Ayurveda: A Traditional System of Medicine in India

Dr. B.G. Banerjee, Dr. K. Gurpreet Singh and Dr. A.K. Sinha

In a global environment of enormous health challenges medical anthropologists offer a significant and insightful understanding of traditional health systems and healing practices around the world. The authors critically examine the major issues and themes and their attendant controversies in the pursuit of medical anthropology today. Also presented in this book is a thorough assessment of a specific area of study in medical anthropologythe traditional and indigenous system of medicine in North India. As the first text of its kind, on the basis of the existing literature and a detailed field-work, it explores the full spectrum of indigenous and traditional systems of medicine in India, particularly Ayurveda. The book is likely to be useful to anthropologists, sociologists, ecologists, human geographers, nongovernmental organisations (NGO), community health functionaries, planners and others interested in the sociocultural issues pertaining to human health and illness.

Besides providing a general overview, it also touches upon the major contributions and philosophies of some eminent Indian Anthropologists in the field of applied anthropology. Furthermore, directions for the future studies for applied anthropologists have been brought into focus here. Other issues that have been covered include human growth and development, genetics, forensic anthropology, palaeoanthropology and prehistoric archaeology, researches on children, adolescents, women and the family, AIDS and sexual behavior, as well as cultural dynamics of religion, health and ecology. All these areas have had a major importance in the way anthropologists have modified and/or created new paradigms for understanding these issues. Thus, this book is a very significant contribution to applied anthropological approaches utilized in India and would be of immense use for scholars, researchers, administrators, bureaucrats, teachers from a broad range of disciplines, NGOs as well as for those who wish to increase their knowledge regarding the science of man in the service of humankind.

Anthropology and Society: Issues and Applications

General Editor: Indu Talwar Editors: Abhik Ghosh, Shalina Mehta, Krishan Sharma, Rajan Gaur, Kewal Krishan, Gayatri Pathmanathan

The most ethnographic studies on the pilgrimage focus in the sacred places rather than pilgrimage itself. The present study takes into account both these dimensions. The history of Shri Mata Mansa Devi temple is as old as other famous Shakti Sthals of India. The details of these Shakti Sthals is given in Shiva Purana. The data on various aspects relating to socio-cultural, psychological, economic and religious dimension of the pilgrims are given in this book. This book is intended to be of interest to all those who are interested to learn about pilgrims and pilgrimage, especially those in the disciplines of Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, History, Geography, Sanskrit and its allied subjects.

This is a unique volume in its content as it accomplishes the aim of offering relational study. It offers analogies of the relations between environmental degradation, microbial adaptability, and disease potency; relations between climate change, microbial adaptability, and disease virulence; relations between biome transformation, intra-andinter biome disease transmission; and relations between global warming, and the rate of disease shifting to new geographical locations. The book, therefore, assimilates the multidimensionality, and multifacettedness of the microbiosis, zoonosis, and epidemics of the Indian

Northerns Catalouge Ocean into its domain. The history, and geography of the infectious, genetic, and hereditary human diseases of the Indian Ocean have been explored comprehensively and coherently in this volume. Supplemental to this is the exploration of perennial influence of multitudinous anthropogenic subsistence strategies on disease virulence, and evolution of new, and potent diseases in the Indian Ocean. This is the most comprehensive study of its kind of disease, and epidemics of the Indian Ocean since the monumental Handbook of Geographical and Historical Pathology by August Hirsch. Many of the intricate microbial, epidemical, and medical ideas have been elaborated by utilizing most modern tools, and techniques of research. Comparatively, this is the first micro-study of microbiosis, zoonosis, and epidemics of the Indian Ocean, based on holistic, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary methodologies. Maritime trade and migration as mediums of pathogenic microbial intra-Indian Ocean transmission, Indian Ocean microbial biomes, origins, and evolution of historical diseases in early modern Indian Ocean constitute essential, and most vital inherent specificities of this research. The book is accessible to ocean scientists, Indian Ocean medical and environmental historians and scientists, maritime historians, students of multiple disciplines, and even laypeople.

