During that decade, which would later be called the naughty nineties, the city was home to more than 40,000 prostitutes, countless brothels, gambling dens and all-night dives. There also were criminal rings and thugs of every type imaginable. Although Roosevelt admitted he knew nothing about police management, the 36year-old future president became police commissioner in 1895 and made cleaning up the city his top priority. Roosevelt immediately locked horns with the corrupted powers at Tammany Hall. He began making midnight rambles with muckraker Jacob Rils so that they could observe firsthand the lewd realities that seemed to lurk on almost every corner. As Roosevelt tried to persuade two million New Yorkers that wholesome family fun was more enjoyable than the sinful alternatives, he quickly learned that the citizens of the city loved sin more than salvation. Author Richard Zacks has written a witty, richly detailed account of one of Americas most colorful politicians and his attempt to clean up the seedy underbelly of New York City. If this story had a moral it would be a simple one, namely never try to take a beer away from a New Yorker.

This is Why You Shouldnt Paint Your Stucco!
By the law of physics, the only way to enhance/strengthen stucco is to fortify when mixing. Once cured the stucco is as strong as it can get. Painting traditional cement color coat(s) will eventually trap moisture. All stucco systems, regardless of finish coating, will crack. A residential stucco system typically has a concrete base over a block or framed structure. The stucco system endures constant structural and ground movement, which causes cracking. No finish coating, concrete or elastomeric can completely endure this movement. Elastomeric products are designed to allow elasticity, least likely to crack. However, if the wall faults past its elasticity, it will tear, allowing moisture behind it. Also, elastomeric is moisture resistant. Not Water Proof! Therefore, with a heavy concentration of moisture, it will penetrate the paint/coating. Elastomeric was originally designed for application over a new base coat. Traditional cement color coats are designed to absorb moisture through its layer(s) to the base coats. Hence the need to evaporate quickly. When paint/elastomeric are applied directly over cement color coat(s) and moisture gets behind it (which inevitably will happen), this causes the moisture to be trapped between the paint/elastomeric and the base coat. During freeze and thaw cycles the underlying cement color coat(s) and original base coats freeze, causing delamination. This compromises the entire existing stucco system! Once compromised, the only sure remedy is to relath with a new base coat to eliminate the risk of the paint/elastomeric. A relath with a new base is typically double the cost of a regular restucco! Call me for a comprehensive estimate. My focus is to preserve your existing stucco system.

A: Elsie was introduced during the 1930s as a mascot for the Borden Company. In 1940 she married Elmer, who began promoting Bordens glue. Together they had Beulah. Elmer and Elsie appeared on dozens of products, including, of course, your coffee cups. I suspect your set of four are worth in the $12 to $20 range. Q: I recently found a coin that celebrated the Chicago Worlds Fair of 1933. The design includes what appears to be a Nazi swastika, odd for such a coin. A: Before the symbol was co-opted by Hitler and his regime, it was used in many ancient religions, including ones in India and China. The strawberry got its name from the common practice of growing berries under straw to protect them from winter cold and late spring frosts. A member of the rose family, the strawberry sometimes gives off a rose-like aroma. Many speculate about how the luscious fruit was discovered. It is known that the strawberry goes as far back as the Romans and perhaps even the Greeks. Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that may reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. It helps protect the skin from bruising, helps heal cuts and keeps gums healthy. One cup of strawberries provides 3 grams of fiber and only 46 calories. Strawberries also have potassium, which can help maintain healthy blood pressure. When picking or buying packages of strawberries, look for ripe, shiny and brilliantly colored berries without any soft or brown patches. When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there is a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed. Dispose of any berries that have signs of mildew or are rotten, as theyll contaminate the rest. Refrigerating strawberries ruins the flavor, and the strawberry aroma is easily picked up by other foods in the refrigerator. Store the berries in a cool place. Strawberries should be lightly rinsed, not washed before serving, and eaten as soon as possible. This Strawberry and Spinach Salad with blue cheese crumbles and a balsamic-based dressing is a berry good way to serve strawberries.

