Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?15 Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Message: Jesus is the Son of God, who rose from the grave and ascended into heaven to prepare a place for all those who confess their sins and trust in Him. The name Jesus means, Yahweh meaning salvation. Jesus is the One who saves us from our sins in order that we may go to heaven when

Jesus returns someday. Jesus was born around 6 B.C. That was a very long time ago long before you or anyone that you know was born. B.C. means before Christ. A.D. mean after His death. The name of Jesus brings peace to many people. When we call on His name, he hears us and will answer our prayers. When Jesus came to earth as a baby in about 6 B.C., he grew up like any other boy, yet without sin. When he was about the age of 30, he began working for God, his heavenly Father. This was one of the reasons God sent him here. He healed many sick, and loved the people telling them many wonderful stories. One day, Jesus went to the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist. John did not feel worthy to baptize Jesus, but he was obedient to his Lord. When Jesus came up out of the water, a special thing took place. The sky opened up and a voice from heaven spoke these words, This is my Son who I am very pleased with. After that, a special presence from the Holy Spirit settled down upon Jesus. Here we see an example of the Trinity. Jesus who was baptized, the Father spoke from heaven, and the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus as he stood there in the water. Jesus was baptized and is our example of what we are to do after we become a Christian get baptized. Jesus eventually returned to heaven in order that the Holy Spirit may come into our hearts and help us make good choices. He is preparing a place for us. The Holy Spirit will baptize us with His presence and love if we surrender our lives to Him.

Questions for Discussion: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Who is God the Father? Who is God the Son? Who is God the Holy Spirit? Why was Jesus baptized? Why did Jesus leave us and go back to heaven?

Learning Game: Give each child two slices of bread and provide a jar of peanut butter and jelly. You can use this as your snack to reinforce this lesson. Say: How many like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? (Hopefully they all do) If you do not like peanut butter and jelly, lets pretend that you do today. We are going to make a sandwich. Watch me. (Take a slice of bread and add the peanut butter and then the jelly. Place the second slice of bread on top) Say: What have I made here? Answer: a peanut butter sandwich. This is one sandwich yet it has on it three things here: bread, peanut butter, and jelly. How many sandwiches do you see here? Right, only one sandwich is here. The Trinity is one and three persons. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All are one person, yet they are three. God the Father sent God the Son to world as a Baby and when God the Son went back to heaven after his resurrection, God the Holy Spirit came to live in our hearts when we confess our sins, and helps us every day to be like God the Son kind, forgiving, loving, and showing mercy to others when they are mean to us. Lets sing this song about the Trinity. Suggestion: (Sing to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star) God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit, three in One. God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit, three in One. God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit, three in One. Rev. Jeanne McIntosh May 2012. All rights reserved.
