Network Access

Network Access from Student Halls of Residence


Aberystwyth University provides a high speed network connection to all student rooms, allowing access to learning resources, email and the internet free of charge. Each student room is equipped with a network wall socket providing a 100mb network connection. Computers can be connected to this using an RJ45 network cable.

Equipment needed to connect to the Halls network


1. A computer running one of the following operating systems: Windows 2000, XP, Vista or Windows 7 Apple Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) or higher Linux with the 802.1x supplicant installed 2. A computer with an Ethernet Network Card installed 3. An RJ45 UTP network cable (cables available for 2 on campus)

Wireless network access:


The University also provides a wireless network which is accessible from all academic areas and a large proportion of social and non-residential areas. For wireless access you will need a computer running one of the operating systems listed above with a Wireless Network Interface card 802.11b/g installed.

Windows Updates: You should make sure your operating system is up to date. Windows Vista / Windows 7: Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update Windows XP / 2000 Open an internet explorer window Click on Tools from the menu bar and click on windows update Click on express install You should install any critical or security updates listed, restart your PC and check again until there are no more updates available N.B. Antivirus Software
Up to date Antivirus software is also an Essential requirement. The University uses Sophos Antivirus software and has a license agreement which allows students to install, update and use it for free. If you have Antivirus software (eg Norton, McAffe, AVG etc) already on your PC please check it is up to date. If it does not have the latest virus definitions you will not be properly protected. N.B. Only install one antivirus program on your PC at a time as multiple programs can conflict causing many problems. A Stunet Setup CD with further information and full setup instructions will be given to all residents on arrival.
