2012 FORM: 9th LESSON TOPIC: Degree of comparison of Adjectives (short adjectives) TYPE OF LESSON: introducing a new grammar structure. SKILLS INVOLVED: listening, speaking, reading, writing TEACHING TECHNIQUES: conversation, dialogue, exercises , guiding to discovery of the grammar structure COMPETENCES: by the end of the lesson the Ss will be able to: -Use the positive, comparative and superlative degrees of regular adjectives - To Identify the usage of positive, comparative and superlative degrees Activity 1 WARM-UP - 4 minutes Procedure: T enters the class greets the Ss, and then T asks if there are any absentees. The S on duty tells the absentees if there are any. T asks the Ss about their homework, first a frontal check, then individually by making a selection of the Ss that are about to read the homework and while the Ss read and translate, T checks the homework of the other Ss correcting the mistakes if any. Aims: - to verify and review the acquisition of the modal verbs Skills: speaking, reading. Interaction: T Ss, Ss-T

Activity2 Presentation of the new grammar context 5minutes Aim: -to provide for the Ss the proper information in order to assure and facilitate the acquisition of the new grammar structure. Procedure: T gives the students some sheets of paper and tells the Ss to solve the exercises number 1. Skills: speaking, reading. Interaction: T Ss, Ss-T Activity3 : Discussion and Analysis 20minutes Aim:to learn new grammar structure Skills: speaking, reading Interaction: T Ss, Ss-T Procedure: T discusses and analyses with the Ss the text from the ex 1. 1San Carlos is a big city. 2Cabanatuam City is bigger than San Carlos. 3Manila is the biggest among the three cities. What is being described in sentence no.1? (San Carlos City)

(Manila) What word is used to describe Manila? (biggest) How many are compared in sentence no.3? (three cities) The T writes on the blackboard three sentences The yellow coat is long. The red coat is longer than the yellow coat. The blue coat is the longest. - What does the underlined word long describe? (coat) - what does the underlined word longer describe? (red coat) - What does the underlined word longest describe? (blue coat compared to the red and yellow coats) The adjective bigger in sentence 2 is in the comparative degree. How is it formed? (add er) How is it used? (in comparing two nouns) The adjective biggest in sentence 3 is in the superlative degree. How is it formed? (add est) When is it used? (in comparing three or more nouns) What article is placed before it? (article the) We use the positive degree when we describe a person, animal, place or thing. This is the adjective in its simplest form. We use the comparative degree when two persons, animals, places, or things are compared. This is shown by adding er to the adjective. We use the superlative degree when three or more persons, animals, places or things are compared. This is shown by adding est to the adjective. Activity4: USING OF THE NEW THE ACQUIRED GRAMMAR STRUCTURE 10minutes Aim: to work with the new grammar structure Procedure: T gives the students some sheets of paper containing exercises with degree of comparison Skills: speaking, reading. Interaction: T Ss, Ss-T Activity5:EVALUATION 10minutes Aims: - to evaluate students work Procedure: T thanks to the students for their activity and congratulates the students which have given correct answers

Activity6: Homework 1minute - Describe your school in a short paragraph. Compare it with another school. Use adjectives in the comparative and superlative degrees.
