Nathan McCall Ms. Caruso English 1103 Monday, February 15, 2012 The Inca Indians of the Andes The Incan empire was founded in the 1400s by a man named Manco Capac. The Inca conquered the nearby city of Cusco, which later became the capitol city and from there grew to immense numbers by the 1500s. Most believe that the population was between 6-12 million people and their empire covered 3,000 square kilometers. They were fierce and skilled warriors, as well as master craftsman, and knowledgeable farmers. But their tactics of acquiring new citizens would ultimately prove to be their downfall. The Incan civil war broke out in the mid1520s, and it would leave their state at a point of weakness, vulnerable to be overtaken when the Spanish arrived in the 1530s. Pre-Incan cultures in the Andes area go back from 18-32,000 years ago and relied heavily on agriculture and fishing. The Inca Empire didnt start forming until the 1430s when Manco Capac and his people conquered the city of Cusco and declared himself the supreme ruler of the Indians, which is where the term Inca came from. Manco Capac was from the Lake Titicaca area in the Andes Mountains in modern day Peru. The city of Cusco later became the Inca capitol city and the center of their Empire. I like it so far.
