Honoring Our 2012 Pro Bono Award Recipients

Dade Legal Aid salutes the 2012 award winners who unselfishly gave of their time to make Access to the Courts a Reality. They have been a part of the oldest provider of free legal services in Miami-Dade and we as a community applaud and thank them. Dade Legal Aid truly appreciates the efforts of all 6,000 dedicated lawyers, 200+ law firm participants and law schools that passionately support its mission of providing protection to children, families, victims of domestic violence and other vulnerable persons. We recognize and thank the outstanding individuals for their dedication and commitment to putting something back.

Bankruptcy Law Award - Jordi Guso Mr. Guso, a partner with the business law firm Berger Singerman, represents debtors, official committees and secured creditors in the areas of bankruptcy, insolvency and debtor-creditor relations. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America since 2006 and Chambers & Partners USA, America's Leading Business Lawyers in Bankruptcy/ Restructuring since its inception in 2004. As a member of the Pro Bono Committee of the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the Southern District of Florida, he finds it immensely rewarding to help others by handling cases, staffing clinics and mentoring students. Associate s, devote d nearly 500 hou rs on 35 family law case s. In addition, he is a driving force behind our Annual Vie w from the Bench Family Law Seminar now in its 26th year.

Bonnie L. Cooper Probate & Guardianship Award Liz Consuegra In memory of one of its biggest supporters, the Probate & Guardianship Committee dedicated this award to the memory of Bonnie Cooper. While so many members are truly deserving of this prestigious award, Liz Consuegra, a partner with Fowler White Burnett, PA who recently accepted 20 probate cases, is this year's recipient for her devotion and commitment to providing pro bono services. A permanent plaque in memory of Bonnie Cooper remains at Dade Legal Aid.

Small Firm of the Year Award Law Offices of Squires Benson, P .L. Gilbert K. Squires and Olivia S. Benson actively partake in countless complex and challenging causes benefiting the community and beyond. The partners devote their firm's expertise in probate, civil, real estate and business law to a multitude of important and diverse causes, such as Douglas Gardens Community Homes Board, the Anti-Defamation League Civil Rights Committee and the Hispanic Jewish Initiative Committee.

Innovative Project Award - Jane W. Muir, Battle of the Legal Bands As Chair of "Band Together for Dade Legal Aid" and a partner at Gersten & Muir, P Ms. Muir helped launch the First Annual Battle .A., of the Legal Bands, which engaged the entire community to participate in a first of its kind fundraiser where legal greats unleashed their inner rock star in support of Dade Legal Aid. With the help of a fabulous committee including UM Law Women, and the St. Thomas University Law Student Chapter of the DCBA, the event raised $12,000 and will become an annual event to benefit Dade Legal Aid.

Wills on Wheels Award - Gary Kornik Mr. Kornik, of Fromberg, Perlow & Kornik PA, has drafted dozens of wills and handled estate planning matters for new Habitat for Humanity homeowners and elderly homebound clients. Without his services, these communities would remain unserved. He is always ready, willing and able to help multiple clients at a time. As an avid pro bono participant, Mr. Kornik has expended many hours.

Family Law Award - Regina Zelonker Ms. Zelonker, a solo practitioner and long time South Miami Kendall Bar Association member, has provided stability to countless children and families by taking numerous contested divorce and custody cases. For decades, she has been available whenever called upon to help families in need. Her services are in great need and we salute her efforts.

Richard C. Milstein Excellence Award - James Pollack Mr. Pollack or "Jimmy" spends his time at Legal Aid conducting client intake and providing legal advice. He has donated hundreds of hours of his time and expertise to advising clients and helping other attorneys with their cases, Jimmy is a mentor who shines above the rest and is a true example of making Access to Justice for All a Reality. Congratulations on the 2012 Florida Bar President Pro Bono Award for our circuit presented earlier this year. We are truly honored to name Jimmy the 14th recipient of the Richard C. Milstein Excellence Award.