Political Philosophy of Swami Vivekananda : Kalpana Mahapatra

The book addresses itself to the question does ones expression of self-consciousness consist in using language with meaning? or does one phenomenalize the use of I in expressing ones self-consciousness? How would such phenomenalizing give a common space to the speaker of I and his hearer? Again, does one ascribe a la Strawson selfconsciousness to one self? To all these questions, the book tries to find out answers from the point of view of Professor K.C. Bhattacharyyas Philosophy of the Subject. The probable answers of these questions may be useful not only for the philosophers, but intellectuals belonging to the field of literature, religion and other social sciences.

Have you seen the Vedas? While almost everyone in Europe, where a Christian majority in the population exists, has seen the Bible and almost everyone in the Middle East, where a Muslim majority exists, has seen the Koran. It is shameful that very few people in India, especially Hindus, have seen, let alone studied the holy Vedas. This book takes one to that core of Indian Philosophy, viz., the Vedas, the essential basis of why Indian culture has lasted for thousands of years amidst numerous invasions and injustices. Primarily, this treatise reveals that values were inherently associated with Indian philosophy for thousands of years, through a detailed critical analysis of the Four Puru_s"arthas that are explicit in the Vedas: Dharma, Artha, K"ama and Mok_sa. Some Western Indologists and Leftist interpreters believed that the Vedas, being primitive, do not contain the moral and spiritual values. The author of this treatise on Vedic Axiology (Vedic Philosophy of Values) has demonstrated that the seeds of the Indian Philosophy of values can be found even in the Mantra portions of the Vedas. Clearly, Indian Philosophy is not mere intellectual sport; it has a direct connection with our everyday lives and can guide us as individuals, and a society, in the proper direction. This book captures the intellectual genius and vast array of knowledge of Dr. Nigal. For example, this scholarly masterpiece contains numerous citations and references, which stretch from, but are not limited to: the different Vedas and Upani_sads, Aurobindo, Max Mller, contemporary psychologists and Western Philosophers, etc. In Max Mullers words, This book reveals: What India Can Teach Us.

For sustainable and economic development to take place in any country, it is necessary that people, both the male and female freely participate in the political process. They should be active catalyst of policy-making and social change. The process of participation is complex and it is by no means clear what is comprehensively inclusive. So it is not possible to assume that all sections of the population irrespective of caste, sex to take part effectively in the political and democratic process of the country. Salient Features Presents an overall picture of women in Panchayati raj institutions and their experience in panchayats. This brings out in concrete form the field level reality. This is something that may be appreciated intellectually by the scholars as well as policymakers. Though some studies have been done regarding panchayats in Assam, but this book is fully dedicated to women and their leadership. This is the first attempt in this field. It is an extensive and comprehensive study.

Mind is a problematic concept; sundry attempts have already been made from different view points to clear up the problem. However, in this book an endeavour has been made to deal with the problem from Buddhist point of view. An attempt has been made not only to show how Mind functions, rather the task is undertaken to reveal what Mind is. Of course, Mind is not a material object, it is a stream of consciousness, a flow of thought and the body which rooms it is, according to Buddha, an aggregate of four great elements. Mind and Mental Factors have been dealt with the materials available in the early Buddhist texts. Herein different planes of consciousness have been exposed and also explained. In this connection a variety of views about mind of different schools of Buddhist Philosophy have also been discussed. Factors are the properties or qualities of Mind, they are also in a sense psychic-atoms; they are fifty two in all, an exposition of all the factors have neither been done in conformity with theravada tradition. Also an endeavour has been made to provide the reader with a critical study of views held by both Buddhist and Western psychologists about mind and its factors. The way of consciousness in Buddhist Psychology is a journey from ethical maxims to psychological principles. Other way Buddhist Psychology is said to be a meeting point between ethics on the one hand and psychology on the other.

