THE HUNTER
Te Jet and I have been hanging out together for nearly three
years now. For most of this time we have been very, very regular
in our walks through the woods. Also, during this period, Te
Jet has been a regular visitor to the ofce, so I have had an
opportunity to observe him in very diferent circumstances.
When hunting in the woods, Te Jet, relies almost entirely on
his nose, keeping his head to the ground and seldom looking
around (just like the missus). Tis is one reason why he missed
seeing a bunny rabbit tearing down the woods road the other
day, although he did pick up the scent as we arrived at that
spot on the road. His success in hunting partridge is terrible.
In almost every case, he saunters along with nose to the ground
until without warning the bird takes fight, ofen without him
even noticing.
Te one animal that Te Jet regularly pursues are the squirrels!!
Te problem, is his pursuit looks more like a 649 Happy Dance
and the whole event appears more like a Hey!! Come back here
and play with me!!
In conclusion, if Te Jet and I are ever stuck out in the woods
for a week or two, our only hope of survival will be my hunting
skills and not his.
Out side of the woods, however, Te Jet is absolutely awesome
as a Domestic Hunter. He has staf at the ofce virtually lining
up to give him treats. A visit to Grammy usually scores a doggy
treat and an apple. Te reason for his success in domestic
hunting, versus his woods hunting is that he uses his eyes
instead of his nose!! Sitting quietly, while staring at victims with
big brown eyes is a sure fre way to
score treats from all but the most
heartless human, such as myself.
So we have made a deal, when in the
woods I will do the hunting for both
of us, but if we are ever penniless on
the streets of Hampton, he will take
over all of the hunting duties. I am
expecting that with our combined
skills, that neither of us will miss too
many meals!! 800

Vote Dr. Erik F.C. Klein
For the Regional Health Authority
Elections for Horizon Health May 14th, 2012
(held as part of the municipal elections in Saint John, KV, Hampton, and Sussex)
Have you read about Erik?
Dr. Erik Klein is a chiropractor who practices in
offices between Hampton and St. Stephen. Dr.
Klein is running for the RHA board position to
promote preventative healthcare policies and
health promotion over the current band-aid
solutions that are failing.
Dr. Klein lives and breathes health, wellness, and
dedication, while our current system is built on
a bloated bureaucracy that refuses to budge.
Dr. Erik Kleins out of office healthcare experience includes being the team
chiropractor for the Saint John Mill Rats Professional Basketball team, the Chief
Medical Officer for the 2013 IFAF World Womens Football Championship and
the Medical Guidelines Co-ordinator for the National Basketball League of
Canada. Dr. Klein is also the NB Record holder in the 60m masters sprint. He
practices what he preaches and wellness is always a professional focus.
How do we fix this problem with healthcare?
We choose healthcare over bureaucracy
Addressing integrative family practice programs such as family
care teams.
Yielding to the research and better utilizing Nurse Practitioners.
We better engage home-care practitioners to get transitional
seniors out of acute care beds.
We use mid-stream triage programs to better identify surgical
candidates to cut wait times.
We purchase 3T MRIs for SJ and Moncton, and one 1.5T for up
north. We dont require any others and the savings pays.
We utilize dieticians better for the general population.
We DONT elect professional politicians who held the reins and chose not to fight for
peoples health.
We go to www.thetownchiropractor.blogspot.com to get more information!

aND lEaD Us NoT INTo TEMPTaTIoN!
Afer the life giving rains that we were blessed with in late April
the gardens are of to a rollicking start and the plant outlets are
bursting with an amazing variety of perennial plants. All very
exciting and enticing but, be warned! Most of these will have
been raised in an unheated but protective, covered environment.
Tis means care has to be taken to harden them of, an extra
cool night or blustery wind could easily destroy them; the best
method is to expose them to the elements on days that are fairly
cloudy, still and mild, increasing the time spent outside a little
each day until they become sturdy. Care needs to be taken to
insure that they dont dry out or become waterlogged by too
much juice!
Avoid purchasing annuals no matter how attractive the price,
there will be a possibility of frost until afer the full moon on June
4
th
. Keeping them healthy for a prolonged period can be time
consuming, its better to wait a couple of weeks and concentrate
on the many gardening jobs that need attention.
Chief among these is the spring pruning, by now the rose
bushes have leafed out and pruning out the dead wood while
the leaves are small is easy to do without damaging the bushes.
All dead wood should be trimmed back to the frst really healthy
leaf buds, making sure that the pruners are sharp; a ragged cut
is an invitation to the pests that cause disease. Te Forsythia
has fnished its spectacular display and a pruning with an eye
on the overall shape that you would like to see is in order. One
great virtue of them is, that a new plant can be produced simply
by taking a low growing branch and burying it into the ground
with a small rock on top to anchor it, by the end of summer it
will have rooted and can be planted in a new location.
Deer are again on the rampage and favorite among the early
diners are the day lilies. Any smelly concoction will help to ward
them of, 1 to 9 parts ammonia with water and a little added
oil and soap; a mixture of beaten egg with powdered milk, oil
and soap; granulated garlic with egg, soap and oil. Tese can be
concocted fairly cheaply, best sprayed on a still, dry day at a time
when you can bung your clothes into a washing machine and
head for the shower. Te commercially manufactured Bobbex
seems to have been quite successful.
Good Luck and happy gardening. 805

