Products with special functions

What follows is a new section entitled Products with special functions in which FSB brakkets all products that extend our range in that they are farreaching innovations or else are the upshot of specific market demand. We kick off with our backlit cylinder rose. Light has always been integral to architecture. It renders spaces utilisable and makes it easier for a person to find their way around. We, too, have now veritably seen the light: we have integrated an LED into our roses so you can make a beeline for the door in the dark. The LED rose is to be found opposite. We then move on to EZK the electronic access control (EAC) system that FSB has developed in collaboration with the Westphalian family-run business Winkhaus. Besides boasting the system benefits of Winkhaus BlueChip technology, EZK is also set apart by its being the first sector-wide EAC hardware system to be very winningly designed with roses. It can be found on Pages 28 bis 31. A further hardware innovation, one espousing the architectural philosophy whereby technical and functional elements should not protrude if possible, is the proven FSB commercial hardware fitted with a compensating bearing in a variant featuring flush handles and cylinder roses. This product features an ingenious assembly technique and can be used in combination with any lever handle design. Owing to the need to cut away material on the door, this is really a job for commercial ventures. For more on this, please turn to Page 32. There follows a childproof knob handle. Here, we were looking for a way round the practical but rather makeshift option of aligning the lever handle vertically so as to keep it out of reach of tiny tots. We came up with a good idea, which is set out on Page 33. Covered on the same page is a particularly hard-wearing set of indicating furniture that incorporates an emergency release facility and is primarily conceived for use in schools, nursery schools and old peoples homes. The trend towards flush fittings is likewise catered to by means of specially cut backplates and roses in solid stainless steel (thicknesses of 3 and 5 mm). FSB is able to cut backplates to a wide variety of shapes and designs. We are starting with a range of narrow angular and arched backplates as well as angular roses with visible fixing. There are a great many more feasible options, though. Test us with your own bespoke designs! The existing range is to be found on Pages 34-36. We have developed a set of barrier-free hardware specifically for homes for the elderly and infirm in which the lever handle is positioned 200 mm lower than usual, allowing it to be reached more easily by wheelchair users in particular. The hardware is also a prime candidate for renovation work, since it can be effortlessly combined with existing locks (as itemised in DIN 18251). Details on Page 37. Next up are special window handle designs that have their origins in facade systems such as curtain walls, new profile systems or, indeed, recurrent window designs. We supply window handles of reduced depth or with flat roses for use on box-type windows with cranking for top-hinged sash windows with casement fasteners for centre-hung sash windows FSB offers a wide range of concept solutions that can be supplied in combination with almost any window handle model. A few examples of such window handles are shown on Pages 38 and 39. Rounding off the section is a selection from our now quite varied offering for prisons and psychiatric hospitals. Key features of these hardware solutions for doors and windows are their resilience to vandalism and the way they are designed to prevent suicides. The models presented here are but part of a far more extensive range of such products that reflect the very diverse nature of the security and safety concepts adopted by the operators of these institutions. FSB has repeatedly come up with dedicated solutions for such purposes in the past and is now putting its know-how at your disposal. A number of the products are shown on Pages 40 and 41. We will be only too pleased to send you a copy of the more detailed JVA/Forensik product digest upon request.

The most compelling product innovations often arise out of the most obvious of ideas. You are sure to be familiar with the following situation from your own experience: you tentatively grope your way towards the door in the dark and then have your work cut out locating the keyhole or handle. Theres just got to be a way of getting a handle on this problem, as the saying goes. Light sets the scene and is at the same time functional: it renders spaces usable and is an excellent means of making it easier to find your way around in them. This applies to no less a degree to LED technology, which makes for completely new levels of miniaturisation. It has been superbly put to effect in our LED roses: these emit a tidy light that will guide you safely and surely to the door by means of a built-in LED.

Our LED roses can be recommended for a great number of applications: in various colours they identify spaces with differing functions or point the way to important doors. Courtesy of LED roses its as easy as can be getting to entrances or exits safely in the dark without having to switch on the room lighting. They are a discreet aid to orientation on corridors LED roses find application wherever low levels of light suffice for a given purpose as slumber lights in a childs bedroom for instance. As a design element, they create nuanced spots of light and unobtrusively liven up entrances and exits in the dark.