Especially, importance of education and provisions in the different Five Year Plans, literacy rates, dropouts at school level, Gross Enrolment Ratio in India, are also analysed in brief. The educational scenario of Orissa in general and Koraput district in particular is reflected in this book in detail. In the second part of the book, the political empowerment of women at both national and international level has been critically discussed. The political participation of women in the three-tier Panchayat Elections, Assembly Elections from the date of carving out Orissa as a separate state in 1936 is highlighted. This book, while attempting to answer this question is a unique collection of data covering comprehensively the analysis of the concepts, multifarious facets and the obstacles that come in the way of womens real development. Few strategies have been evolved to achieve it in reality. The book is a unique document for researchers, academicians, NGOs, and the government administrators to initiate campaign to bring changes, which is the need of the hour for developing/empowering the women.

In the current changing scenario of global competition, advances in technology, open economic environment and gradual shifting from muscle to machine and brawn to brain power, importance is attached to Human Resources. In this book, the concept of Human Resource Development in the national context is highlighted. HRD is the wave of the future, but in each country, HRD has different history and the potential for divergent future dimensions must be recognised. The interpretation of HRD from different points of view i.e., economist, psychologist and sociologist has been reflected. The HRD for women covers a wide range of areas like education in a wider context, political empowerment of women and other developmental programmes for women sponsored by the Government.

Rural Non-Farm Economy of Madhya Pradesh : A Case Study

Reeta Chauhan

The agriculture sector has played a central role in providing rural employment opportunities in India, but a number of factors have limited its potential for generating new jobs in the rural areas. This has contributed to restricting the job creation capacity in the agriculture sector. It is therefore, necessary to focus on a broader spectrum of the rural economy and not just on agriculture. The rural non-farm sector is a vital part which accounts for a larger proportion of total rural employment and income. In fact, these rural non farm activities are becoming the growth engines of rural development and therefore to find solution to the problems of poverty and un-employment. In this book an attempt has been made to examine the contribution of the non-farm sector across different segments of rural households. The study is based on the data collected from rural households belonging to five villages across Jabalpur district. The analysis indicates that non-farm income accounts for a significant proportion of household income in rural India with considerable variation across different income groups. The research suggests that the policy makers seeking to maximise the impact of an expanding non-farm sector on rural poverty and unemployment should concentrate on micro dimensions related to non-farm employability, as well as efforts should be focused on removing the barriers to the entry of the poor into the non-farm sector.

terms. The volume ends with an optimistic note with ideas of inclusive development under the Millennium Development Goals and Carbon Credits Sustainable Development under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change the welcome paradigm shifts in the approach to the jute sector. The effort by Sh Roul is a timely one on the eve of the observance of 2009 as International Year for Natural Fibres by the United Nations. The book is quite comprehensive with its focus on a wide range of issues pertaining to the jute agricommodity system addressed against a historical background and from macro-economic analytical perspective. The volume offers stimulating reading for those interested in the dynamics of agricultural commodity systems like jute and allied fibres. The book is expected to help sensitise national governments, international organizations and nongovernmental organizations towards the ecosustainability of jute as a natural fibre. The book can serve as an excellent reference book for post-graduate students in economics, jute and textiles management, development studies, regional development and agriculture and agromarketing.

Chhabilendra Roul

The jute commodity system as prevalent in the Indian subcontinent is a conglomeration of paradoxes. Jute was once called the golden fibre on account of its contribution to means of livelihood to millions of farmers, traders, manufacturers in the unorganized sector, mill workers in the organized sector as well scores of people employed in the service sector relating to trading, manufacturing and exports of jute and jute goods. Jute industry along with textile manufacturing provided the foundation of modern manufacturing industry in India. Simultaneously, this industry was also the fountain head of the growth of private entrepreneurship and capital in India. Most of the traditional Industrial Houses in India grew out of trading and manufacturing of jute and jute goods, coal and tea. On the other hand most of the farmers involved in cultivation of natural fibres like jute are small and marginal farmers. Without alternative avenues of gainful employment elsewhere, these millions in South Asia would be deprived of a part of their livelihood. The entire commodity chain of natural fibres is characterized by low productivity, low value addition, high volumes and low returns. The advent and discovery of mineral oil helped exploit cheap HDPE and PP polyethylene sacks, which started replacing the natural fibre based packaging materials. As a result, the jute industry got wiped out from Europe, America and the Far East. Today, it is survived in the Indian subcontinent and to a lesser extent in Brazil. The unique feature of the volume is that it focuses on the first hand experience of the policy-makers and other stakeholders in the jute commodity system, who are confronted with a dilemma of reviving a declining economic subsector. At this juncture, when there is need for a Commodity Development Strategy suitable to the ethos of a commodity like the jute fibre, the present, volumes attempts to devise such a strategy thorough analysis of the system based on authentic and up-to-date information. The Book furnishes an erudite analysis and stock-taking of the jute commodity system. This analysis points out to the fact that there is a need for a holistic, systemic approach to the problems being faced by this sector focusing on the economic exploitation of the whole jute plant; holistic research for addressing productivity and processing efficiency in the entire commodity chain of jute; and creating a network of organisations for advocacy for jute and allied fibres, which would focus on repositioning the golden fibre as sustainable and eco-friendly commodity with the help of green and sustainable development advocacy groups. The Commodity Development Strategy highlights the need for greater effort for significant degree of product diversification which would entail significant consumption of the fibre or fabric in volume

