QUALITY CONTROL IN TEXTILES

1) A random sample of 33 machines were selected and the machine stoppages / day was determined. The data are as follows : 9 8 7 4 8 6 8 8 7 10 8 10 6 7 7 8 9 6 5 8 5 6 8 7 8 5 5 8 7 6 6 4 5

Test the null hypothesis ( population mean = 5 stoppages) versus the alternate hypothesis that population mean is not equal to 5 at the level of significance ( 0.05 ). Compute the value of the test statistics and compare it with the critical value ( 0.05 ).

Solution : Z Test, Null hypothesis ( miu = 5 ) Alternate hypothesis ( miu not 5 ) Standard deviation of the stoppages = 1.6005 Variable stoppages N Mean Standard Deviation Standard Error Mean 33 6.897 0.279 6.81 The computed value of the test statistic is Z = 6.897 5 / 0.279 = 6.81 , the critical values are +/- 1.96 and the Null Hypothesis is rejected. At 95% confidence limit the values are ( 6.351 , 7.443 )

Assume that the diameter of 300 packages is 68 cm and the standard deviation is 3 cm. if 80 samples consisting of 25 packages each are obtained the what is the expected mean and standard deviation of the resulting sampling distribution of means if the samples were done a) with replacement and b)without replacement.

Solution : The no of samples of size 25 that can be obtained from a group of 3000 packages with and without replacement 3000 are 3000^25 and C25 which is larger than 80.
a) b)

x = = 68 cm and standard deviation = 3 / (25)1/2 = 0.6 x = 68 cm and standard deviation = 3/(25)1/2( 3000-25 / 3000-1)1/2 Which is very slightly less than 0.6 cm and thus for all practical purposes it is considered the same as in the sampling with replacement.

3) The standard deviation of the weights of a very large population of packages is 10 lb. Sample of 200 packages each are drawn from whole of the population and standard deviation of length of each sample is calculated. Find the a) mean and b) the standard deviation of the sampling distribution. Solution : We can consider that sampling is either from an infinite population or with replacement from a finite population.
a)

The mean of the sampling distribution of standard deviation is sigma = 10.0 lb The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of standard deviation is s = 10 / (2N)1/2 = 10/ (400) 1/2 = 0.50 lb.

b)

4) Two yarn counts are measured as 27.3s and 15.6s with standard deviations of 0.16s and 0.80s respectively. Determine mean and the standard deviation of a) the sum and b) the difference of the yarn counts

Solution : c1+c2 = c1+ c2 = 27.3 +15.6 = 42.9s c1+c2= (

c1-c2 2 c1

2 1/2 c2

= [(0.16)2 + (0.08)2]1/2= 0.18s

= c1 - c2 = 27.3 15.6 = 11.7s

c1-c2 = (c12 - c22)1/2 = 0.18s

5) A machine has produced yarns of diameter of 0.05 cm. to determine whether the machine is in proper working order, a sample of 10 yarns is chosen for which the mean thickness is 0.053 cm and the standard deviation is 0.003 cm. test the hypothesis that the machine is in proper order using significant limits a) 0.05 b)0.01. Solution : Null hypothesis: = 0.050 Alternate hypothesis : 0 is not equal to 0.050 thus its a two tailed test t = [0.053 0.050/0.003]*3 = 3.0 a) For a two tailed test at 0.05 significance level for the interval at this confidence limits and degree of freedom = 9 is in the interval -2.26 to =2.26. Since t = 3.00 thus null hypothesis is rejected. b) For a two tailed test at 0.01 significance level for the interval at this confidence limits and degree of freedom = 9 is in the interval -3.25 to 3.25. Since t = 3.00 thus null hypothesis is accepted at 0.01 level.