A mains transformer is required for power supply purposes that can be ordered separately under product code FSB 1723 9000 8200 (SNT-ELI 0-9 W type). Up to 10 LED roses can be run off one mains transformer. The mains transformer can be fitted either in the

switch cabinet or in a flush device box. Power can be transmitted to the LED rose in a variety of ways via a contact-based current transmitter on the slamming face (eff eff) by means of concealed wiring along the door rebate on the pull side (Winkhaus, eff eff)

or openly (eff eff) - current carrying hinges The LED rose uses very little power, less than 1W per board.

EZK hardware system Areas of application

EZK electronic access control: Key to modern door operation Conventional mechanical latching systems are becoming increasingly outdated. Given the security requirements that obtain in the event of keys being mislaid or changes being made to authorisation statuses, electronically organised access control systems are now an established fact in the marketplace. We have directly combined the process of electronic identification with a mechatronic module accommodated in the most confined of spaces in the lever handle rose. At the heart of this masterpiece of precision engineering is an electronically controlled coupling element that ensures immediate operation of the lock via the door handle once positive identification has been forthcoming. The Winkhaus BlueChip technology allows the BlueChip lock cylinder to be effortlessly integrated into the EZK hardware system. This permits the lock to be operated as with mechanically closing systems by inserting and turning the key. Hence, as a means of securing external points of access it is actually possible to integrate any type of FSB hardware for instance FSB security fittings or, indeed, FSB security roses in combination with plain FSB pull handles into a fully-fledged electronic access control system on external doors.

Winkhaus + FSB We have repeatedly dared to raise our heads above the parapet in the past instead of resting on our laurels. Most recently, we have ventured onto electronic terrain admittedly not essentially our own and sought a partner that, as well being a front-runner in the electronic latching systems market, is eminently well-suited to us due to its status as a medium-sized business, the partner in question being Winkhaus Trtechnik GmbH & Co. KG from Mnster. The first fruits of this alliance take the form of the new "EZK" hardware system solution (EZK standing for electronic access control in German) marketed by Winkhaus and FSB. This hardware system combines core products by both companies: the proven Winkhaus BlueChip technology has been supplemented by a completely novel hardware solution by FSB that is adapted to the system's technology and has now been patented.

28

EZK hardware system This is how it works

Electronic access control for internal doors As well as delivering very good looking hardware with a residential feel, EZK can also be effortlessly retrofitted to existing doors. Making this possible are two components: the Winkhaus BlueChip system has been joined by a completely novel, unique and system-compatible hardware solution by FSB. The electronic identification unit comes ready-integrated into a proprietary lock cylinder. For assembly purposes, this module is simply inserted into the lock and fastened via the rose on the reverse (1). A link is established with the handle rose, the centrepiece of our system solution (2), via a cable passed through the lock mortise. A mechatronically controlled coupling device has been integrated beneath the rose base, which is just 13 mm deep, that ensures operation of the lock via the door handle as soon as positive identification has been forthcoming (3). The EZK hardware system solution by Winkhaus and FSB makes use of a passive transponder technique, i.e. the intelligence is located not in the identifying medium but in the hardware. The identifying medium is merely programmed with information regarding, for instance, the attributes of facilities or persons.

Less is more: the current architectural tendency to pare down visible materials and structures and to formally integrate technically functional elements is, for instance, manifesting itself in the form of non-rebated doors for main entrances. Comparable innovations are to be found in the most diverse of interior fitments notable examples being light switches, plug sokkets or various products for the door including concealed hinges. FSB has developed a hardware solution to suit this design trend: the flush rose.

The hardware is fitted with FSBs proven AGL compensating bearing and can also be supplied as fire safety furniture. Please note the prerequisites detailed below. Lever handle sets for flush mounting can only be specified as commercial or fire safety furniture for use in conjunction with roses 1731/1735. When ordering, please only indicate the lever handle model or, in the case of entrance door furniture, the material/finish desired using the product codes for AGL (7201) or, respectively, FS furniture (7601).

Technical prerequisites: The door must be at least 45 mm thick. With rebated doors, the position of the lock mortise needs to be borne in mind. The recess for the rose needs to be 56 mm in diameter and centred on the lock follower. The recess is to be milled out to a depth of 7 mm. For the

purpose of accommodating the lugs, bore holes 8.5 mm in diameter and at 38mm centres need to be drilled to a depth of at least 7 mm. The residual material between the bottom of the recess and the lock case is required to be stable and firm enough to ensure secure fastening without any pressure being exerted upon the lock.

