THE CELL CYCLE BY EMMA FOSTER VERSION ONE

FADE IN OPENING A solid, bold background with a jazz soundtrack sets the scene for what is to come. The title The Cell Cycle adorns the screen but is soon wiped from view by a passing cell, only to be replaced by A UCA Release. UPWARDS WIPE ACT 1 SCENE 1 A new background takes place of the opening and a cell soon enters from the left. The camera TRACKS its process while other cells enter from all sides of the screen and follow. One cell starts flickering followed by a POP sounding its end of life. The rest of the cells come to a halt then start to quickly leave the scene. The rush of this departure leaves the word Interphase on screen. ACT 1 SCENE 2 The camera TRACKS the texts process over to the left where it makes contact with a static cell and changes to read G1 Phase. The cell starts to move along when it gradually gets bigger. The beginning of this growing leads to the dashed cell membrane/wall to leave its place and intertwine to form the word grow. As the cell gets bigger, reaching the majority of its full size the text grows too. The text unravels to retake its place as the membrane/wall. The cell continues to move alone as organelles make their way on screen and into the cell. ACT 1 SCENE 3

The appearance of one organelle on screen acts as a transition where the cell is now moving along a new background. It arrives in front of a barrier bearing the text G1 Checkpoint which comes down and adopts a waiting state of orange colouring. Another cell enters from the far distance however; this cell is defective with no nucleus. This defective cell approaches the barrier when it turns red and hits the cell back into the distance. A PING and then the small text of G0 indicate that this cell will not be passing through interphase. The normal cell approaches and is given a green light. The barrier lifts now bearing G2 Phase. The cell passes through this into a different coloured scene. ACT 1 SCENE 4 A strand of DNA slivers out of the cell nucleus. It pulls apart pulling the camera down too. Letters bounce on screen spelling out Duplication. They then turn into new bases which take their places onto the duplicated DNA strands. The strands stand up revealing the cell and sliver back inside. The cell continues to grow gradually taking up most of the screen. The two letters G2 appear inside the cell and then transform into two centrosomes. Camera ZOOMS fully into the cell changing the screen to the cytoplasm colour.

ACT 2 SCENE 1 The two centrosomes move apart and off screen leaving the word Prophase where they were. Camera PANS over the nucleus where the chromosomes in begin to condense. As the last strand condenses it spells out Sister Chromatids.

ACT 2 SCENE 2 The nucleus envelope fragments where it then forms Prometaphase on the background colour of the nucleus. This background DISSOLVES as the nucleus would and the sister chromatids are now floating about the screen. Kinetochores enter as a line and disperse attaching themselves to the chromatids centromeres. The camera TRACKS upwards after the last kinetochore (which changes to spell the name) where it rests on one of the centrosomes. This centrosome begins to release microtubule strands. The strands are TRACKED downwards back towards the chromatids. One strand continues down where the other centrosome is shown. This also releases strands which are TRACKED up towards the chromatids. The microtubules change colour depending on whether they will become kinetochore or nonkinetochore. The kinetochore microtubules attach to the kinetochores. ACT 2 SCENE 3 The kinetochore microtubules pull the sister chromatids around the screen until they are pulled right off leaving the word Metaphase in its place. The spindle enters from the left and the chromatids re-enter the screen lining up on top of the spindle.

ACT 3 SCENE 1 The nonkinetochore microtubules then enter and rub against each other. The chromatids are pulled/split apart. The action of the pulling brings the word Anaphase on screen. These daughter chromosomes are taken off screen. The spindle fibres disintegrate making the nonkinetochore microtubules retreat.

ACT 3 SCENE 2 On the retreat of the nonkinetochore microtubules two nuclei swim on screen. As the camera ZOOMS out these nuclei spread onto either pole of the screen. The nucleus envelope fragments swirl on spelling out Telophase on their way back to encircling the nuclei. The chromosomes return to uncondensed state and the nuclei inflate to enclose them. ACT 3 SCENE 3 Camera ZOOMS out to return to original background behind the cell. Ring shapes enter from all sides and join together to form the words Cleavage Furrow. This cleavage furrow makes a lasso shape and tightens around the cell squeezing it. A POP signals the splitting and the cell divides into two leaving Cytokinesis in the split. ACT 3 SCENE 4 The two cells are tracked along by the camera, more cells quickly dividing on the way. The screen is soon full of cells. One pops and the camera ZOOMS into the gap. CREDITS.
