. 8 (Combined stresses) Problem 1: Three loads are applied to the short rectangular post shown in Fig. 1(a). The cross-sectional dimensions of the post are shown in Fig. 1(b). Determine: (a) The normal and shear stresses and points H and K; (b) The principal stresses and maximum in-plane shear stress at point H, and show the orientation of theses stresses in an appropriate sketch.

(b) Principal stresses and maximum in-plane shear stress at H:

H 1,2

y 0 + 37.4 0 37.4 2 2 = x + xy = + 5.08 2 2 2 2 = 18.7 19.4 MPa

x + y

Therefore, 1 = 38.1 MPa and 2 = -0.7 MPa tan 2 p = 2 xy = 2 5.08 = 0.27166 ( 0 37.4 )

p = 7.6 (counterclockwise from the x-axis)

By substituting this value into the transformation equation: + y x y x' = x + cos 2 + xy sin 2 2 2 0 + 37.4 0 37.4 cos15.2 + ( 5.08 ) sin15.2 = + 2 2 = 0.7 MPa Therefore, 1 = 38.1 MPa is acting at 7.6+90=97.6 (CCW) and 2 = -0.7 MPa is acting at 7.6 (CCW)

Problem 2: The state of stress at a point is shown in Fig. 2. By using Mohrs circle, determine:
a) The principal orientation; stresses and their

b) The maximum in-plane shear stress and average normal stress, specifying the corresponding orientation; and, c) The equivalent state of stress if the coordinate system is oriented 30 clockwise from the element shown in Fig. 2. From Fig. 2:

Fig. 2

x = 300 MPa, y = -100 MPa, xy = -150 MPa

Therefore,

a) 1 = 100 + 250 = 350 MPa acting at -36.87/2 = -18.43

2 = -250 + 100 = -150 MPa acting at -18.43+90=71.57

1 = 350 MPa 2 = 150 MPa

b) max = R = 250 MPa acting at (90-36.87)/2 = 26.57

avg = C = 100 MPa

max = 250 MPa

avg = 100 MPa

c)
