CELEBRATE THE RUN FOR THE ROSES WITH THE CCC On Saturday, May 5 at 4 pm, the Salem Courthouse Community Center with be hosting a Kentucky Derby party at the lovely home of Cindy Spence at 89 Nelson Avenue in Saratoga Springs, directly across from the track. Excitement over the 138th Derby is mounting, and plans are underway to celebrate the event with delicious food, a cash wine bar and fun betting. Cindy has 2 large-screen televisions so that guests may share the excitement as Union Rags, Ill Have Another and Creative Cause vie for the title. Women are encouraged to don their favorite hat as part of this festive event. ROYALIST ENCAMPMENT- Royalist Americanscommonly known to us as Torieswill take over the Breymann Redoubt on Saturday and Sunday, May 5th and 6th, each day from 10am to 4pm at Saratoga Battlefield, located on Route 32 and 4 in Stillwater. Encamped upon an original loyalist campsite from the 1777 Battles of Saratoga, men and women portraying Royalist American soldiers and followers will demonstrate some aspects of 18th-century military life including preparation of authentic military camp food (yuck!), musket drills, and army clothing sewing demonstrations. They will also tell compelling stories of the wartime sufferings of the Americans who chose to remain loyal to King George III during the Revolutionary War. They may even convince you to join the cause to help suppress their neighboring Patriot Americans! The event is free and open to the public, although an entrance fee to the auto tour road is charged. Passes are $5 per carload of people or $3 per adult to bike or hike. A one-year pass to the Battlefield costs $10. Coordinated by Dennis Wilson, these performers are members North Creeks Our Town Theater Group (OTTG), and have delighted audiences in Fort Edward, Chestertown, Indian Lake and Lake Pleasant, where they have they revived an entertainment genre made popular in Dickensian era British Isles. In those days, readers would share oral renditions of poetry or prose for a mere penny. Wilson says their group has an improvement on that format. COMIC STRIPS AND CHARACTERS TO BE CELEBRATED AT WHIPPLE CITY PARADE This years opening parade for the Whipple City Festival will be a celebration of THE SUNDAY COMICS. Organizations, groups, families, and individuals are invited to include a float or walking contingent in the parade on Friday evening, June 15. Local businesses and organizations can band together to exalt their favorite comic-strip characters, from old classics such as Charlie Brown or Beetle Bailey, to newer standards, such as Mutts and Zits. Recognition will be given for the best float or group in three categories: The Most Comical, The Most Super Heroic, and The Most Animated. Although following this years theme is encouraged, any float or group or individual is welcome to march. The Parade is being planned by the Whipple City Festival Committee.
