" . he'll cut my allowance! Why, today I wouldn't
dream of paying prices like the ones on these old bills!"
D
o you remember things you bought,
say, ten years ago-how inferior they
were to today's goods in looks, in the service
they gave? But do you remember, too, how
much more those articles cost then?
ince 1929, the average price of an elec-
tric refrigerator has come down from $310
to $175, an electric washer from $112 to
$72; a 100-watt lamp from 35 to 15 cents.
And hundreds of other manufactured
articles today perform better and cost less
to operate than the older models.
Why? Because during these ten years
American industry has improved its prod-
ucts, learned to make them less ex-
pensive so that more people can own
them. That is why the American worker's
real wage-his ability to buy the things
he wants-is higher today than in 1929.
Each reduction in the cost of the products
he buys is, in effect, a "raise" for every
purchaser.
General Electric scientists and engineers,
by finding new ways for electricity to serve
the needs of industry, are helping to pro-
vide us with still MORE GOODS FOR
MORE PEOPLE AT LESS COST.
GB research and engineering have saved the p"blic from ten to 07le h"rJdred dollars
for every dollar they have eartled for General Electric

RECORDED MUSIC
**tt Legende, Op. 17, Wieniawski: (Victor
15423, $2.00). Wieniawski, first a virtuoso and
then a composer, has no prestige at all in the
second capacity. Nevertheless, his Legende is
well built and frequently moving, melodious,
and harmonically apt. Yehudi Menuhin plays
the violin part well, Georges Enesco conducts
with understanding and the Orchestra of the
Colonne Concerts of Paris follows without
much finesse.
VOCAL
***tt Rhapsody for Contralto, Male Chorus
and Orchestra, Op. 53, Brahms: (Victor AI-
bumS55, $6.00). This is the Alto Rhapsody, a
favorite of the composer. Marian Anderson's
great voice and musical sense, the well-
trained University of Pennsylvania Choral
Society and the Philadelphia Orchestra di-
rected by Eugene Ormandy unite in a nota-
ble performance of Brahms's dark setting af
Goethe's Harzreise im Winter, eclipsing the
disks by Sigrid Onegin. Three familiar
Brahms songs are included in the album, with
the Philadelphia Orchestra accompanying
instead of a piano; but the accompaniments
are unobtrusive and acceptable.
**tt Deutsche Volkslieder, Volume I, Brahms:
(Columbia Album X-128, $3.50). nine
songs in the album are sung in a pleasant bari-
tone with a disarming naturalness by Ernst
Wolff who accompanies himself at the piano.
A valuable addition to the Brahms repertory
and one of Wolff's superior efforts.
***U Doubt, Glinka,. and Night (folksong):
(Victor 15422, $2.00). One of the finest rec-
ords ever made by the late Fyodor Chaliapin.
***tt Haensel und Gretel: Abendsegen,
Volklied and Lied des Sandmaennchens,
Humperdinck: (Victor 1948, $1.50). A lit-
tle masterpiece of vocal taste, tone, and con-
trol. - In the Abendsegen the record repro-
duces Elisabeth Schumann in both parts
simultaneously, a procedure which guar-
antees the balance of the duet as the em-
ploymentof two reciprocally envious prime
donne could hardly do. But it is a pity a
