Action we can take: Donate money Visit Animal Asia Write letters to the government Ask people to sign a piece of paper so we can give it to the government (Probably not because animals asia tried that but it did not work and we are less powerful than animals asia) Everyday day try to put your notes on google docs. REMEMBER!

AW BANJO Instead of hurting moon bears you would laugh and be happy with them like Banjo.

They trap the moon bears in these cages for 30 years and they will cut the finger tips so the bears would not scratch them when they stick a small pole through their gall bladder.

THIS IS TERRIBLE!

Read a comic to learn more about the cruelty to moon bears.

Some moon bears stayed in those cages since they were a baby, so they have not remembered about their past. People want to show these moon bears that playing outside is fun . But they would rather stay in the cages because they thought going outside would be dangerous because they have never seen the sun before and some were really scared to go outside.

People have vet care so they can take care of these moon bears. There is another problem because moon bears are very smart and they do not like taking medicine . What Animal Asia did was that they put medicine inside treats like marshmallows and feed them like this so they would not know they are medicine inside. There are still some cases that have failed which means that some moon bears know when they are giving medicine to them. People try to figure out ways to give them medicine without them knowing. People must give medicine to some moon bears because some of them feel sick since they have lived in cages for over 30 years and can still live, but they must take medicine because some germs are stuck inside their body that cant be treated that easily.

Our essential agreement

We will finish all my assigned work on time We will do my best to work with all the members of our group We will put in our best effort in the exhibition http://www.animalsasia.org/index.php?UID=9A6U8C7WX75

I am from Bradbury School and our unit of Inquiry is about issues that affect HK so we chose moon bear farming so me and my group goodbye

are wondering if one of your members can be interviewed by me and some of my group? Ok can you contact this number when we can interview one of your members ... Its ok if you dont want to be interviewed but it would be really good if you could. Its ok we can do something else bye bye.

The interview would only be about 30 or so minutes so thank you goodbye.

Research: In countries across Asia a lot of bears are tortured on bear farms so that their " bile " (biol) can be extracted from their body this happens because moon bears can withstand pain more than any other animal or human being in the whole world and this also happens because moon bears have a lot of bile so it can be used as traditional medicine to cure headaches and other severe head pains . Moon bears are kept in cages that can either be horrible tight "crush" cages in which a moon bear can hardly move in or larger but just as terrifying big cages both of these cages can effect a moon bear very badly like for example a moon bear can lose his /her leg or their brain can be damaged either way this stuff should stop just because a moon bear can bear pain doesn't mean they don't feel it .

From: animalsasia.org/index by Tavishi research: fraser how many bears did they rescue? vietnam bear rescue saved 104 bears
when did they take action?

they first rescue was in 1992

what did they do?have they taken more than one action? they got the government to sign a contract that said that animal

Asia can rescue 200 moon bears in september in 2005.they did

more than one thing they sent a letter to the vietnamese prime minister that said to let 79 bears free!
are they successful?

Animal asia was very successful and it became one of the most famous companies in the world for helping moon bears in fact they got so successful that they could help other animal thick dogs and cats.
what are some of the problems the rescuers faced?

one of the fingers that Animal Asia had to face was one of the bears had been in the dark for so long that he was scared of the light when he got free and it took a year to get the bear of the cages.

CHINA Moon Bears

- When did they first take action? Jill Robinson started Animals Asia in 1998, their first action was to sign agreements to the governments of Vietnam and China. -What have they done? . They have also taken action on cats and dogs by saving . them

- Was Animal Asia successful? Yes, because they were able to get enough money from the government to take care of the moon bears so they can have medicine and food for the moon bears and equipment to have fun and enjoy on.,on pment a good habitat. How many bears did they rescue? Animal Asia rescued around 500 moon bears in China.

What were some of the problems the rescuers faced? Moon bears don't like taking medicine so Animal Asia has to find a way to give them medicine by putting medicine in candy or other sweet things that moon bears like to eat.
What is one problem that stands in the way of rescuing moon bears? there is a new question ! FRASER: Websites moon bears press bile bear - wikipedia the free encyclopedia torment of the moon bears /UK news / the guardian

ASHLIN: http://sharonbowles.org.uk/en/page/moonbears
1. 9,000 bears in China are kept in fridge like cages that prevent their movement so the bear farmers can get the bile easily. 2. After the bear has been set free it might still have serious damages to its body, still meaning death. 3. Sometimes the bears go hiper so they bash their head against the cage bars so they get brain damage.