GIVE THE GIFT OF GREEN FOR MOTHER'S DAY
Mom may appreciate
chocolate or flowers.
But for children who
want to offer her some-
thing a little more spe-
cial -- especially for
their eco-conscious
moms -- there are a
number of different gift
options to make Mom's
big day as eco-friendly
as it is enjoyable.
An eco-friendly gift for Mom is a gift that
keeps on giving. When you jot down your
gift idea list, think about adding these
"green" gifts.
Make a basket of gardening gear. Garden
plants and supplies are perhaps the
greenest gifts to give Mom. Plants are so
plentiful and varied that there are bound to
be ideal flowers or greenery for every
mother's tastes. Compile different
gardening essentials, such as seeds or
seedlings, organic soil mix, mulch,
all-natural compost, and a few different
planting containers. You can also include
gardening gloves and ergonomic tools
made of recycled materials. Finish the gift
with the inclusion of a book that describes
different garden designs and gives tips for
beginners.
Purchase eco-friendly kitchen items. It
may be a major faux pas to give Mom an
appliance or a new vacuum for Mother's
Day. However, if your mother is an avid
cook or baker, she may appreciate some
new mixing bowls or utensils made from
recycled materials. If Mom is the
consummate entertainer, get her new glass
tumblers and sipping straws made from
recycled glass. They are perfect for serving
cocktails and outdoor entertaining.
Select organic fruits and flowers.
Companies like www.organicbouquet.com
can assemble a bouquet made from
responsibly grown flowers or even a
wreath for a wall or door. They also have
food gifts, from organic fruits to nuts.
Dine at a local restaurant. Many families
take Mom out for a meal on her special
day. To make the experience eco-friendly,
select among restaurants that are close to
home in the area. Explore the possibilities
of restaurants that may serve foods made
with local, organic ingredients. If you
cannot find such a restaurant, do not
worry, just choose a local establishment to
conserve fuel.
Pay for a car tune-up. Improving the gas
mileage on Mom's car is one gift that can
be environmentally friendly. According to
the United States Department of Energy,
keeping a car in shape can help save
money and improve fuel economy. Fixing
a serious maintenance problem, such as a
faulty oxygen sensor, can improve Mom's
gas mileage by as much as 40 percent.
Also, be sure to have her car tires properly
inflated. She can be losing gas mileage by
0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in all four
tires. Getting an oil change with the
recommended grade of motor oil is
another gas mileage improvement
measure.
Pamper mom with organic products. What
mom doesn't enjoy a little pampering from
time to time? You can treat your mother to
a spa experience at home by assembling a
basket full of organic shampoo,
conditioner, massage oils, bath salts, and
any other organic spa items you can find.
Spend the day outdoors. Most moms
cherish any gift from their children,
whether lavish or simple. A nice,
eco-friendly gift is to spend time together.
Research local parks or hiking trails and
plan a day where you both commune with
nature. Or even head to the seaside for a
relaxing day. Explore the landscape and be
on the lookout for birds and washed up
treasure from the sea. Plan to finish the
day with a homemade, picnic lunch.

Whatever the motivator, shopping lifts spirits and is
good for the soul. It makes people feel better about them-
selves and their place in the universe. It is a form of therapy.
Whether it is buying something to wear for a special
evening out, purchasing a day at the spa, buying something
for the interior or exterior of your home or buying a gift for
someone special, shopping can restore your inner peace.
Shopping in its many forms offers almost endless
scenarios for enjoyment and self-realization.
Shopping is also an activity that allows women to connect
with one another. Studies show that when two women shop
together, they invest more of their time in the actual process
of shopping. They talk, advise, suggest and consult to their
heart's content, hence the long time in the store. It's a social
activity that can result in bonding. When shopping is
wrapped around a meal, there's time for disclosure.
Women tend to boost each other's egos in this environ-
ment, making the activity even more positive & pleasur-
able.
Since people associate the arrival of spring with a renewed
sense of energy, it is a wonderful time for revamping a
health and beauty regimen. After months of cold dry air
outside and warm dry air inside resulting in moisture loss
from both the hair and skin, shopping for ways to look and

Everything from massage therapy to reexology can be tried in an effort to feel rejuvenated. These
forms of therapy can also alleviate pain, reduce anxiety and may even improve immune system function.
Following in the footsteps of Eastern cultures, many people are nding meditation, yoga and Tai Chi are
effective at calming the mind and the body yet the modern forms of exercise, such as Zumba and Pilates,
energize the body.
Celebrate the exuberance of feeling better with your spouse by making a date night as memorable as
possible. Whether a date night means an evening on the town or a dinner at home, dressing up in that
special gown, using soft lighting or candles, enjoying some wine and relaxing music can bring peace
and contentment to both you and your spouse.

