. Anything else you feel is important to mention. Dont panic and do your best. You DONT have to write in the same order as the outline but you must include all of the required information in the outline!
