Multiservice Switch 15000

The Multiservice Switch 15000 houses the following modules on the front panel:

Breaker Interface Panel (BIP)

Control Processor (CP) modules: CP3 or CP4
16p OC-3/STM-1 (16-port OC-3/STM-1)
6mPktServ FP (PS FP) or Dual Core Packet Server (DCPS) modules
4pGe modules: 4 port Gigabit Ethernet for hybrid and and Iu interfaces over IP

Filler modules (dedicated to the Multiservice Switch 15000)

The Multiservice Switch 15000 houses the following modules on the rear panel:

MAC address module

Alarm BITS

PIM (Power Interface Module)

Fabric module

Power supply and alarm systems

The Breaker Interface Panel (BIP) houses the Breaker Interface Modules (BIM) and the
Alarm/Test module. The BIP provides low pass filtering to reduce conducted emission
and distributes the main battery feeds across four Breaker Interface Modules (BIM).
Each pair of BIMs contains five breakers that power the Multiservice Switch 15000 and
the corresponding cooling unit.
For each node, one BIM is operational and the second one provides redundancy in case of
breaker failure.
Each breaker contains LEDs that indicate their operational status. The following table
indicates the meaning of the Breaker LEDs:

Alarm/Test Module

The Alarm/Test module in the BIP contains the LEDs that indicate the general health of
the frame and maintenance buttons. These are described in the following table:

is generated.

LEDs for minor, major and critical alarms

The fault severity is indicated by the minor,

major, or critical LEDs.

This (left) button causes all the LEDs to light

up for ten seconds.

alarm cut-off button (acknowledge)

This (right) button deactivates the signals

emitted from the shelf to the alarm connectors.
This button does not affect the LEDs that are
lit.

Cooling system

The cooling system is mounted in the center of the frame. For the Multiservice Switch
15000, the cooling system is arranged in a push-pull configuration. Cool air is drawn
through the bottom shelf and expelled out the back of the frame (the cooling unit acts as a
baffle to deflect air horizontally out the back of the frame). The lower cooling unit fans
expel air while upper cooling fans draw air in.
Each cooling unit of the Multiservice Switch 15000 is made up of three field replaceable
fans with a controller. If the temperature reaches an upper threshold level, the fan speed
increases. If one fan fails, an alarm is generated.
For more information, see the Cooling unit LEDs (p. 7-3)

Preventive maintenance
Perform preventive maintenance to keep the system running normally. Regular preventive
maintenance prolongs the life of the equipment and maximizes operation performance.
In addition to describing preventive maintenance procedures, this section contains
information on software maintenance tasks. This includes a warning that you must not
conduct more than one major software maintenance activity at a time.
Although these are not always preventive in nature, they represent some of the day-to-day
activities of maintaining the system.
This section covers:

Preventive maintenance tasks (p. 4-2)

CP switchover

This section discusses the implications of a CP switchover.

WARNING
CP switchover
Service outage occurs if only one OMU is in service during automatic or manual CP
switchover.
A CP switchover can take place automatically as the result of a CP fault, or can be
triggered manually by the operator. Service outage will occur if only one OMU is in
service during CP switchover.
When two OMUs are present, the OMU will switch activity to the standby OMU in the
event of a CP switchover. In this case, there is no service outage.
Refer to "Control processors" in Nortel Networks Multiservice Switch 15000/20000 Hardware Installation, Maintenance and Upgrades, NN-10600-130 for more details.

Corrective maintenance

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Corrective maintenance
Network maintenance is based on graphical network supervision using the Operation,
Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) Graphical User Interface (GUI).
It is also based on the identification and replacement of faulty items of equipment.
This process is divided into the three following steps:

Identifying the faulty items of equipment

Locating the faulty items of equipment

Replacing the faulty items of equipment

This document describes only the locating and replacing the faulty equipment steps.
Corrective maintenance tasks

For more information on the corrective maintenance tasks for the 9370 RNC, see
Hardware replacement in the 9370 Radio Network Controller (p. 4-8)
Intervention restrictions

There can be a lapse of time between the identification of the alarm at the OAM and the
time the operator responsible for the intervention arrives at the site.
The operator must be synchronized with the OAM network controller (by telephone)
before on-site intervention in the following cases:

An isolation procedure
Intervention because alarms are displayed on the OAM graphical interface
Completion of an on-site intervention
Return-to-service procedure.

Product reference

Each piece of equipment has a Product Engineering Code (PEC). The PEC code of a
product is written on its label. This code is used to order a spare part.
Most of the PEC suffixes, for example, NTRU04xx are not included in the following
tables.

