Introduction
Beginning in 1959 as Indian Oil Company Ltd., Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IndianOil) was formed in 1964 with the merger of Indian Refineries Ltd. (Estd. 1958). The corporation is a major player in the downstream oil & gas sector with a dominant share in petroleum refining, pipeline transportation, marketing and R&D. IndianOil is one of Indias popular energy brand. In 2007, IBP Co Ltd. was merged with IndianOil.

Business Operations
IndianOil has expanded its business to petrochemicals, natural gas marketing, oil exploration & production and globalisation of downstream operations. It operates through 150 administrative offices in India and three overseas. It controls 10 of Indias 19 refineries and accounts for about 40.4% share of national refining capacity. The group refining capacity is about 60.2 MMT p.a. The company owns and operates a widespread network of crude oil and petroleum product pipelines. Its pipelines network is nearly 9,300 km in length and 61.72 MMT p.a. in capacity. IndianOil operates 16,607 petrol/diesel stations, including 1,422 Kisan Seva Kendra outlets for rural customers, 6,873 bulk consumer outlets and 3,955 kerosene dealers. It operates brands like XtraCare, Swagat and Kisan Seva Kendras in the petroleum retail segment and Indane LPG, SERVO Lubricants, Autogas LPG, XtraPremium Branded Petrol, XtraMile Branded Diesel, XtraPower Fleet Card, IndianOil Aviation and XtraRewards in the energy segment. It has established expertise in the R&D segment that offers innovative products, technologies and services covering the entire gamut of downstream operations. In FY07, the company commissioned several major projects, including expansion of the capacity of its Panipat refinery from 6 to 12 MMT p.a., a world scale PX/PTA (Paraxylene/Purified Terephthalic Acid) plant at Panipat for polyester intermediates, MS (petrol) quality upgradation project at its Gujarat refinery, and the Mundra-Panipat crude oil pipeline with onshore facilities at Mundra for handling heavy crude oil imports.

Future Plans
IndianOil has investment plans of Rs 432.5 bn for the next five years. By 2011-12, the IndianOil Group, with 80 MMT p.a. refining capacity would emerge as an export-oriented hub for finished products. The pipelines network, which provides strategic logistics advantage to the marketing operations, is also set to cross the 10,000 km mark soon.