Finding Source of Toilet Puddle

By Samantha Mazzotta Q: The other day I noticed a small puddle of water at the base of the toilet. Its clean water so I think its a leak from the tank, but I cant find any visible drips. What should I do? Christine H., via email A: Try to pinpoint the source of the problem. Visually check the tank and the bowl for cracks most toilets are pretty sturdy, so its unusual for them to crack. The tank is more likely to crack, and if so, it needs to be completely replaced. If you dont find a crack, check the shutoff valve (usually what looks like a faucet handle jutting from the wall below and behind the toilet) and its attached inlet tube for leaks. Flush the toilet so that the tank begins filling, and observe the inlet components. Next, test whether the leak is happening in the tank. Take the tank top off. Flush the toilet and let the tank refill completely. Then, take a crayon or wax pencil and mark the highwater point with a small line. Come back in 10 minutes and see if the water is still at that point or has gone down. If it has fallen below the line, check some possible sources of the leak. First, make sure the flapper valve at the bottom of the tank is completely closed. This is one of the biggest causes of a slow leak from a tank. Once youve eliminated all the smaller reasons for the puddle of water on the floor, its time to look at a more serious possibility: that the seal between the base of the toilet and the floor has begun to fail. Its not a particularly difficult repair, but the toilet will have to be lifted off the base in order for the wax ring to be replaced. If you dont have much experience with toilet repairs, calling a plumber may be necessary.

The Continental Divide Trail is a 3,100-mile hiking trail that runs from Mexico to Canada. It winds around on New Mexicos Continental Divide for 700 miles, and it crosses U.S. Highway 81 the paved road running from Hatchita down to Antelope Wells. There is a kiosk with maps and information by the side of the highway. Next to that is a steel box with a notebook containing the signatures of hikers who passed by here in the last year. There were fewer than 20. They started signing in last April heading north, sometimes in groups of two or three... sometimes alone. Near the end of October, a few other hikers showed up, this time heading south, so close to the border their excitement is obvious. They know Mexico lies just beyond the Big Hatchet Mountains just ahead of them. A person can almost see forever out here. That is why the Apaches loved it so: from their camps in the mountains they could see the soldiers coming for 20 miles. The last entrees in the notebook were from a hiker with the trail name of E.T. (Call home...get it?), dated 10/27/11 and again on 10/29. The first one reads, Lots of dead critters in the water around here. TASTY. The last one reads, Hiking back to Lordsburg to take the Greyhound home. Got charged by wild boars in Sheridan Canyon. Congratulations, E.T.! And if you get a chance, well...call. There is no one who can argue that the La Luz Trail is the way up to Sandia Crest by which all other trails are measured. The numbers tell the story: eight miles one way and 3,000 feet of elevation gain. Compare that to Tree Spring Trail: two miles one way and 1,000 feet of gain. Not only that, the Tree Spring Trail is mostly in the shade and cooler. It starts above the ski area on the east slope and goes straight up to a low notch on the crest. Perfect. But please take a wilderness map. 2. Canoe the Rio. Had it with hiking? Why not try paddling instead? This is sure to become a family favorite. 7. Ride ABQ Trolley. Touted as The best first thing to do in Albuquerque, taking a ride on the open-air, stuccoenhanced trolley gives a wonderful tour of some of the best of Albuquerque. I used netting one year, and found a bird had gotten stuck in the netting and died. Is there a kind that you recommend? Betty H., via email A: I think bird netting is a good idea for gardeners with fruit-producing plants that are attractive to birds. In choosing a covering, consider the size of the net. It is important that the net material is large enough to reach to the ground where it may be staked to prevent birds from entering the tree from under the net. Another option is to choose a net large enough to reach back to the trunk of the tree where it can be tied, so that the birds are again prevented from entering through the base of the covering. If birds get into the net, from below or from any gap in the coverage, they will be trapped inside. They may injure themselves trying to get out, or they may enjoy feasting on your fruit during their captivity. Another consideration is the weight of the netting material. Thicker, heavier material may last longer, but may weigh

