Oenological Patron Saints

St. Vincent of Saragossa Feast: January 22 Born: circa 250 Died: 304 St. Vincent was born in Huesca, Spain. He is one of the great deacons of the Church. St. Vincent suffered martyrdom in 300 A.D. for his defense of Christianity. He is the Patron Saint of Vintners and Wine Growers. St. Amand of Maastricht Feast: February 6 Born: 589 Died: 679 Amand of Maastricht lived in Bourges, France, as a hermit for nearly 15 years before he started converting non-believers to the Christian faith. Because Amand took his message as far as his feet would carry him, never staying longer than necessary in one location, never establishing a home for himself, he is known as the Patron Saint of Hotel Keepers. He is also the Patron Saint of Vintners. St. Gratus of Aosta Feast: September 7 Born: Unknown Died: September 7, c. 470 AD Gratus is the patron saint of Aosta and of Vineyards. St. Morand of Cluny Feast: June 3 Born: Unknown Died: circa 1115 Morand is the Benedictine Patron of Wine Growers. He was born

into a noble family near Worms, Germany, and was educated at the cathedral school. Ordained, he made a pilgrimage to Compostela, Spain, and entered the Benedictines at Cluny. About 1100, Morand was sent to lower Alsace at the request of Count Frederick Pferz, who had just restored St. Christopher Church at Altkirch. Morand became the counts counselor and was revered for his miracles. He is Patron of Wine Makers because he endured one Lent by eating only a bunch of grapes.
