2011-2012 Spirit Fund Annual Giving Campaign Update Due to the diligence of our Spirit Fund Board, the 2011-2012 campaign is progressing well. The Spirit Fund has received $68,528.89 as of April 24, 2012. This past Saturday, six SMART boards and accessories were installed in various classrooms. The administration paired a $16,000 grant from the Lutz Foundation with general funds raised through the Spirit Fund to pay for the SMART boards. A certified SMART board instructor is scheduled to work with teachers receiving the new SMART boards. During the 2010-2011 year, the Spirit Fund raised $74,074.00. It is particularly gratifying to note that Richard Winn achieved this feat during a prolonged downturn in the economy. Please consider contributing to this years campaign to help us meet or exceed last years donations. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. All gifts are tax-deductible. July 31st is the last day that Spirit Fund donations for the 2011-2012 year may be accepted. For information about the Spirit Fund, please contact Mrs. Lanna McMeekin at 635-5494, ext. 206 or one of the following board members: Mrs.Vicki Maass, Chairman, Mrs. Marcia Bonds, Mrs. Michele Boulware, Mr. Hank Harrison, Mrs. Nanette Hawkins, Mr. John Martin, Mrs. Karla Pope, Mr. John Tate, or Mrs. Lori Waldrep. Headmaster for the Day We are in the process of interviewing prospective teachers for the vacancies and will share once all personnel decisions are made for next year. A summer e-mail will be sent to keep you updated. The hours during which office staff members are available to assist parents during the summer are as follows: Beginning the week of May 29 and continuing through August 3, the office will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 A. M. until 2:00 P. M. Also, appointments may be made for assistance at other times. While we work hours other than those stated above, time is spent preparing for the new school year and except during the specific times set for office hours, we may not be accessible without advance notice. Also, because vacations are taken during the summer, calling in advance is strongly recommended if you need a specific person. Best wishes for a wonderful and safe summer. Again, thank you for your continued support of RWA. There were many positive comments about the auction, including the announcement of the final amount profited. Auction 2012 is contributing $75,832.62 to support instruction, athletics and the facility. WOW! Again, thank you to the auction committee and to everyone who attended the auction and/or supported this event in any way. That the 2011-2012 school year is close to an end is hard to believe. Time just seems to fly! Fortunately, when the summer ends and the 2012-2013 school year begins, most of the RWA staff members and students plan to return. We will miss Mrs. Lily Caldwell, who is retiring, and Miss Emily Horowitz, who has accepted a job in one of the Lexington school districts. As you know, Mrs. Thames resigned in March to move to Charleston with her husband. We are happy that Mrs. Caldwell will still be found occasionally at RWA next year; she agreed to substitute when available. Please join me in wishing Mrs. Caldwell much happiness in her retirement and in wishing our other teachers who are not returning much success in their new positions. Each of these individuals has contributed to RWA in his/her own unique way and will be missed. Also, please join me in thanking those individuals who are returning to RWA. Their commitment to our school for another year is greatly appreciated.

In general, on exam days students are expected to arrive at school by 8:10 A. M. and must remain in class and at school through the entire time designated for exams (i. e. through 12:00 Noon dismissal bell). However, if a student in grades 9-11 is exempting an exam, he/she does not need to (but certainly may) attend school during the time period for the exempted exam. Written parental permission is required for the student not to attend that period. Written permission should be sent to school by Thursday, May 17. Parents are requested to clearly state in the note the specific date(s) and time(s) a student will not be on campus. Again, thank you for your cooperation with this request. The request is to help us assist you regarding your childs safety and appropriate supervision. (Note: Students finishing exams before the exam period ends must remain in class. Early dismissals from exams are not allowed for students in grades 7-11 on these dates.) From the Office of Student Services The University of South Carolina will offer the Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series, a summer academic camp for scholastically talented rising 6th - 12th graders. USC will also offer SAT/ACT Test Prep Summer Institutes at USC Campuses across the state. For more information, visit www.saeu.sc.edu/testing or email testprep@mailbox.sc.edu or call 803-772-9444. Clemson University offers a number of academic summer camp sessions for middle and high school students. To learn more, please visit www.clemson.edu/summer-scholars or call 864-8781041. Senior Exams: May 16, 17, 18 Seniors (and selected Junior Marshals) will take exams on May 16, 17, and 18 according to the following schedule: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 Exams for First Period Classes: 8:15-10:10 A. M. Exams for Second Period Classes: 10:25 A. M.-12:20 P. M. Thursday, May 17, 2012 Exams for Third Period Classes: 8:15-10:10 A. M. Exams for Fourth Period Classes: 10:25 A. M.-12:20 P. M. Friday, May 18, 2012 Exams for Fifth Period Classes: 8:15-10:10 A. M. Exams for Sixth Period Classes: 10:25 A. M.-12:20 P. M. A number of senior students/selected junior marshals will be exempting one or more exams. Students only need to attend school during the time scheduled for an exam they are required to take. Students involved in exams on these dates should report to school no less than 10 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time and may leave school campus upon completing their exams. (For example, a student who finishes an exam prior to 10:10 A. M. or 12:20 P. M. may leave campus when he/she completes his/her exam). However, any late arrival, early dismissal, or non-attendance due to exam exemptions on May 16, 17, and 18 (meaning a student is not here consistently from 8:10 A. M. until 12:23 P. M.) requires written permission from parents. Please check with your child regarding his/her exam schedule and send a note to school by Monday, May 14 specifying permission for any late arrivals, early dismissals, or non-attendance. Please be very clear regarding all dates and/or times. Thank you for your cooperation. Communicating your awareness of your childs time on and off campus is a safety precaution. Criteria for exam exemptions for seniors and selected junior marshals are located on page 32 of the current Parent/Student Handbook. Should you have questions about the criteria, please check with one of your childs teachers or call the school office.