S
tress has become a daily part of people's
lives. Despite its detriments to health and
well-being, stress seems to be something most
people can't shake. Increasing the
number of relaxation tools around
the house may prove effective at
reducing stress.
Gardening is one of the
ways many people relax.
Although it can be arduous
when it comes time to
making the exterior of your
home beautiful, it doesn't
matter if there are rolling
hills or a single container
lled with soil in which to
plant. Although many gardening
professionals present plans for
larger-scale gardens, it's possible to create
smaller-scale options that require a great deal
less maintenance and upkeep.
Hanging baskets and raised containers can
add height and free up more oor space for
gardens.
Those who have a large space may want to
consider breaking the landscape
down into smaller quadrants;
otherwise, the garden can seem
unruly. Use hardscape
materials, such as mulch,
rocks, boulders, and slate to
break up the greenery.
Color is another thing to
consider; gardeners with
smaller spaces may want to
think about keeping gardens
mainly monochromatic, which
will look more cohesive.
Cool-colored owers and plants will
help make a garden look larger.
Warm-colored owers will add impact and
could create a cozier feel.

Another form of stress release is exercise. Having a stationary bike or elliptical trainer in your home
or nearby gym can entice you to get moving. Exercise releases endorphins into the body, which can
banish the blues. Ten minutes of brisk walking raises the mood and increases the energy level for up to
two hours after the walk.
Household chores achieve the same uplifting feeling whether it is due to a sense of accomplishment in
having the work done or the joy of looking at a newly replaced oor or bathroom. Most women will say
that shopping for home renovations is as blissful as shopping for new shoes.
A pool, much like a hot tub, can foster feelings of relaxation. Swimming combines the stress-relief
of water with the benets of exercise. Daily swimming can shake off the stress of work and family life.
Water, heat and massage therapy as provided by a hot tub can alleviate many of the body strains caused
by stress. Heat also dilates blood vessels to increase blood ow to sore or damaged tissue. Add the gentle
massage from spa bubbles and the body is relaxed. This, in turn, can help turn off the mind and facilitate
feelings of ease

PENPal?
Does this concept still exist in todays hurry-up world of instant
communications? For those who may not be familiar, Pen
pals (or penpals or pen friends) are people who regularly write to
each other, particularly via postal mail. A penpal relationship is
ofen used to practice reading and writing in a foreign language,
to improve literacy, to learn more about other countries and life-
styles, and to make friendships. - Wikipedia.
I had several penpals as a kid. A couple in Newfoundland,
one in Nova Scotia (those seemed so far away at the time), but
the two I found most interesting were in Germany. As a young
teen, I was amazed at how well they could communicate in
their second language when my French wasnt much beyond
bonjour. Even more, I was intrigued at how diferent their lives
were from mine, and yet how much was the same. In those dark
ages before Internet this was a glimpse into a culture outside my
rural New Brunswick experience. Gradually, as we all grew older
and our lives became busier with friends, the letters dwindled
and then stopped.
My mother on the other hand has penpals with whom she has
corresponded for decades. A number of years ago she even had
the opportunity to meet with one or two in Australia when she
travelled there. Which brings me to . . . One of her Australian
penpals has a niece who would love to have a penpal in Canada.
I have very little info, but will share what I have and if someone
is so inclined send along a letter and see what happens. Not all
friendships (whether in person or long-distance) will fourish,
but some may last a lifetime.
Her name is Judy Orman and her address is 306 Murray Rd,
Nathalia, VIC 3638, Australia. A little Google search revealed
Nathalia is a little town in the southeast of Australia, not too
far from Melbourne. Her interests are bushwalking (doesnt
that sound cool), birds, photography,
butterfies, moths, art and U3A. Yep, thats
what it says, U3A. Back to the internet.
U3A stands for University of the Tird
Age. Tere are U3As all over the world.
U3A is a learning cooperative of older
people, which encourages healthy ageing
by enabling members to share many
educational, creative and leisure activities.
What is the Tird Age? Te Tird Age
refers to the period of time afer the First
Age of childhood and the Second Age of
employment and parental responsibility,
ofen called the age of active retirement. A
U3A is a university in the original sense of
the word: a community of people devoted
to learning and its members are in the Tird
Age. (http://www.u3anetvic.org.au/About.

to start one here, Im in! You now know
everything I know on this request. Got
