The I-V characteristic curve of an electrolytic cell passes through the points M (1A;5V) and N(2A;4V). A. Plot this curve to the scale:
I axis : 1unit 1A V axis :1unit 1V

B. Determine the following characteristics of the electrolytic cell referring to the graph: 1. Its e.m.f. E. 2. Its theoretical short-circuit current Isc. 3. Its internal resistance r. C. We connect across the terminals of this cell an ohmic conductor of resistance R=11. 1. Draw a circuit diagram showing the connections made. 2. Represent, on the same graph of part A, the I-V characteristic curve across this ohmic conductor. 3. The point of intersection between the two I-V characteristic curves has an abscissa I. This value represents the intensity of the electric current I delivered by the electrolytic cell. Justify why? 4. We replace the ohmic conductor used in part C by another one of resistance R<R. A new electric current of intensity I flows in the circuit. Is I greater or less than I? Justify your answer by graphical observation and without calculation.

Second Question: -Applying Knowledge

Observe attentively the schematic diagram and the I-V characteristic curve of two electric components D1 and D2 as shown below.

Part A: 1. The two electric components D1 and D2 are considered as Ohmic conductors. Why? 2. Calculate in SI unit the slope of each straight line. What do these values represent? 3. When k is closed, the ammeter indicates 100 mA. Determine graphically the potential differences U1 and U2 across the terminals of D1 and D2. 4. Deduce from part 3 the potential difference UG across the terminals of the generator and its e.m.f. E. Part B: 1. Calculate the total Joules power dissipated in the series grouping of D1 and D2. 2. D1 and D2 are grouped now in parallel across the terminals of the generator G which is delivering the same UG calculated in part 4. Calculate the new Joules power dissipated in the parallel grouping of D1 and D2. 3. Conclude from the answers obtained in the previous parts (1 and 2) a property of the dissipated power.
