Bangkok Christian College Intensive English Program Orientation

Welcome to the BCC Intensive English Program Major points of orientation 1. A Warm Welcome to New Teachers Please do not hesitate to ask for help if you need anything. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome new teachers to the IEP Department. We hope that you have many happy, rewarding and positive experiences as you teach at BCC. The IEP teachers in this department are very friendly, supportive and approachable so please do not hesitate to seek them out if you need anything. 2. Answers to First Questions Rooms will be assigned and room keys will be distributed shortly. Class schedules and roll sheets will be distributed by May 14th 2012. Our Support Teacher, will distribute room assignments and classroom keys. You may keep the key until the end of the academic year, but you must replace the key if you lose it. If you leave your key at home, please see Tum, our Office Manager for a duplicate key. Duplicate keys must be returned to Tum at the end of the day. Class schedules and roll sheets will be distributed before the students come back on May 14th 2012. Strong classes have high numbers before a decimal and low numbers after a decimal. Weak classes are low numbers before a decimal and high numbers after a decimal. Class rolls are to be kept in the green class folders that your coordinator will give to you on Monday. 3. The Year Starts Off with: The agenda for the first week usually includes Meetings, Opening Ceremonies, Orientation, Room Decoration, Lesson Planning and writing Introduction Letters, Distribution of Course book and Materials, Ice Breaking and Review and discussion of class rules. 4. When Students Return (Monday 14th May 2012) Meet the students and learn their names. Do not turn away students who are not on your roll. Allow any student into your class. Correct names on the roll sheets. Identify students who are not on the roll sheet. Provide a list to your coordinator. If you notice any of your students need special help, please notify Montira immediately. LS1 teachers meet students at their homeroom and take them to class at the beginning of every lesson and take the students back to their homeroom at the end of every lesson. This must be done for every lesson throughout the year. LS2, LS3, and LS4 teachers should be waiting in their IEP classrooms when they are scheduled to teach and wait for the students to come to class. Homeroom teachers will get a copy of the IEP class rolls and they will tell the students which classrooms to go to. 5. Issue Materials Count course books. On the first day of class, assign books and materials. Do not assign books to students who are not on the roll sheet. Make a list of students who did not receive books and give it to your coordinator. Do not make arrangements with other teachers to get books you need. Give extra books to your coordinator. When you have met with all your classes for any given year level, give all extra books to your coordinator right away. Give students a shopping list of supplies to purchase. Discuss class rules. Start a personal profiles project. 6. Routines Swipe-in in before 7:30. Swipe in and out whenever you are on campus. Stay in the office between 7:30 and 7:40.

