QADUCT
Raw Polyethylene

UL181
Notes:
We developed and trademarked two types of ductwork systems marketed under the names AKDUCT (transite)
and QADUCT (above ground). These proprietary technologies were founded by CDC Enterprises, Inc. in
August, 2001. We started to manufacture and market plastic (HDPE) insulated heating and cooling ductwork in
August, 2003. From that point on, CDC Enterprises, Inc.'s goal is to engineer and manufacture all the related
fittings necessary for a complete heating and cooling supply system designed for residential, commercial, and
industrial sites. Today we are in full force production of underground and above-ground polyethylene insulated
ductwork.
AKDUCT & QADUCT provides the benefit of an air-tight and water-tight HVAC ductwork installation, which
can be pressurized more than a common duct working pressure. As a result of the ability to create a slightly
pressurized duct system, builders can now use smaller heating and cooling systems, smaller duct sizes, and
can be assured of substantially more efficient operating systems after construction is complete.
QADUCT is an energy efficient, pre-insulated duct system that is completely pre-engineered and easy to install.
It conserves energy by being air-tight and thermally efficient. It delivers improved indoor air quality. QADUCT is
manufactured using a HDPE (high density polyethylene) composite material for durability and light-weight
construction, but with a natural FR (fire and smoke retardant) filler added to enable it to pass the UL 181
regulations for above-ground ductwork applications. QADUCT is mold and mildew resistant, will not rust, will not
crack under pressure and is extremely durable.

What is AKDUCT?
Our ductwork products are classified as High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), which is a closed cell plastic
material with an additional high thermal property. It is unique to other materials because it is manufactured with
food grade plastic that is safe for humans and the environment. The material is mixed with a foaming additive
during manufacturing to achieve the density and performance parameter desired. The preformed ductwork has
the characteristic of a smooth low friction surface that is resistant to mildew, mold, and Radon; under pressure it
will not crack and is non-toxic and recyclable.
In addition, the ductwork is self-insulating, adjustable and easy to install. A thermal efficiency performance that
has been test proven equivalency to deliver effectiveness comparable to underground PVC coated spiral and
PVC ductwork wrapped in R10.

How we do it

Re-cycle
ROTOMOLDING
Rotomolding is useful in QADUCT and AKDUCT product lines. This process to create one piece seamless and stress free
with superior surface finish is here. AKDUCT products can be up to 60 inches or as small as 3 inches to create a complete
air distribution line.
Rotomolding is a method that involves the slow tumbling, heating, and melting of a thermoplastic type powder in a bi-axial
rotating mold to produce seamless, hollow plastic parts. This process is typically used to mold hollow parts, especially those
with complex and varied shapes not easily obtainable by other hollow-art processes. It is a virtually a shear-free and
pressure-free process. The wall thickness uniformity and part weight can be easily maintained. There is very little waste of
material due to scrap.
Process Steps
The Rotomolding process begins by placing a pre-measured amount of plastic material (in either liquid or powder form) in a
cavity. The mold is then closed and indexed into an oven where it and its contents are brought up to the molding
temperature. CDC Enterprises production capabilities uses multiple state-of-the-art rotational molding machines, including a
process-controlled system. As the mold is heated it is rotated continuously about its vertical and horizontal axes. This biaxial
rotation brings all surfaces of the mold in contact with the plastic material.
The mold is rotated within the oven until all the plastic material has been picked up by the hot inside surfaces of the cavity
and dandifies into a uniform layer. Rotating arms move the mold out of the oven and into the cooling chamber. Air, or a
mixture of air and water, cools the mold and the layers of molten plastic material. This cooling process continues until the part
has cooled sufficiently to retain its shape. The machine then indexes the mold to the loading and unloading station. The mold
is opened and the part removed. A new batch of material is then placed in the cavity, the mold is closed and the process is
repeated.
Injection molding
Our clamps use injection molding. This is accomplished by large machines called injection molding machines. The resin is
injected into the mold by a reciprocating screw or a ram injector. The reciprocating screw offers the advantage of being able
to inject a smaller percentage of the total shot (amount of melted resin in the barrel). The ram injector must typically inject at
least 20% of the total shot while a screw injector can inject as little as 5% of the total shot.
Extrusion molding
Our three 3" High Velocity pipes are manufactured using extrusion molding, which is a process, forcing a solid metal through
a suitably shaped orifice under compressive forces.
CDC ENTERPRISES, INC uses the hot extrusion process. In this process, a heated billet of metal is placed in a cylindrical
chamber and then compressed by a hydraulically operated ram (see illustration). The opposite end of the cylinder contains a
die having an orifice of the desired shape; as this die opening is the path of least resistance for the billet under pressure, the
metal, in effect, squirts out of the opening as a continuous bar having the same cross-sectional shape as the die opening. By
using two sets of dies, stepped extrusions can be made. The extrusion is then cooled and forms a solid shape. The tube may
be printed upon, and cut at equal intervals.

AKDUCT has several properties that make it very unique from traditional air duct materials:
Proper restraint must be used when coupling pipe ends to prevent pullout from hydraulic forces or temperature
changes.
AKDUCT HDPE length shrinks 1 inch per 100 feet of pipe length with a 10F temperature drop, but remem ber
ground temperature changes very little so it is unlikely to pull out of restrained clamp and gasket, But still pay
careful attention to installing clamp and gasket. One great advantage of underground air ducting is the constant
temperature found in earth as nature plays a role in the Thermal Mass. This is why AKDUCT out performs
conventional above ground air duct systems.
Preinstall without clamp and gasket is necessary to make sure you have the lengths and elbows correct to
trench. Once gasket has been firmly applied and had time to cure it be very difficult to remove in order to make
further adjustments.
Creep is continuous yield of material under stress. HDPE will creep if the stress placed on it gets above a
certain level (refer to ICC-PMG-1023). Follow installation instructions of 2" of pea-gravel above trench and
pipe. If great care is not taken when installing pipe in trench for use on long trunk systems, stress level can be
exceeded and fittings that work great today may fail later as the HDPE creeps. Some contractors will use a
cement slurry as a reinforcement to create a uniform cross section in areas they suspect issues.
Low coefficient of friction means HDPE is very slick", that means air flow internally is higher but for the outer
perimeter this makes clamp and gasket to rotate on the pipe or migrate along if care is not taken to press gasket
firmly around perimeter.

A manometer is a pressure measuring instrument, usually limited to measuring pressures near to atmospheric.
The term manometer is often used to refer specifically to liquid column hydrostatic instruments.
----------------------------------------------------OPTIONAL AIR TEST ASSEMBLY:
Place a bead of caulk under the air test plate.
Position air test kit over existing hole in top of plenum.
Screw down using screws provided. Caulk around outside. If not using plenum attach air test plate to end cap
and do the same pressure test. Allow caulking to dry 24 hours prior to testing.
Fill pressure gauge to 1.5 W.C. on the manometer. (Note: - .75 and +.75 is 1.5 of W.C. pressure). System
will hold 1.5 of W.C. for 5

The customer reported that in the period of time since the system modification the building comfort
has greatly improved.
This report supplies before and after data regarding system air flow comparing a conventional flex
duct system to an AKDUCT system. The unit tested is an ICP straight cool mobile home package
system with a 9.8kw electric heater. In both cases, the return is a single duct from a floor mounted
return to the cooling unit.
The supply duct splits into two supply trunks that feed chase mounted pipe supplies to the ceiling
supply trunks and registers.
The customer reports that in period of time since the system modification, the building comfort has
greatly improved. The system is reported to cycle normally as opposed to continuous operations. The
customer also reports a reduction in the power by $40 dollars per month.
