DIAGNOSIS Risk for infection may be related to environmental exposure.

INFERENCE Smoke Poisoning or chemical injury from the inhalation of combustion by products especially hydrogen cyanide, are produced when plastics or home furnishings are burned. Cyanide binds to the cytichrome system, thereby inhibiting cell metabolism and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production that disrupts cell function.

PLANNING After 4 hours of nursing interventions, the patient will verbalize understanding of individual exposure and risk factors and identify interventions to prevent and reduce risk of infection.

INTERVENTION INDEPENDENT Observe risk factors for occurrence of infection environmental exposure, compromised host, traumatic injury, loss of skin integrity. Observe for signs and symptoms of infective agent and systemic infection.

RATIONALE Understanding nature and properties of infection agents and individuals exposure determines choise of therapeutic interventions. Initial symptoms of some agents include fever, fatigue, joint aches, and headaches similar to influenza. First-line defense to limit spread of infections. Reduce the risk of crosscontamination to staff, visitors, and other clients. Prevents exposure of client to further infection and may reveal additional cases. Premature discontinuation of treatment when client beins to feel well may