The Indian banking industry has undergone a paradigm shift after the commencement of liberalization in 1991. The impact of deregulation, technological improvements, and accessibility of banks to capital market for raising funds led to a revolutionary transition in corporate financing policies. Such changing circumstances have created a need for investigating the capital structure of Indian commercial banks. This book focuses on the liability structure of Indian commercial banks and presents the empirical work undertaken by the author during her doctoral study. The book is a blend of comprehensive coverage and detailed analysis, which would help students and researchers acquire factual and analytical knowledge on the key factors influencing liability structure across banks. This book is intended for students pursuing postgraduate studies in management, banking and finance, economics and commerce. The book would also be useful to the researchers, academicians and banking professionals, who are inclined towards having a better understanding of the variations in the influence of various factors across the different liability categories of banks.

It includes some very respectable writers like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Roberto Bolao and Eduardo Galeano for example, but also lesser known ones in India like Daniel Castro, Carlos Montemayor or Cristina Peri Rossi among many others. This would be the first book of its kind to be published from India and purports to introduce the texts of the above mentioned writers to Indians who can now easily buy books in English translation on-line. Many of the problems raised in this book continue to be very third-worldly and very comparable to some Indian situations. Japanese Language Education :

A Bridge between Language and Culture
Editors M.V. Lakshmi, Hideo Hosokawa and P.A. George

Language Education in India, over the past few years has evolved with new curricula to serve a varied range of learners at various levels be it in the academia, the business world, in school curriculum or as a hobby class. With global being the catch word in all fields, effective communication necessitates not just proficiency in the language concerned, but also in the culture of the land to be able to reach out to its people. This volume addresses various issues of relevance that pertain to Language Education and focuses on the indispensable role of Culture in Language Education from a variety of perspectives of teaching, and learning. Case studies to ascertain the role of Culture incorporated into the Language classroom have been taken up for Japanese and Korean Languages while addressing issues that would be applicable to many other languages as well. It is felt that this book would be a good resource material for teachers, researchers, students, educationists, and help to open new vistas of research in fields of Japanese Language Education and Language education at large.

It is a compendium of a good many invaluable articles and speeches written or delivered in response to different situations and consequently published in different forms in different journals, magazines and periodicals. Acknowledgements in due forms refer to all of them, as far as possible. The dominant purpose behind presenting the book containing the articles in a compact volume is to induce the young as well as the senior learned readers to go deep into the contents of the articles and to feel inspired and thrilled to raise their voice against the social evils bedeviling the society of ours. It is also aimed at highlighting the dereliction of duty on the part of the leaders who have been steering the society and the polity. This drives the author to entitle the book as Noblesse Oblige. In other words, those who are in authority and privilege have some obligation and responsibility towards those who are far down it. Privilege, in short, entails responsibility. The author fervently hopes that the book will serve the contemplated purpose and the society will be reformed and reborn, de novo, to address the grievances of the masses or the hoi polloi.