Assembly: The male section of the lever handle furniture is pre-assembled for insertion into the prepared recesses. On the face of the door to which the female section is to be affixed it is first necessary to fit the base roses.

We are all familiar with the type of receptacle for tablets etc. that requires a certain amount of lateral pressure to open it so as to prevent the contents getting into the wrong hands. Parents of children up to the age of about 4 know all too well that toddlers are not necessarily halted in their tracks by, for instance, unlocked doors.

To prevent young children opening doors they have no business to be opening, parents have often hitherto resorted to lever handles pointing vertically upwards a solution that, whilst certainly achieving the desired results, is somewhat makeshift all in all. An aesthetically appealing and technically well-conceived solution provided by FSB is a knob handle with a childproof function. A special-purpose spring mechanism inside the knob prevents the knob being turned unless its top is axially displaced. This requires an exertion of around 30 Newton, equivalent to lifting around 3 kg.

The knob handle can be combined with all FSB products in which the female lever can be easily detached from the rest of the set. Typical examples are the fittings in the Design + Security series or else push-and-pull pad handles or entrance door furniture combined with single lever sets on the inside of the door. It is possible to fit the knob handle onto the existing spindle in all these cases. Bespoke solutions for the likes of hardware on narrow-frame patio doors are possible on request.

There is a demand in old peoples homes, nursing wards and often also nursery schools and schools for sturdy indicating furniture with an emergency release mechanism. A set of furniture developed by FSB specifically with such requirements in mind features an oversize thumbturn that can be safely operated by

hands that are small, shaky or weak. This thumbturn is connected on the outside with a sturdy emergency release device that can be opened by authorised persons using a special key even if there is resistance from the other side.

Cut backplates + roses

Architectural trends such as those advocating that technical or design elements be kept as flush as possible have really enlivened demand for cut bakkplates. FSB disposes over leading-edge laser production technology allowing it to manufacture almost any shape that can be represented as a vectorised file and is not larger than 1,200 x 2,500 mm in size as a cut backplate. You will find a selection of minimalist baccplates and roses as a starting point here which so we believe adhere very closely to the trend alluded to above on account of their being just 3 or 5 mm thick respectively and 35 mm wide but which are nevertheless merely intended as initial suggestions. FSB additionally offers to supply cut backplates in custom designs. Please note the technical information on Page 141 when ordering. When ordering custom designs, please first send us a dimensioned drawing. We will then furnish you with a counterdrawing for verification purposes together with a price quote. FSB supplies cut backplates and roses either with visible fixing on both sides or else visible or concealed fixing on one side (concealed fixing by means of weld-on threaded bushings that double up as reinforcement lugs) The means of support for the handle can be loose or non-detachable and involves an injection-moulded sliding bearing made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic. Backplates and roses 3 mm thick are furnished with a spacer ring in solid stainless steel in the process. Where common door thicknesses are concerned, corresponding use can be made of the FSB Stabil spindle (see manual 06|07 Page 545) for these variants. Custom Stabil spindle variants are available to order for nonstandard door thicknesses. Our Domestic Sales Service will readily answer any questions you may have on this subject.

Aluminium AluGrey Stainless steel centres 72 (WC 78 mm) concealed fixing on both sides matches backplate model FSB 1418 The demographic changes affecting society are causing the importance of barrier-free door hardware in particular to grow steadily. Such hardware is distinguished by the fact that either the handles can be reached with greater ease by wheelchair users or the key can be negotiated into the lock cylinder more easily due to the latter being located above the handle and thus being more readily accessible and visible. FSB has developed a specialpurpose door fitting for requirements of this sort that can be used on conventional doors in combination with existing locks without any need for modification.

24

The hardware comprises a special-purpose inner backplate in stainless steel with a built-in mechanism that enables the handle to be located 200 mm beneath the lock follower.

For use in combination with all FSB lever handle models Suitable for locks conforming to DIN 18250

Crossbar fitting DIN EN 1125 7980

Aluminium Stainless steel Description of function: Bevel gearing and spindle combine to convert pressure exerted on the crossbar into rotary motion acting on the lock follower. A fixed stop is fitted as a means of absorbing the requisite test forces. A spring ensures that the crossbar fitting returns to its original position once it has been operated.