Keep a map or globe in your family or TV room. This way, when a place is mentioned on the news or in another program, you can find it quickly on the map. This is a great thing to do with kids, but its handy and worthwhile for anyone. If you have a very stinky trash can, scrub it with a paste made from baking soda and just a bit of water. It works as a mild abrasive. Then fill a spray bottle with plain white vinegar and spray. It should foam for a moment. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then rinse well with hot water. Clean and deodorized! Control kids artwork with a digital photo album. Take photos of the best pictures of the month, then arrange them in a scrapbook template and print them out. Keep the pages in a three-ring binder. Label with the childs name. I found a bunch of guttering at a garage sale supercheap, and was inspired to bring it INSIDE my house. I purchased end pieces at my local hardware store and cut the gutters to fit inside my closet. They line the wall all the way up in horizontal rows. The answer for most folks is that they have the cool drink, but theyre not surrounded by beauty. Sitting and looking at a quarter-acre of grey gravel with a couple of scraggly plants does not a pretty picture make. Many homeowners have no connection to their landscape because it looks so bad. Oh, I know youre thinking my situation is different because Im a landscape designer and I probably spend massive amounts of money and every waking hour working in the yard. Wrong! A good landscape is not cheap, but I spend most weekends in the desert or mountains enjoying natural beauty. This may shock you, but I spend a

Use The Power Of Your Mind To Lose Weight!

By Mary Girsh-Bock Americans continue to struggle with obesity. Its currently estimated that 1 in 3 Americans is considered overweight or obese. Just recently, talk show host Oprah Winfrey announced that she had gained 40 pounds, another episode in her saga to lose weight and keep it off. What about you? Despite your best efforts, do you continue to struggle with your weight? Have you lost weight in the past only to put it back on again? Do you continue to struggle with certain foods, unable to eat them in moderation? Why is it so difficult to lose weight, and, more importantly, not gain it back? According to Dr. Marji Prefontaine, until a persons mindset is changed, there will always be a good chance that lost weight will return. That mindset change takes place using hypnosis. What hypnosis does is deal with food as an addiction, says Dr. Prefontaine, who holds a doctorate in marriage and family counseling, and has been in practice for over 30 years. When youre stressed, you tend to eat more, says Dr. Prefontaine. Currently, only 15 percent of the people who lose weight keep it off for two years, says Dr. Prefontaine. But through hypnosis, Dr. Prefontaine says she is able to help her patients determine what is causing their particular food addiction and help them address those issues, and in the process recover from their food addiction. According to Dr. Prefontaine, food is the final addiction. Food addiction is no different from any other type of addiction, says Dr. Prefontaine. In fact, studies have shown that former drug, alcohol and tobacco addicts often end up developing a food addiction as well, says Dr. Prefontaine. Hypnosis changes the thought process. Once the thought process has been changed, you begin to look at food differently. It stops being an addiction and simply becomes fuel for survival. You eat to live, not live to eat. Dr. Prefontaine creates an individualized program for each of her patients. People eat for a variety of reasons, including boredom, stress or depression, says Dr. Prefontaine. For instance, after the program, she says a patient previously addicted to sugar will be able to look at a plate of chocolate chip cookies with indifference. Hypnotherapy is now being used for controlling hypertension and easing pain. In fact, Jackson Memorial Hospital in South Florida now uses hypnotherapy during surgery. Hospital studies have shown that patients choosing hypnotherapy over traditional general anesthesia have half as many post-operative complications. Several years ago, the television show 20/20 did a program comparing various weight loss methods, including hypnosis, the Atkins diet, regular workouts, and working with a nutritionist. Hypnosis won, with study participants losing more weight, and losing it easier. Along with offering weight loss programs through hypnosis, Dr. Prefontaine also offers grief therapy, marriage and family counseling, and relationship therapy. If youre going through a divorce, or even considering divorce, chances are that counseling would benefit you, says Dr. Prefontaine, who also offers counseling for kids, along with positive parenting sessions for parents.