Check the cover class list. Lunch in the teachers cafeteria is free. Break for LS3 is 9:30 to 10:10. Keep breaks to a minimum. Dont swipe out for brief breaks. Swipe-out M-TH is at 4:00. Friday is at 3:15. Check the computer shutdown roster. Meetings are held weekly to discuss units and assessment tasks, share ideas, receive updates and information, and answer questions. Please touch base often, not just at meetings. Touch base often with coordinators. Be easy to locate. Stay on campus unless you provide a memo. Please do not leave campus except for short periods of time, and do not leave for extended periods unless you leave a typed, dated memo with your coordinator and with Teacher Montira. A 50 baht service fee is collected each month. Also Conform to the dress code Computer Room duty will assigned for 1 lunch period per week in lieu of clubs. A copy of the school calendar is available in English, which will include dates for upcoming fire drills. 7. After School Conversation Classes Afterschool Conversation Classes are available to teach for extra pay. Classes are M/W or T/TH at 3:00, right after the last regular class period. Most classes are Prathom classes. Do mostly games and activities. There is a syllabus, but no set curriculum, so it is a good opportunity to experiment. Collect pay on 2nd Floor of the Sirinard Building. If you are interested in teaching an after school conversation class, please go to see _____ and sign up for it before 18th May.The classes start on the 1st of June. 8. Releasing Students at the End of the Class Please make sure you dont let your students go too early. For LS1, we suggest that approximately 5 minutes before the end of the period; you start to have your students line up. Give students 1-2 minutes to line up and then take 1-2 minutes to walk them back to their homeroom. For LS2, LS3 and LS4, please allow students 10 minutes to arrive before marking them late. Please let them leave about 2-3 minutes before the period ends. 9. Classrooms All teachers will have their own classrooms. Protect school property. Encourage students and teachers to keep rooms and office areas clean. Do not allow food or drinks in class. Generally, no food and drink is allowed. For teachers : No food or drink apart from bottled water is allowed. Turn off lights and air conditioning. Lock your room when you are away. Create large ESL posters and decorations. Display current student work in classrooms and hallways. 10. Lesson Plans Lesson plans are due every Friday. Content for lessons is outlined in the curriculum grids. Keep lesson plans in your green folder. Keep folders in the cabinet. Describe what the students will do, using complete sentences; and highlight games or fun activities. Attach copies of supplemental material. Homework will be assigned 2-3 times a week. Most homework will be to prepare for vocabulary tests, work on writing tasks and prepare for speaking presentations. Appropriate methods feedback will be discussed. There are many books computers and other resources available to help with lesson planning. Tum and Preeda will distribute radios that have miscelaneous CD or USB features.

Resources Sign up for computer labs, libraries, audio visual equipment, office supplies, books and various other resources and services. Request or sign up for IEP computer lab access, library access, audio visual equipment, resource library materials, office supplies and art materials, Xerox copies, maintenance of facilities, and other resources and services. Fill in the appropriate form, attach your lesson plan and give the form to Montira. The office computers are for Internet access. 11. Rewards policy Implement the official rewards policy. Proactively develop a class policy. For example you can offer verbal encouragement, video rewards, and trips to the computer lab. You can offer class parties as a reward at Christmas and at the end of the year. Clean up after class parties. 12. Discipline Use the Discipline Code, but focus on as few students as possible. Keep accurate records, assign detention, and fill out incident reports if necessary. Assign multi-purpose counseling (detention, remedial etc.), available M-F during every break. Also work to improve your own classroom management. 13. Downtime Planning and Documentation Write lesson plans. Complete the Work Done Record. Create resources. Mark unit assessment tasks, midterm exams and final exams for reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary. Evaluate writing and speaking according to the rubrics provided. Enter marks every quarter for reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary. Otherwise give feedback on a routine basis. Write detailed student reports every semester. Work collaboratively on curriculum development, creating assessment, and creating supplementary activities and resources. Observe and evaluate peers according to the roster. Take roll for classes, activities and detention. Complete the Work Done Record. 14. General Staff Conduct No smoking is allowed on the school premises Please follow the dress code. Please be polite, courteous and helpful when interacting with Thai teachers Please be polite, courteous and helpful in the IEP Teachers Office. Dont be rude, noisy or messy. All IEP teachers are asked to pay a 50 Baht Levy on every Pay Day of the month to Tum, our Office Manager. The money will go towards the purchase of water, services of cleaning staff and other amenities. 15. Camps Prathom camps are at the end of every semester. Mattayom camps are once a year, and usually last a week away from campus. When IEP has camps, please help in any way requested.. During the year, keep an eye out for good activities (sports, art, music, drama, cooking etc). Prathom camps are at the end of every semester. Chain of Command All IEP teachers need to follow a specified procedure if they have any questions, concerns or grievances. Questions, concerns or grievances are subject to the chain of command and specified procedure. All correspondence to College Administrators must go through the Department Head. First, approach your Learning Stage Coordinator. If your LS Coordinator cannot help you, or if you are not satisfied with the outcome, you may see the Department Head. If the Department Head unable to assist you, you may write to the Director, but please keep in mind that College policy dictates that all correspondence to the College Administrators must go through the Department Head.