24 Northerns Catalouge Readers, young and old, are sure to have much food for their varied thoughts. They are most likely to feel thrilled and enthused to probe deep into them and find new intellectual pastures for further consideration and research. They may feel prompted to raise their voice and wield their pen against the social evils highlighted by the divergent articles incorporated in the book. They may come to see the portrayal of reasons, in the diverse articles, tormenting the growth and development of India as a nation. It throws light on the shirking of responsibility by the people at the helm of affairs in polity and society. The leitmotif of the whole compendium is throbbing with the maxim: Privilege entails responsibility. Readers may come across the chameleonic politics and politicians as have been brought to the fore by the penetrating yet facile analysis of articles informing the book. Analysis of the quirky situations leads to suggesting the plausible solutions as well. A vivid contrast between the Pre-Independence and the Post-Independence Indian politicians is sought to be brought out to stir up the present-day politicians to emulate the former in the interest of evolving a sound democracy immune from exploitation and corruption in the India of today. activities for decades, the discipline began to decline due to reasons such as the lack of interest in traditional subjects that come under the nomenclature of Japanese Studies, the overwhelming interest shown by students and researchers in the field of Chinese Studies following the rise of China as an economic super power, inadequate state support and funding, and so on. On the contrary, the Asian countries have seen a rise in the demand for Japanese Studies. This volume gives a proper perspective of the state of Japanese Studies and Japanese language education in Asian and European countries, Japans international relations, its soft culture and its influence on foreign countries, its literature and culture, and many other aspects of Japan as a nation. The publication will be a good reference work for Japanologists, scholars, students and researchers.

This is my poetic debut breaking away from a continuum of writing research-based books, articles and papers in response to my career-oriented imperatives and aspirations. Now that I am detached from a teaching institution like a college or university where I spent 35-odd years in my capacity as a teacher and a researcher in a social science, I am now free to delve deep in my areas of literary interests which were integral to my nature from my early student days but under certain compulsions I couldnt pursue it. Now I seem to have come full circle. This book of poetry may inaugurate the launch of a new literary drive to be followed by other literary genres including fictions and novels in pursuit of my long-bridled literary passion. The present book of poetry is comprised of a total of twenty-five poems of different tastes and lengths some contained in a single page while others expand over pages up to seven to eight. The included poems have been dichoto-mized into two segments Romantic and Realistic. Romantic poems are love-centric conceived and composed in the prime of my life while the Realistic poems are reality-centric composed in the later part of my life engrossed in combating the harsh realities. Love, admittedly, informs and inspires all the poems whether in the first part or in the second but the nature of love in the first part is different from that of the second. Love in the first part may be characterized as quixotic. The term love is generic. It is the core of all creative actions. One cant do anything positive without love for it. One must love a thing to do it admirably. This love has propelled me to conceive and compose this book of poetry. Hence the title Love Ever Gives.

This book, probably for the first time, considers how Dr Ambedkars historic conversion to Buddhism in 1956, in Nagpur, with lacs of his followers, was a step towards carrying out a socio-cultural and democratic revolution in India. Dr Ambedkar held that a religious or cultural revolution always precedes a political revolution. According to the author, Indias resolution to establish a new social order based on the principles of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity and Justice as enshrined in her constitution, is a peaceful democratic revolution. Viewed in this context, the author argues that, by bringing back Buddhism to its place of origin, Dr Ambedkar sought to provide the cultural foundation to Indias postIndepenendence socio political revolution.

The first Hindu Mission to AMERICA

Sunit Mullick

This book positions Brahmo Samaj leader Protap Chunder Mozoomdar as the originator of the Hindu mission movement to the United States of America in the late 19th century. It is known that Protap Mozoomdar, together with Swami Vivekananda, represented Hinduism at the Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893. But what has missed the focus of scholars is that Mozoomdar visited the United States ten years earlier in 1883, making him the pioneer of the Hindu mission movement to the United States. The book is the first detailed study of Protap Chunder Mozoomdar in America. It is written through primary research on American newspapers, periodicals, manuscripts, diaries and archival material available in American libraries, and material in possession of the author. On the whole, the book presents new information of interest to both the general reader and the scholarly community.