TAVISHI: my website http://www.moonbears.co.uk/

Entering the family home behind the sign, I am greeted by a scene of comfortable domesticity. A baby crawls on the dark teak floorboards; a teapot sits on a table in the front room; a dog pants in a shady corner, sweltering in the exhausting summer heat. Through an open door, down a short corridor and out through the rear of the house, the scene is rather different. Trapped in tiny, cramped cages above urine-soaked floors there are eight large Asiatic black bears. Bear-farming is a relatively new business in Laos. The practice involves keeping Asiatic black bears in battery-farm conditions where they have their bile, which is used in traditional Chinese medicine, regularly extracted. This small Vietnamese-run farm, an offshoot of a larger one in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, is one of at least eight such farms one of which holds about 100 bears known to have opened across the country in the past decade. Welfare organisations believe other smaller farms exist in Laos, although they do not appear on government records. Bear bile has been used in Asian medicine for thousands of years. The bitter yellow fluid is made in the liver, then stored in the gall bladder until it is released to help break down fats during digestion. Traditionally it is believed to 'relieve internal heat, but its supposed powers are myriad and it is prescribed for everything from hangovers to cancer and is found in products from edible powders to shower gels. From:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/laos/7950161 /Inside-a-bear-bile-farm-in-Laos.html

What do they do ?: Bile is usually extracted twice a day from a planted tube giving 10 -20 mL of bile each time the process seems to be painful as the bears can be seen moaning and chewing their paws while being milked.Another method is pushing a hollow steel stick through the bears abdomen. Using metal catheters (a flexible tube inserted into a persons body to remove fluid) is a illegal way yet people are still seen doing it.The free drip method is seems to be the least painful method it is done by making a permanent hole in the bears abdomen and gall bladder so the bile just comes out by itself freely the wound can easily be infected . from:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bile_bear What happens to the bears that cannot produce bile anymore? They are... put down (killed) -tavishi mom If the bears stop producing bile, they are left to die, or killed for their gallbladder and paws (considered a delicacy in China). Questions for Animal Asia: 1. What have you done to help the moon bears in the past? 2. What are possible actions we can take to help you or the moon bears? 3. How many bears die every year and how many bears have you saved? 4. Can bears run out of bile? (If they can) can they live without it? 5. Why are moon bears important ? 6. why dont we just kill all the moon bears ? 7. why are moon bears more important than human beings ?

Action we can take Ashlin: We can ask a load of people to sign a big piece of paper so we can give it to the government so he/she can maybe give the bears a better home. We can raise money by bake sales and different kinds of ways so we can give it to Animal Asia so they can buy new things for the moon bears. Send a letter to the government so he/she could lower the amount of bears used so farmers dont have too much. Stick some pieces of paper around your house so people are aware.

ways to put medicine in food: 1. Honey 2. sweets 3. Apple 4. Orange 5. grape 6. blue berries 7. Orange 8. big gummy 9. Cookies Fraser moonbear get trapped in these cages for about 30 year that is like half of their life and in these farms they get treeted really badely for example they take bile from the moon bear 5 to 6 times a day and it hirts the moonbears really bad people only do it because people think that moon bears can resist pan more than humans so they do it for years and years and the bears finally try to kill themselves because they get operat in really bad hygiene places and the wound gets so infected that it gives the bears brain damage and in their insides they have taken the bile so many time that it is really messed up in the inside and they farmers cut of the tips of the fingers so the bears can swip at the people that are taking the bile. question:fraser why do people need bile can bears sivave with out bile and if they can not how long

Ashlin List of facts: The Moon bears names were originally called Asiatic Black Bears. The bile from the bear comes from their gall bladders. People use moon bears because the bears produces a lot of bile. Bears live live more than 22 years in pain. Bile gets extracted from the bears about 2 times a day. Metal tubes get put into the gall bladder which is right next to the bears liver. Some bears get head wounds because they go hiper and bash their heads against the bars. Some of the farmers snip off the the tips of the bears fingers so the bears dont swipe at the farmers when they are extracting the bile out. The moon bears got their name by their yellow stripe on their chest which looks like the moon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGzg8q60YsU

why did we choose this issue? Tavishi: Because I think every type of species deserves a right to live :( Alison:

Ashlin:
I think every living thing are all equal, so they deserve every right to live. Bears are not the only ones that can produce bile, we can so why cant we be trapped in cages for bile. So bears especially are not having freedom because they are used for people that want bile for themselves. I think that bears should have some more freedom or they should be treated more nicely. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Our real paragraphs

What are moon bears: Moon bears were originally called Asiatic Black Bears, they changed their names to moon bears because of their yellow moon shape across their chest. Moon bears have the brain of a 3 year old which means they are very intelligent for an animal. The moon bears live around China in forests where they can climb trees and hunt. The moon bears are endangered species because of bear farms, if the bear farming continues the moon bears will be extinct.

What is bile: Bile comes from the gallbladder which is near the liver. The bear farmers first have to put a small tube in the bears gallbladder to extract the bile out. The bile is a yellow gooey liquid inside the gallbladder, people use bile for when they have headaches, sore eyes, diarrhea and many others. When the farmers have extra bile they sometimes put it in your shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and others.