Alcatel-Lucent 9353 Wireless Management System - User Guide, NN-20500-032.
After an 9370 RNC restore, a MIB Audit is required to check for any differences in the
Management Information Base (MIB) files when compared with the OAM database.
If there are differences present, synchronize the MIB files.
This task is performed from the Network Services Platform (NSP) Graphic User
Interface (GUI).
Note: If a faulty Data Recovery Field (DRF) application triggered an RNC outage, do
not synchronize the MIB files with the OAM database.
Contact technical support for assistance.
Prerequisites

NOTICE
Risk of service loss
Depending on the level of differences between the MIB files and the OAM database, the
MIB files may have to be rebuilt. MIB rebuild can only be performed in a maintenance
window, as this has an impact on the 9370 RNC service. Be sure to schedule this activity
in accordance with maintenance planning.

Module replacement
6

Overview
Purpose

This section introduces some of the common tasks that could be necessary to maintain the
Alcatel-Lucent 9370 RNC. Module replacement includes various tasks.
In all communication networks, emphasis is placed on continuity. This is usually taken
care of by dimensioning to handle larger loads and duplication of essential hardware.
An alarm is generated when a fault occurs. The module must be identified and its
geographical position identified. Depending on the nature of the alarm, intervention can
be organized immediately or programmed into a scheduled site visit.
Before any physical intervention, verify that a recent backup exists. If the backup does
not exist, create a backup. For more information, see To create a backup (p. 5-2).

Module replacement

To replace a PS module

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

To replace a PS module
If a Packet Server (PS) or Dual Core Packet Server (DCPS) fails, the overall maximum
capacity for handling traffic decreases. The traffic is redistributed among the other
modules if required. An alarm is generated at WMS which indicates the name and type of
card required. The urgency for replacing a DCPS module depends on the traffic
requirements.
If the PS module is replaced, its presence is recognized and the traffic is redistributed and
normal service is resumed.
Note: These procedures concern modules that are no longer operational. No traffic is
handled by the module.
Prerequisites

You must:

identify the module and its geographical situation

have the correct replacement part
follow all the usual precautions for working on site with electronic equipment.
Note: For a complete description of the LEDs and their meaning , see Chapter 7,
Module LEDs.

Procedure
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Identify the failed card in the RNC shelf and verify the reference with the replacement
part.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Disengage both upper and lower clips of the module.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Disengage the module by using the upper and lower clips handles together for leverage.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Extract the module by sliding it towards the front being careful to support its weight
(modules can weigh approximately 5 kg).
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

To replace a DCPS module

Since the mixing of PS and DCPS modules is not allowed, no parts confusion is
permitted. A PS placed in a DCPS configuration will be recognized as incorrect.
When an RNC has been upgraded to handle DCPS modules a small delay is anticipated.
The configuration attributes are modified and a process of recognition and conformity
occurs. When the card is verified, all processes continue and the traffic is redistributed
and normal service is resumed.
Prerequisites

You must:

identify the module and its geographical situation

have the correct replacement part
follow all the usual precautions for working on site with electronic equipment.
Note: For a complete description of the LEDs and their meaning , see Chapter 7,
Module LEDs.

Procedure
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Identify the failed card in the RNC shelf and verify the reference with the replacement
part.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Unclip both upper and lower clips of the module.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Disengage the module by using the upper and lower clips handles together for leverage.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Extract the module by sliding it towards the front being careful to support its weight
(modules can weigh approximately 5 kg).
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Prepare the new module by unclipping the module handles and introduce the replacement
module in the guides.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Slide the module until the clip handles are used to engage the module in the shelf.

Overview

The equipment described in this document generates, uses, and can radiate radio
frequency energy. If the equipment is not installed and used in accordance with the
instruction manual, the equipment can cause harmful interference to radio
communications.
There is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. To
determine whether this equipment is causing interference, the operator can turn the
equipment off and on. The operator is encouraged to correct any interference problems.
The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements have been selected to ensure an
adequate level of compatibility for apparatus in residential, commercial, and light
industrial environments.
Compatibility levels, however, do not cover extreme cases that can occur anywhere, but
that have a low probability of occurrence. In particular, they may not cover cases where a
source of interference that is producing repeated transient or continuous phenomena is
permanently present. This could include a radar or broadcast site in the vicinity. In such
cases, the operator can limit the source of interference and/or apply special protection to
the impacted equipment.
For the integrity of the product, the operator must wear the antistatic wrist strap at all
times while working with Alcatel-Lucent systems.
