Wipro, the country's third largest IT exporter, today reported marginally-higher-thanexpected performance for the third quarter of FY 2011-12, backed by the rupee depreciation and last years company-wide restructuring. The firm declared a consolidated Q3 net profit of Rs 1,457 crore, an increase of 10 percent annually and 12 percent sequentially. The topline for the quarter grew 28 percent year-on-year to Rs 9,997 crore. Commenting on the results, Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro, said, "We continue to execute on our strategy and propel the business towards a higher growth trajectory. The overall macroeconomic sentiments continue to be uncertain and we are monitoring it closely."

The company's flagship IT services revenue for the quarter in dollar terms grew 2.2 percent sequentially 12 percent annually to USD 1,505 million. In rupee terms, its revenue grew 28 percent annually to Rs 7,608 crore. Indian Railways gets ISRO nod to use its satellite for internet in trains

Surfing the internet in trains without using data card seems to be a distinct possibility now as the Railways have got the much-awaited clearance from space agency ISRO for using the satellite for the purpose. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has given the clearance for using the frequency from KU band for using the satellite for internet, said a senior Railway Ministry official, adding it will be for the first time that internet will be operational in moving trains through satellite. Though Railways had proposed two years back to provide internet in trains, the project could not take off due to the absence of ISRO clearance. "ISRO's clearance for using frequency from satellite for internet is mandatory. Now that we have got the clearance, work on the project will commence soon," said the official.

As per the proposal, three rakes of Howrah Rajdhani will be uplinked with satellite for facilitating internet in coaches on a pilot basis. Since it is a pilot project the internet service will not be charged from the passengers, said the official. Railways have sanctioned Rs 6.30 crore for providing internet facility in Howrah Rajdhani. The combined entity resulting from the merger of India's Tech Mahindra Ltd and Satyam Computer Services Ltd may hire as many as 10,000 new employees in the current fiscal year, said Vineet Nayyar, CEO of Tech Mahindra. "We are trying to secure more efficiencies internally, we'll see how it works out, but I think it will be anywhere between five to 10,000 range," Nayyar told Reuters. The two companies together have about 75,000 employees. Tech Mahindra hired 4,413 employees in the first nine months of the last fiscal year that ended in March, while Satyam added 3,014 new staff in the same period. Tech Mahindra, a unit of Mahindra & Mahindra, bought Satyam in a governmentbacked auction in 2009 after its founder admitted to one of India's biggest accounting frauds. The long-awaited merger will create India's fifth-largest software services exporter by revenue.
